M1SEATWORK 2
(TOPIC: EGOISM AND HEDONISM)

Evaluation of the case:

1. According to the specified article, it is my belief that due to the residents' failure
to speak out against injustice, they are often described as bystanders. For the
bystander effect to be a real factor, there are several essential factors involved.
The first thing we see is that the presence of different humans creates a
diffusion of duty. Since there are so many observers in such a particular area,
and it is no longer necessary for people Experiencing a great deal of stress to
intervene against the injustice happening around, as they presume someone else
will act. Therefore, this idea of a duty to behave transcends every one of them. As
for the second purpose, it is to act in an inaccurate and socially acceptable
manner. The inability of multiple observers to react is often interpreted as a sign
that a reaction is not always wished or no longer needed. It is also possible that
the residents thought staying quiet was the right thing to do because everyone
around them was being ignorant, and it was not appropriate for them to speak
out.

Regarding those 38 residents, there is no way for them to speak out against this
crime because of the legal facilities making it challenging for them. However,
there is such a thing as the right to remain silent, which guarantees anyone the
right not to answer questions from law enforcement officials or even in court.
Although, the right has been recognized by law. Apart from those legal rights,
when we discuss the obligations that come with moral and social responsibility,
some residents may claim that they do not believe that 'free will' exists when it is
the individual's choice to do things according to his or her own will. Therefore, in
moral terms, such residents may ignore their responsibilities for the sake of free
will.

As an individual, I would like to express my opinion that the 38 residents

remaining to be quiet and ignorant are wrong and they should have stepped up in
action, and perhaps this would have saved Kitty Genovese's life.
2. It is my opinion that true happiness can only be achieved through pain. Essentially,
people are always looking for ways to be happy, and this should be one of their goals in
their lifetime. In life, it is more than likely that you will never find happiness by seeking it
as your only goal. for instance, A lot of your favorite foods will certainly make you happy
if you eat them frequently. A person who eats a favorite food for a reason other than
enjoyment, such as passing a hard-earned test and treating themselves as a reward
when they pass, is more likely to be content while eating the dish. It is because you know
you have put in a lot of effort and hardship to pass that test. In that case, you will feel
happier after completing the task.

In such cases, people who face pain and suffering need a reason to be happy, and an
undisturbed life probably will not provide that reason unless they are unhappy. and It is
impossible for one to learn from his mistakes if there is no suffering, and if there is no
pain, one will never feel suffering. For example, when individuals grow up in an
environment where almost everything consistently happens their way and there are no
difficulties or problems, they would be living in such an ideal society, it is not the same
as enjoyment. In our lives, we learn from our mistakes and how we overcome them, as
they are the greatest teachers. There is a close connection between pain and suffering,
and we all know that being in pain is not pleasant to endure. Hence, people hold on to
the idea that they must first shed their suffering before they can truly be happy.
Consequently, one cannot be truly happy without pain, since living a life without pain and
focusing only on happiness is not living life to its fullest.
