Folding Durability Test Standard for Seatbacks of

S711 1/3
Four-wheeled Vehicles

1. Purpose
1.1 This standard is intended to confirm the relationships between the repeated folding
operations of the seatback by a passenger and the irregularities of the seatback.

2. Application
2.1 It shall apply to folding seatbacks of a seatback lock type of four-wheeled vehicles.
However, as for separate seats that are symmetrical and having exactly the same
conditions in relation to the centerline of the vehicle, it may apply to only one seat on
either right or left side.

3. State of test piece

3.1 As a test piece, a seat back assembly with the heaviest specified weight shall be used.
Notice that the test piece shall be equipped with any required adjustment devices as
well as equipment such as the headrest, seat belt, etc. after coordinating with relevant
departments.

3.2 Bolts and nuts used for assembling the test piece shall be tightened with the lowest
value in the specified tightening torque range.

3.3 Bolts and nuts used for assembling the test piece shall be marked together with the
mounting surface after tightening, so that the amounts of rotation by loosening of the
bolts and nuts can be identified.

3.4 As a general rule, one test piece shall be tested among test pieces having the same
shape.

4. Test method
4.1 The adjustment devices for the test piece shall be set at the design standard positions.

4.2 The jig for fixing the test piece shall be a rigid body, and the condition shall be as close
as possible to the state of an actual vehicle.

4.3 Operate the seatback operating lever, and lay the seatback in the folded state.

4.4 Lift up the seatback to be in the seating state.

4.5 With the operations of 4.3 and 4.4 being counted as 1 cycle, start the operation
durability test. (Example of operation: Fig. 1)

4.6 The operating speed shall be 5±3 seconds/cycle.

4.7 After starting the test, measure the operating force of the seatback operating lever
upon completion of 0 cycle, 500 cycles, 1,000 cycles, and 2,000 cycles, and at the
same time check the seatback for any irregularity. If there is any irregularity, record its
details with color photos or sketches.

4.8 The specified number of times for durability shall be 3,000 cycles.

4.9 After completion of the specified number of times for durability, leave the test piece in
the folded state for 24 hours.

4.10 After leaving it for 24 hours, measure the operating force of the seatback operating
lever, and at the same time check the seatback for any irregularity. If there is any
irregularity, record its details with color photos or sketches. Notice that the test piece
may be disassembled.

4.11 Organizing data

4.11.1 Record the results of 4.7 and 4.10.
4.11.2 Record the amounts of rotation by loosening of bolts and nuts as angles.
4.11.3 Any abnormal noise, rubbing on the covering, cracks in the pad,
dented surface caused by the seat belt or headrest, cracks in the frame,
etc. shall also be recorded.

5. Evaluation criteria and requirements

5.1 Until reaching the specified number of times for durability, the folding operation of the
seatback shall be capable of being performed.

5.2 Until reaching the specified number of times for durability, there shall be no breakage
of the seatback.

5.3 Until reaching the specified number of times for durability, there shall be no cutting off
of the pad (there shall be no breakage of the covering as has been caused by the
frame).

5.4 Until reaching the specified number of times for durability, there shall be no loosening
of the bolts and nuts.

6. Reference
6.1 None.

7. Remarks
7.1 Other matters shall be determined through separate discussions with relevant
departments.
