Why We Board on the Left Side?

You might have failed to notice something rather impofiant - the side (0) at which you board the
plane. No matter where you're travelling, you will always ernbark (9) or disernbark from a door on the left-

hand side of the aircrafl. What's the deal'l Tirere (10) g1e a method to this ntadness, it tums out. First of all,
(11) do so directs foot traffic away fi'om the ground crew on the right-hand side, (12) whom are fuelling
up the plane and loading iuggage. What's more, the pilot usually sits (13) on the left-hand seat. So back in
the day, it (14) rs usefirl for the pilot to be able to judge rving clearance fiom the terrninal building and to
put the aircraft door in front of the terminal doors if it was on the lett side. Yet another explanation has
(15) fl roots in nautical tradition. Thanks to the placement of the 'steerboard' the rudder-like part on the
right-hand side of a boat - passengers had to boarcl fiou the boat's left side, also called the port. Aircraft
designers (16) fbllows the same convention.

Part 3
Read the text below and answer questions 17 to 24.

Many families travel far from home and spend months to get treatment for their seriously ill children.

That can often be a long time for parents to be away from their family. And for children facing a serious

medical crisis, nothing seems scarier than not having mums and dads close by for love and support.

A Rice Foundation Home's objective is to provide a home for families while their child is getting
medical care. These families can stay close by their hospitalised child at little to no cost. Our homes are

built on the simple idea that nothing else matters when a family is focused on their child's health. Families
shouldn't need to wory about where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal, or where they

will sleep for the night. We believe that our motto, 'Family Together', shows how important it is when a child

is hospitalised, the love and support of family is like the strongest medicine possible.

At every home, families can enjoy home-cooked meals, private bedrooms and playrooms for
children. Depending on the location, special selices may also be available. These services, such as education

programmes, help children continue with their school, recreational activities, non-clinical support selices

and even sibling support and counselling services.
