This road is connected with all over Dhaka city. People can
easily go Baridhara, Badda, Hatirjheel, rampura, Notun
Bazar,Malibagh, mirpur,Uttara, etc place by using this road.
Even all district travelling vehicle also leave from this road.
The largest shopping mail in Bangladesh Jamuna Future Park
is also situated beside this road. Almost all branches of banks,
lots of University and school are situated in this area. Also a
lots of public and private vehicle runs every day in this area.

Cross-section area of pragoti Sarani road

Observational issues of my road

 My selected road has 3 lanes on each side, total of 6
lanes.
 Divider that can easily be toppled by pedestrians for
road crossing.
 A bus stand situated in this road.
 Two footpaths can take place on both sides of the road.
Most of the time these footpaths are blocked by
Hawkers.
 Bus stops in more places than the designated bus stop.

Page | 4
 Major hospital (Evercare hospital) is situated near the
road, so patients and unfit people often commute and
cross roads.
 All kinds of vehicle can be seen: starting from non-
motorized rickshaws, bicycles to motorized cycles,
bus, private cars and Lorries.
 Vehicles often be seen going on the wrong side to
wrongfully avoid u turn to enter an access road on the
opposite lane, to bypass traffic jam.
 Absolutely hogged during peak opening and closing
hours.
 Maintenance of road
 “Jamuna Future park” Nearby, therefore many children
and families near designated bus stop.
 A good number of restaurants also take place beside
the road.
 Narrow road spaces and overtaking tendency of
drivers.
 Violation of Traffic rules and regulations
 Faulty traffic signaling systems.
 Indiscriminate and random parking.
 There are no lanes lines painted on the road surface,
traffics don’t maintain lanes.
 A lot of apartment and shop is situated beside the road.
 Reckless Driving
 Different Speed Vehicle
 The adequacy of this road is not sufficient to carry this
vast population at a time.
Description of issues

Page | 5
Both motorized and non-motorized vehicles occupy the
same streets: In this road, motorized and non-motorized
vehicles occupy the same streets at the same time. Their speed
is different and that is why it creates congestion on that
particular street. I think rickshaw is the main cause of traffic
jam. Their structure and moving capability is also responsible
for traffic jam Most of the rickshaw “pullers,” or drivers, do not
have any training and they are not even aware of the traffic rules
and regulations.

Page | 6
Fig: Both motorized and non-motorized vehicles occupy the
same streets.

Dangerous crosswalk: Most of the time, the pedestrians cross

the busy streets even if there is no crosswalk. People do not
usually use the over bridges or underpasses, which are
constructed in the important and busy intersections of the road.

Page | 7
Page | 8
Fig:Dangerous crosswalk

Encroachment of roads and sidewalks:

Street vendors, Hawkers and street front shop owners occupy
above 30% of the footpaths of this road. The sidewalks are also
filled up by construction materials, garbage or even temporary
houses of homeless people or beggars.

Page | 9
Page | 10
Fig: Encroachment of roads and sidewalks

Illegal and Random Parking:

Illegal parking on this road causes traffic chaos and even

congestion. road space is severely inadequate compared to the
demand. Illegal parking on the road makes the traffic situation
even worse as it reduces the road capacity even more. Due to
parking of vehicles on the footpath, pedestrians are forced to
walk on the road. This causes a serious safety concern for the
pedestrians as they risk themselves being hit by oncoming
vehicles. In addition, pedestrians walking on the road leads to
road capacity being reduced even more, causing traffic chaos
and congestion.

Page | 11
Fig: Illegal and Random Parking

Improper Implementation of Traffic Rules:

Page | 12
Most important problem that could be realized that the people
of our country are not law abiding, they do not want to follow
traffic rules nevertheless they are forced to follow the rules.
Drivers neither try to follow the traffic rules. Police officials
forced them to follow the rules. Moreover, bribery pays a great
share in deterioration of overall traffic situation. Traffic polices
let the mischief happen on street just for some illegal payments.

Fig: Improper Implementation of Traffic Rules

Traffic Signal lights:

Page | 13
There is no traffic signal light in this road. Traffic police control
the traffic flow manually. Traffic is not properly control by the
traffic police. As a result huge traffic jam occurring in this road.

Finger: No traffic light

Maintenance of road: As a result of road maintenance a

serious traffic jam occurs. When a road maintain, a large
portion of a read get blocked, as a result fewer vehicles are
passing through this road so huge traffic jam occur.

Page | 14
Fig: Maintenance of road

Picking up passenger without bus stop: Bus drivers usually

Picking up passenger without bus stop, Mostly in the evening
time in front of the Basundhara gateSo,huge traffic can happen
in that time.

Page | 15
Fig: picking up passenger without bus stop

Bus stand: It is situated at the end of my selected block. People

go from one district to another district from here.Long distance
buses stop here as a result traffic jam occurs.

Page | 16
Fig: Bus stand

Different Speed Vehicle: low and fast moving vehicles are

running through the same road. As a result, slow moving
vehicles are making the fast moving vehicles slow. This is also
one of the important reasons of traffic jam.

