MONEY AT WORK
Go to a big city anywhere in the world. In it you will find people who own businesses, people who work
in businesses, and people who buy products and services from businesses. One thing keeps the products and
services flowing from producers to buyers: money. Workers use the money they earn to buy things they need and
want. Companies use that money to make more things that people need and want.
People who start companies also have to convince other people to invest in them. To get people to invest,
companies offer them a chance to make money. They can do this in a number of ways. Some companies sell
stock. The people who buy stock own a piece of the company. If the company makes a profit, so will the
stockholders. If the company does not do well, stockholders may lose their money.
Businesses can also sell bonds. People who buy bonds lend their money to the company. To make it
worthwhile for lenders, companies pay interest on the money. Businesses also get loans from banks. They pay
interest to the bank. The bank uses the money in people's bank account to make loans. It pays them interest in

THE CHINESE HOROSCOPE AND YOUR PERSONALITY
What kind of person are you? Are you friendly or shy? Maybe you're romantic. You might be artistic.
Where does your personality come from? Many people believe that your time of birth influences your
personality. The Chinese horoscope is one tradition that connects your personality with the year of your birth.
According to the Chinese horoscope, each year is represented by a different animal. There are twelve
animals in the horoscope, and they repeat every twelve years. For example, the year 2000 was the year of the
dragon, and the year 2012 will be the year of the dragon again. In order after the dragon, the next animals on the
calendar are the snake, the horse, the sheep, the monkey, the rooster, the dog, the pig, the rat, the ox, the tiger,
and the rabbit.
These horoscope animals influence the personality of someone born in that year. Were you born in 1983?
That was the year of the pig. You are honest and affectionate. Were you born in 1982, the year of the dog? Then
you are hardworking, but also a little pessimistic. If you were born in 1984, the year of the rat, you are charming
and generous. If you were born in 1985, the year of the ox, you are calm, sincere, and stubborn. 1986 was the
year of the tiger. Tigers have a good attitude toward life and are loyal to their friends.

A special day for the celebration of mothers can be traced to the times of ancient Greece when tribute was
paid to Rhea, the mother of many of the Greek gods.
Early Christians also paid tribute to Mary, the mother of God, during Lent. This tribute evolved into
“Mothering Sunday” in England. “Mothering Sunday” is a celebration of all mothers and is observed on the
fourth Sunday of Lent.
In 1872, in America, Julia Ward Howe, the author of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”, suggested the
idea of Mother's Day. However, Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia is credited with creating Mother's Day in 1905.
Anna Jarvis campaigned for Mother's Day as a tribute to her mother, who had tried to establish Mother's
Friendship Day to help heal the scars of the Civil War in America.
In 1910, West Virginia became the first state to adopt a formal holiday to recognize mothers. A year later,
nearly every state officially marked the day of celebration. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed
Mother's Day as a national holiday, to be held on the second Sunday of May.

answer to each of the questions from 36 to 40.
By adopting a few simple techniques, parents who read to their children can substantially increase their
children’s language development. It is surprising, but true. How parents talk to their children makes a big
difference in the children's language development. If a parent encourages the child to actively respond to what
the parent is reading, the child's language skills increase.
A study was done with two or three-year-old children and their parents. Half of the thirty children
participants were in the experimental study; the other half acted as the control group. In the experimental group,
the parents were given a two-hour training session in which they were taught to ask open ended questions rather
than yes/ no questions. For example, the parent should ask, “What is the doggie doing?” rather than, “Is the
doggie running away?” Experimental parents were also instructed in how to expand on their children's answer;
how to suggest alternative possibilities, and how to praise correct answers.
At the beginning of the study, the children did not differ on measures of language development, but at the
end of one month, the children in the experimental group tested 5.5 months ahead of the control group on a test
of verbal expression and vocabulary. Nine months later, the children in the experimental group still showed an
advance of 6 months over the children in the control group.

Ever since humans have inhabited the earth, they have made use of various forms of communication.
Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral speech. When there is a language
barrier, communication is accomplished through sign language in which motions stand for letters, words, and
ideas. Tourists, the deaf, and the mute have had to resort to this form of expression. Many of these symbols of
whole words are very picturesque and exact and can be used internationally; spelling, however, cannot. Body
language transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or unintentionally. A wink can be a
way of flirting or indicating that the party is only joking. A nod signifies approval, while shaking the head
indicates a negative reaction.

History books record that the first film with sound was made in 1927. But sound films, or “talkies”, did
not suddenly appear after years of silent screenings. From the earliest public performances in 1896, films were
accompanied by music and sound effects. These were produced by a single pianist, a small band, or a full-scale
orchestra; larger movie theatres could buy sound-effect machines. Research into sound that was reproduced at
exactly the same time as the pictures - called “synchronized sound" - began soon after the very first films were
shown. With synchronized sounds, characters on the movie screen could sing and speak. As early as 1896, the
newly invented gramophone, which played a large disc carrying music and dialogue, was used as a sound system.
The biggest disadvantage was that the sound and pictures could become unsynchronized if, for example, the
gramophone needle jumped or if the speed of the projector changed. This system was only effective for a single
song or dialogue sequence.
In the “sound-on-film” system, sounds were recorded as a series of marks on celluloid which could be
read by an optical sensor. These signals would be placed on the film alongside the image, guaranteeing
synchronization. Short feature films were produced in this way as early as 1922. This system eventually brought
us “talking pictures.”

Charles Robert Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, England, on February 12, 1809. He came from a wealthy family
and never had to work. He studied medicine and theology. In 1831, he had the chance to go on a scientific
expedition. He sailed as a volunteer scientist aboard the HMS Beagle.
Everywhere the Beagle stopped. Darwin made observations of plants and animals. In the Galápagos Islands.
Darwin noted that each island had its own form of tortoise, mockingbird, and finch. Each species on each island
was slightly different. Darwin wondered if there were links between the similar species.
For the next 20 years. Darwin thought about what his observations might mean. He decided that the young of any
species must compete for food in order to survive. Those with traits best suited to survival would grow up and
reproduce offspring with those traits. Eventually, a new species would evolve. Darwin also thought that all
species were descended from common ancestors. In 1859, he wrote a book called On the Origin of Species.
Many scientists did not believe his theory until modern genetics - the study of inherited traits - began in the early
1900s. Most attacks on Darwin’s ideas came from religious opponents. They thought that evolution denied the
divine creation of human beings and made people and animals equal.
Darwin spent the rest of his life writing about his theory. He died on April 19, 1882.
