INTRODUCTION

The National Gallery of Modern Art

(NGMA) in Bangalore is a premier art
institution in India the third and the
youngest following the NGMA in Delhi
and Mumbai.

The NGMA Bangalore is a heritage

building preserved withal its grandeur.

HISTORY
The heritage mansion which is 100 year old
was owned by Manickavelu Mudaliar a
successful business man from Tamilnadu.

Due to financial problems the house was put

on auction and was acquired by the City
Improvement Trust (BDA) which was later
transferred to Housing Board in 1960.

This was subleased to Ministry of Culture in

2000 which was later the south center of
NGMA.

 GASOMETER CITY- VIENNA

VIENNESE AUTHORITIES DECIDED TO INVEST IN LARGE-SCALE GAS AND ELECTRIC UTILITIES, SO THEY
CONSTRUCTED WHAT BECAME EUROPE’S LARGEST GAS PLANT.

THE GASOMETERS WERE BUILT BETWEEN 1896 AND 1899 IN THE SIMMERING DISTRICT OF VIENNA.

THE CONTAINERS WERE USED TO HELP SUPPLY VIENNA WITH TOWN GAS.

IN 1978, THEY WERE DESIGNATED AS PROTECTED HISTORIC LANDMARKS.

THE GASOMETERS WERE RETIRED IN 1984 DUE TO NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN GASOMETER CONSTRUCTION,
AS WELL AS THE CITY’S CONVERSION FROM TOWN GAS AND COAL GAS TO NATURAL GAS.

THESE INCREDIBLE STRUCTURES WERE CAST OFF, BUT A RECENT REVITALIZATION PROJECT LED BY JEAN
NOUVEL, COOP HIMMELB(L)AU, MANFRED WEHDORN, AND WILHELM HOLZBAUER HAVE TRANSFORMED
THESE FOUR TANKS INTO SPECTACULAR AND THRIVING COMMUNITIES.

 THE GASOMETERS WERE BUILT
GASOMETER CITY- VIENNA BETWEEN 1896 AND 1899 IN THE
SIMMERING DISTRICT OF VIENNA
NEAR THE GASWERK SIMMERING
GAS WORKS OF THE DISTRICT. THE
CONTAINERS WERE USED TO HELP
SUPPLY VIENNA WITH TOWN GAS.
AT THE TIME, THE DESIGN WAS THE
LARGEST IN ALL OF EUROPE. THE
GASOMETERS WERE RETIRED IN

 THE GASOMETERS ARE FOUR
GIGANTIC GAS TANKS
ENCLOSED BY A BRICK
FAÇADE, EACH
APPROXIMATELY 230 FEET
TALL, 197 FEET IN DIAMETER,
AND WITH A STORAGE
CAPACITY OF OVER 3 MILLION
CUBIC FEET.

THE STRUCTURES WERE THEN

RENOVATED INTO 615 NEW
APARTMENTS, A STUDENT
DORMITORY, OFFICES, A DAY
CARE CENTER, A MULTIPLEX,
OVER 70 SHOPS,
RESTAURANTS, BARS AND
CAFES AN EVENTS HALL, AND
THE VIENNA NATIONAL
ARCHIVE!

Concept
Overall the project has been conceived as a sort of self-sufficient microcosm.
,

With the combination of the offices and residences it is intended to generate new ways of living and working in
a single area.

The project emphasizes the skill with which it have resolved the restoration of the old deposits and the surprise
of creating the new building in sharply innovative ways. The group is a prodigious merger between past and
future.

The creation of new housing, commercial areas of recreation and culture, and regeneration of the industrial
district turned the gasometer into the alternative urban center of vienna.

This project is distinguished by the presence of an indoor garden and ecocompatibility of a stepped structure.

To illuminate the interior spaces, a courtyard was designed that provides natural light; the apartments of the
new construction receive light from balconies with oriented northward. 360 houses are divided into different
forms, from small houses with terraces to studios.

Structure
Retired steel tanks were only steel girders and overlapping beams were all that was inside the ancient steel
cylinders.

Concrete rings were added to consolidate the old work of the factory and to establish a connection between the
reinforcement pillars of the Gasometer and the new building.

The structure of the new block is made up of a system of concrete pillars which reach full height. Aluminum and
glass curtain walls close off the houses, which, thanks to their limited width, enjoy abundant natural light.

Retaining the existing brick facade in the exterior glass, mirrors refractile, bricks and metal highlights were the
other materials used in the interior throughout the building.