Traffic Count on my road

We counted the traffic from 4 shift in a day . We counted people
and vehicles in different ways.
 first divided the road in 4 blocks and count the movement
of people in these different block

Page | 18

C D

 Here is divided four block and we count people at first

from block A to C . For each five minutes we count the
people . And C to A.

B D

A C
 Again we count people B to D and D to B
 Also count the people cross over the road A to B and C to
D.

From the table we can notice that , From 05:00-05:05 PM we

get the highest pedestrians moves by the road .Because at that
time school college, office, factory was closed and People go
home after there work.
In this project we assure a limited measurement of road . That
has bound to in 996 feet length . So we collect the amount of
vehicle passes by this road , speed , congested time with a field
observation .
We observe the amount of vehicles passes by this road in
different time . The amount of vehicle is given below .
At 09:00- 09:15 AM (15 minute)
Direction Quantity
B to D 192
A to C 203

At 12:45- 01:00 PM (15 minute)

For a significant lane , How much it carries vehicle an average

number is given bellow:
For B to D lane it carries in a hour = 192+92+296+128=708
vehicle
And For A to C it carries in a hour = 203+72+245+154=674
vehicle.
So every 15 min B to D lane carries avg. = 708/4=177 vehicle
And A to C lane carries avg. = 674/4=169 vehicle .

Vehicle speed count

The length of the road = 996 feet = 303.5808 meter ≈ 304
meter.
We collect four times velocity of different types of vehicles.

Page | 22
Using formula v= s/t to find out the velocity.

At 9.00 AM
Types of Length(m) Time (t) Velocity (v)
vehicle
Bus 304 30 sec 10.13 ms-1
Truck/Van 304 35 sec 8.68 ms-1
Car 304 26 11.69 ms-1
Microbus 304 23 13.21 ms-1
CNG 304 28 10.85 ms-1
Motorbike 304 21 14.47 ms-1

At 12:45 PM
Types of Length(m) Time (t) Velocity (v)
vehicle
Bus 304 18 sec 18.88 ms-1
Truck/Van 304 20 sec 15.02 ms-1
Car 304 15 20.26 ms-1
Microbus 304 15 20.26 ms-1
CNG 304 18 18.88 ms-1
Motorbike 304 12 25.00 ms-1

At 5.00 PM
Types of Length(m) Time (t) Velocity (v)
vehicle
Bus 304 58 sec 5.24 ms-1
Truck/Van 304 65 sec 4.67 ms-1
Car 304 52 5.84 ms-1
Page | 23
Microbus 304 53 5.73 ms-1
CNG 304 55 5.52 ms-1
Motorbike 304 48 6.33 ms-1

At 8.00 PM
Types of Length(m) Time (t) Velocity (v)
vehicle
Bus 304 22 sec 13.81 ms-1
Truck/Van 304 24 sec 12.66 ms-1
Car 304 19 16.00 ms-1
Microbus 304 19 16.00 ms-1
CNG 304 22 13.81 ms-1
Motorbike 304 17 17.88 ms-1

So about the approximate avg. velocity of each vehicle in a

day Bus = (10.13+18.88+5.24+13.81) ms-1 =12.01 ms-1
Truck/Van = (8.68+15.02+4.67+12.66)ms-1 =10.25 ms-1
Car = (11.69+20.26+5.84+16) ms-1=13.44 ms-1
Microbus = (13.21+20.26+5.73+16) ms-1=13.8 ms-1
CNG = (10.85+18.88+5.52+13.81) ms-1=12.26 ms-1
Motorbike = (14.47+25+6.33+17.88) ms-1=15.92 ms-1
So,
So, now Average velocity of vehicle of this road =
(12.01+10.25+13.44+13.8+12.26+15.92)/6= 12.95 ms-1
Result : The average velocity is 12.95 ms-1

Page | 24
Result Analysis
From this table and we can see that:
I. At afternoon (after 4.30 pm) pedestrian increased in a big
amount.
II. Vehicles are increasing especially in the morning and in
the afternoon.
III. Small vehicle move here faster than big vehicle.
IV. In the pick hour velocity decrease because of traffic jam
V. At noon vehicle runs so fast without any traffic.
VI. The average velocity is 12.95 ms-1 in the both lane(we
ignore rickshaw)

Lac of equipment
 There is no speed breaker.
 No zebra crossing
 Due to lack of supervision, we saw the dirt on the
roadside land.
 There is no lanes for an ambulance.
 One lane Blocked by CNG, Rickshaw and Motorcycle
 Inadequate manpower.
 No lane mark is visible in road.

Potential Solution

Page | 25
Pragoti Sarani road is one of the important road because
it connect all over Dhaka City. Reviewing all this picture
and table,we can see that the condition of this road is not
good at all. I am discussing below to solve some
problems for the overall improvement of this road.
 Traffic control system should be improved a lot.
 Illegal shops should be removed from the pavement
and made suitable for movement on the pavement.
 Stopping reverse vehicle running must need
 Need some more speed breaker on this road
 Repair all parts of the road that are broken.
 Forcing law enforcement to follow traffic rules
properly.
 Traffic police should be increase and latest traffic
control system should be supply.
 Illegal parking should be stopped.
 All manhole covers on the pavement that are open
must be closed immediately.
 Picking up and drop off passengers without
stopping vehicle must be stopped.
