1ST DISTANATION – MT. MATUTUM AND PINEAPPLE FIELDS

Tour guide - So welcome to our first destination which is Mt. Matutum and Pineapple
Fields. Mt. Matutum is a steep, non active volcano, which is located North of the town of
General Santos City, Province of South Cotabato. The name Matutum is derived from
blaa’n term “amyak maleh“which means climb and plant. The forested slopes of this
majestic mountain are covered with huge ferns, trees and plants.
Tourist – Can I ask a question?

Tour guide – Sure ma’am, go ahead.

Tourist – When was the last eruption?

Tour guide – Good question. The last eruption was recorded in 1911 at a 2,286 meters
rising high above sea level. Did you know?, Mt. Matutum is nominated as a new
UNESCO word heritage site. The Mt. Matutum’s forest is being well protected and
managed by the blaa’ns, an indigenous group that inhabits the southern part of South
Cotabato. Mt. Matutum is one of the favorite climbing destination in the area and is
considered as an outstanding challenge to mountaineers and nature lovers. We
proceed to the pineapple fields under the shadows of Mt. Matutum in Polomolok. It is
considered the world’s biggest intergrated pineapple plantation, owned and operated by
Dole Philippines. Polomolok is also dubbed as pineapple country due to it’s vast and
fertile fields which is an awesome scenery that is waiting to be discovered. The
gorgeous fields have a fresh, tropical smell of ripe pineapple and kalachuchi flowers,
which gives a breathtaking view. That is a constant reminder of the beauty of the region.

Tour guide: I have here some delicacies of Polomolok and a pineapple, do you want to
taste it?

Tourist: Yes, of course, its our pleasure.

in South Cotabato. Unfortunately, it’s an endangered species due to deforestation and
illegal hunting. Tarsiers are known to commit suicide when in captivity and exposed to
stressors like camera flash, human touch and other form of disturbance. So tourists,
double check your phones okay? No camera flash so that the tarsier won’t disturbed.

Tourist : Who maintains the habitat of the tarsiers?

Tour guide : Today, the local government at the Blaa’n community. They work hard to
preserve the tarsier’s habitat.

WHILE IN THE BUS

well produce and preserved fruits from the Municipality of Tupi. If you’re into bottled fruit
jams, they’re from Tupi.
