Project Planning and Scheduling

For any project, we have to plan how we will complete the project. Contraction work is directly
related to the cost and time, in the planning cost and planning get priority, other resources like
materials, equipment is also taken care of in this planning and scheduling. From this lecture,
we learn some of the terms like what is planning, scheduling, work package, and activity.
Project activity characterized the following criteria: If we can't measure anyone we can't pay
or we cannot measure the cost for it. All activities must have start and finish time. The activity
must be assign, it could be individual or group of people.
In this lecture, 5 key steps are involved in the planning and scheduling process.
Work breakdown structure: here we can see an example of how we can prepare a work
breakdown structure. We need to understand every element of that work. If we do not imagine
what will be required to ultimately shape this structure and what activities are there, we can’t
prepare it accurately. One contractor template may not match with the other contractor
template.
Define activity: Here we can see all the activities that are required to perform that building
work is listed here. Work description like clearing and layout, excavate, concrete foundations,
plumbing, etc. are comes directly from the breakdown structure.
Estimate activity duration: It means how long it will take to complete each activity.
Difference between start time and end time.
Work duration= (quantity of work/number of crews) ×production rate.
Estimate activity cost: Cost is directly related to activity duration as well as how many people
in terms of labor are engaged in that particular work. It involves material and equipment costs
also.
Labor cost=total work hour × wage rate.
Work sequencing: How all the activities are interrelated to each other, we have to prepare
those in a graphical form in a sequential way.
Develop schedule: Schedule can be prepared mainly 2 way: network diagram and bar chart.
Those are mainly used for preparing schedules in graphical form.
In both diagram shows necessary sequence and interdependency of activities to achieve the
project objective. Those diagrams include all of the tasks that are required to complete a
particular project. Both diagrams have start and finish time and in between all of the activity
that is required to finish this work.
Major scheduling method: One is a bar chart and the other is the sequence diagram. Under
the sequence diagram, there are two methods: CPM and PART method. CMP is a deterministic
method and PART is a probabilistic method.
If the kind of uncertainty is there then instead of the CPM method we use the PART method.
