I believe The Great Gatsby is a legendary novel by an American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940). This
novel, which is set in New York in the 1920s era, tells Jay Gatsby, a millionaire who also was his neighbour,
Nick Carraway, a newcomer to New York who is starting his career as a stockbroker. Nick lives right next
door to Jay Gatsby's house and routinely does parties in his luxurious house. Even though Gatsby often
invites his high-class neighbours to attend his parties, who exactly Gatsby is remains a mystery to many
people so that there is a lot of gossip that Gatsby is a liquor smoker, has killed people, and so on. At that
time, he had a relationship with Daisy (Nick Carraway's cousin) who came from the upper class,
unfortunately, when Gatsby went to war, Daisy married Tom Buchanan, a rich man from Chicago. Even
though Daisy is married, Gatsby still loves her. Soon, Gatsby's success in buying a luxury house in West Egg,
Long Island, New York, he chooses the house because Daisy also lives in another part of Long Island which
is only separated by the sea from her house. In order to meet Daisy, Gatsby purposely holds parties for the
upper class with the hope that Daisy will come to the party, unfortunately, Daisy has never been to any of
the parties. Even though her household was overshadowed by her husband's infidelity, Daisy still chose to
stay with Tom, her husband.

After reading this part of the story, I think The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a widely considered
masterpiece of American literature. Set in Island, 1922, The Great Gatsby portrays a time in which massive

war-born wealth and cheap liquor give birth to the great American party period, where booze and bobbed

hair reign supreme in newly rich New York. This sets the scene for the tragic love story between Daisy

Buchanan and war hero, Jame Gatz (Gatsby). The Great Gatsby is an interesting novel due to the ideas

it presents that our society can still relate to today. Media manipulation, money before love and fame

because of nothing more than wealth, are all ideas presented in the novel and they are all ideas that our

society is notorious for today.

Post-discussion reflection entry

In the space below, please describe how your understanding of the text was enriched by your
group discussion.

I agree that this novel shows us about self-reliance where we know that there are several points at

the beginning of the story where Nick comes into the East Egg and learns the bond business. His

father advised him, “Whenever you feel like criticizing any one, “he told me. “Just remember that all

the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had”. Based on this, before Nick left

the Midwest his father advised him. His family has been prominent, well to do people in the Middle

Western city for three generations. They have a tradition that we’re descended from the Dukes of

Buccleuch, but the actual founder of his line was his grandfather’s brother, who came here in fifty-

one, sent a substitute to the Civil War, and started the wholesale hardware business that his father

carries on to-day.
