Introduction:

A motherboard (also called main board, main circuit board, system board, baseboard, planar board,
logic board, [1] or mob) is the main printed circuit board (PCB) in general-purpose computers and other
expandable systems. It holds and allows communication between many of the crucial electronic
components of a system, such as the central processing unit (CPU) and memory, and provides
connectors for other peripherals. Unlike a backplane, a motherboard usually contains significant sub-
systems, such as the central processor, the chipset's input/output and memory controllers, interface
connectors, and other components integrated for general use.

Motherboard means specifically a PCB with expansion capabilities. As the name suggests, this board is
often referred to as the "mother" of all components attached to it, which often include peripherals,
interface cards, and daughter cards: sound cards, video cards, network cards, host bus adapters, TV
tuner cards, IEEE 1394 cards; and a variety of other custom components.

Similarly, the term main board describes a device with a single board and no additional expansions or
capability, such as controlling boards in laser printers, television sets, washing machines, mobile phones,
and other embedded systems with limited expansion abilities

The motherboard is one of the most important parts of the PC, but as a tech enthusiast, you probably
already know that. What you might not know, though, is the role played by each chip, port or slot
present on a motherboard. A lot of people simply don’t care about these aspects, but if you’re the do-it-
yourself type, knowing everything there is to know when it comes to motherboards can help you when
it comes to troubleshooting, upgrading or even building your own PC, despite the latter

Motherboard Basics

A computer has many components, each with their own roles and functions. The role of the
motherboard is to allow all these components to communicate with each other. Considering the fact
that all the other components are installed on the motherboard or connected to it, it is safe to say that
the motherboard is the central piece of a PC, the component that brings it all together.
Processor Socket

The processor socket is the central piece of a motherboard, usually being located near the center of the
motherboard. It’s also the central piece because it holds the processor – the brain of your computer.

what-does-a-motherboard-do-titleA Motherboard is the spine of your PC; it is the link between all the
different components inside your computer. One of the major functions of a motherboard is to act as
the “hub” to which other computer devices connect. A board can come in many formations to fit
different needs, budgets and speeds.

The Motherboard itself is a printed circuit board that allows the CPU, RAM, and all other computer
hardware components to communicate with each other.

There are huge variations in Motherboards from design, cases, power supply, size (Form Factor) and
compatibility.

A motherboard from one manufacturer will support a single type of CPU and a few different types of
memory. Other peripherals like video cards, hard drives and other components may not be compatible.

This means the choice of your motherboard can regulate your options when selecting components. It
can control things such as what type of processor you can use, how much RAM memory it can have and
what features it can support. This is why it is important to have a rough idea of what you need when
selecting the right motherboard.

Websites like Computer Hope can offer advice on how to identify what the design of your motherboard
is and components it will support.

(1) Industrial motherboards

Motherboards are the foundation of all computers. They are printed-circuit boards (housing the
computer’s basic circuitry and vital components), into which other boards, or cards, are plugged. They
manage all data transactions between the CPU (central processing unit) and the peripheral devices.
Their main components are memory, CPU, microprocessor and coprocessors, BIOS, interconnecting
circuitry, controllers, mass storage, parallel and serial ports, and expansion slots. Other component
devices and peripherals can be added through expansion slots, including the monitor screen, the
keyboard, disk drives, etc.

There are two important differences between industrial and standard motherboards. Firstly, industrial
motherboards need to be more rugged than standard models. Since they are used in tougher conditions
than standard computer motherboards, industrial motherboards, like industrial LCD displays or
industrial LCD touch screens, need to be able to cope with higher temperatures and need to be tougher
in case of a shock or a hit. Secondly they need to be able to easily handle the massive amounts of
information which are essential to industrial operations and controls. They are used also for many
critical functions and applications, such as industrial control, the military, aerospace industries, and the
medical field.

The interface between computer motherboards and smaller boards or cards in the expansion slots is
called the bus. Industrial motherboards communicate with and control peripheral devices via buses or
other communication standards.

Motherboard is a common pathway over which information is transmitted between the hardware
devices (the central processing unit, memory, and each of the peripheral control units) in a
microcomputer.

In a personal computer, the motherboard contains the bus, the microprocessor, and integrated

circuits used for controlling any built-in peripherals such as the keyboard, text and graphics display,
serial ports and parallel ports, joystick, and mouse interfaces. A motherboard also has PCI-Express slots
for a high-end graphics card or other peripherals. Laptop motherboards have peripheral expansion via
external ports

Intel has announced the discontinuation of its 300 series chipset motherboards, including the H310,
H370, Z370, and Z390. Production will end this July, while sales of the mobos, including mobile chipsets
such as the QM370, will halt in January 2022.

Intel isn’t slow to pull the curtain down on its products when replacements are waiting in the wings. Last
month, the company discontinued its entire 9th-gen Coffee Lake Refresh line, including the still-excellent
Core i9-9900K. Its predecessor, the 8th-gen Coffee Lake CPUs, was discontinued in June 2020.

The announcement comes just before the start of CES 2021 next week, where Intel will likely reveal its
500-series motherboards. These feature an LGA1200 socket, so both the 10th-gen Comet Lake-S and
upcoming 11th-gen Rocket Lake-S chips are supported. With the 500-series motherboards, Intel will
finally be catching up with rival AMD by offering support for the PCIe 4.0 interface. Team blue needs to
close the tech gap on its rival; according to benchmarking giant Pass Mark Software, AMD has just
surpassed Intel when it comes to global desktop CPU market share for the first time in fifteen years.

It appears that LGA1200 is set to last for just two generations. The larger, 12th-gen Alder Lake-S chips,
which use the 10nm big/small architecture, will use a new CPU socket called LGA1700, forcing users to
upgrade their hardware—again.
