•  Menstruation : The
periodic discharge of
blood from the uterus
through the vagina
•  Normally happens
once in 28 days –
Menstrual Cycle
•  Starts from puberty –
Stops at about the age
of 50 when women
reaches menopause
•  Menopause : Ovaries
stop producing ova

•  Menstrual cycle happens due to changes in the
lining of the uterus
•  Menstrual cycle starts with menstruation –
happens during the first 5 days of the cycle
•  6th – 10th day : uterus lining becomes spongy with
tissues and blood vessels – ready to receive any
fertilized ovum

•  13th – 15th day : FERTILE
PERIOD as Ovulation
happens where Ovum
is being released out
•  Chances of ovum being
fertilized is high this
period
•  If the egg is not
fertilized, tissues and
blood vessels on the
uterus break away –
discharged together
with the ovum as
menses

•  If the egg is
fertilized :
–  Tissues and blood
vessels will not
break away
–  Zygote moves into
the uterus &
implant on it
(implantation)
–  Ovulation &
menstrual cycle
stop
•  Absence of
menstruation is
the first sign of
pregnancy

Personal Hygiene during Menstruation
•  Personal hygiene is
important to prevent :
–  Bacterial infection of the
genital organ
–  Fungus infection
–  Itching
–  Unpleasant odour
•  During menstruation:
–  Wear a suitable pad
–  Change the pad regularly
–  Disposed the pad properly
–  Not flushing out the pad
–  Wash genital organ with
suitable soap
