INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The year 2020 had astound everyone with COVID-19, an infectious disease

caused by a new strain of coronavirus that has an estimated 50 percent possibility of

transmission through droplets produced when an infected person sneeze, cough or exhale.

The virus had been detected first in Wuhan, China and it rapidly spread worldwide that

caused a lot of changes in people’s lives especially the students. With the pandemic still

going on, the schools, teachers, and parents found an alternative way of learning to

continue the student’s education without disobeying the health protocols, which is online

education. It is a form of education that is delivered and administered using electronic

devices and the internet. Online education has taken over traditional education amidst the

pandemic, it had changed the concept of teaching and learning of traditional education.

The students had experience different situations and effects with online education

because of this pandemic.

Review of Related Literature

The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the current public health emergencies of

global concern that started in China and infected almost every country around the globe.

This disease is caused by a novel coronavirus and has received global attention from

growing infections and on how to eradicate the disease and flatten the curve of infections

(Guo et al., 2020). The battle against the threats to COVID-19 pandemic suffered deep

effects and collisions on almost all sectors in the human race. Responses like community
lockdown and community quarantine of several countries have led students and teachers

to study and work from home which led to the implementation of online education

(Crawford et al., 2020). However, the delivery of online learning created different risks,

complications, and challenges to both the teachers and students, especially in the higher

education institutions (HEIs) (Bao, 2020). In response to these situations, educational

leaders decided to take on the new normal in education.

Online education is an emerging area that lies at the intersection of distance

education, human-computer interaction, instructional technology, and cognitive science

(Larreamendy-Joerns & Leinhardt, 2006). Distance education includes the numerous

forms of study at all levels which are not under the immediate supervision of tutors

present with their students in lecture rooms or on the same premises, but which,

nevertheless, benefit from the planning, guidance and tuition of a tutorial organization

(Holmberg, 1986). Many researchers think that technology is a tool that used to eradicate

geographical barriers and to ease learning anytime and anywhere without presence of

lectures which may enrich deeper learning. They argue that E-learning has plenty

advantages that include flexibility of access from different locations, ease of access to

other materials from other sources that including non-educational ones (Elfaki, N. K.,

Abdulraheem, I., & Abdulrahim, R., 2019).

The Internet has become a part of the lives of every student and a mean to

research for information as and when it is needed. These days, the use of mobile phones

for internet motives has become a routine and various of mobile consumers accessing the

Internet is outdoing fixed line internet users. Smartphones with the ability of always
connected makes it effortless for the students to avail this type of education facility and

makes a Smartphone the perfect fit device for distance learning.

The achievement of students is negatively correlated with the low socioeconomic

status level of parents because it hampers the individual in obtaining access to sources

and resources of learning (Duke, 2000; Eamon, 2005; Lopez, 1995). Low socioeconomic

status level firmly affects the achievement of students, dragging them down to a lower

level (Sander, 2001). There is a range of aspects that can affect on the quality of

performance of students (Waters & Marzano, 2006). A sequence of variables is to be

considered when to determine the influencing factors towards standard of academic

success. Identifying the most contributing variables in quality of academic performance is

a very complex and demanding job. Depending on demography, the students in public

schools belong to a variation of backgrounds.

Research Questions

Research Question: What are the experiences of Grade 10 students from Ramon Teves

Pastor Memorial – Dumaguete Science High School on Online Education?

The purpose of this study is to determine The Experience of Grade 10 Students of

Ramon Teves Pastor Memorial – Dumaguete Science High School on Online Education.

This research aimed to answer the following questions:

1. What is the perception of online students on online education?

2. How does online education affect a student’s academic performance?

3. What do students usually feel after seeing the effects of online education on their

academic performance?

Significance of the Study

The purpose of the study is to determine the experience of Grade 10 Students of

Ramon Teves Pastor Memorial – Dumaguete Science High School on Online Education.

Main effects and how online classes change the distribution of the students’ learning are

examined. This study also sought to know how online classes substantially change the

nature of interactions and poor communication between students, peers, and teachers. At

this stage in the research, this study will be generally defined as how to consider the

challenges and flexibility of online learning.

This study will help teachers understand new approaches in teaching. This could

be used as a framework for assessing a student's level of academic achievement. Since

lectures can be accessible through the Internet, this will also minimize the level of

work teachers spend in teaching their students.

Helps parents in handling their children on situations that will help their academic

performances, especially in situations involving uncontrollable use of social networking

sites. Researchers will be benefited by serving this study as a guide on conducting further

study.

The findings of this research study would help the following people directly or

indirectly by giving them information on the outcomes of a student's success in terms of

Academic Performance, helping teachers, parents, and students to consider the potential

consequences and advantages of online education on their studies.

Scopes and Limitations

This study seeks to examine the experiences of Grade 10 students from Ramon

Teves Pastor Memorial – Dumaguete Science High School on online education during

the COVID-19 pandemic. The researchers conducted an online interview via Zoom

application for the data collection of the study. This study was limited to only ten (10)

Grade 10 students from Ramon Teves Pastor Memorial – Dumaguete Science High

School.

Definition of Terms

In order to further understand the purpose of the study, take note of the following

terms:

Online Education – the provision of two-way communication via a computer

network so that students may benefit from communication with each other,

teachers, and staff.

E-Learning – interactive learning in which the learning content is available

online and provides automatic feedback to the student’s learning activities.

Academic Performance – the measurement of student achievement across

various academic subjects.

CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

Research Design
A qualitative approach was the design chosen for this research study, using

interviews and impressions to obtain relevant data. Rather than assessing cause and

effect, qualitative analysis focuses on comprehending a circumstance or event and

analyzing the perspectives of subjects to give it meaning. The aim of the interview is to

comprehend and understand the significance of the interactions that learners express

during online learning. During online learning, the qualitative approach focuses on the

interactions and influences that affect student performances. The data collection used in

this study is consisted of interview and documentation. For this research, the qualitative

approach is suitable because as the gathered and used data relies on the subjective

perspectives of the participants themselves.

Research Locale and Time of the Study

The respondents were interviewed in their homes and at their current destinations.

Participants have been interviewed via video chat. Zoom was used to document the

outcomes of the web call, which were then converted into a transcript for further study.

Two respondents were assigned to each researcher. The researchers conducted individual

interviews with their assigned respondents during the zoom conference. The researchers

further discussed the study’s main objective, as well as the participants’ right to decline.

After that, if there is a technical issue such as a malfunctioning microphone or audio, the

researcher creates a report and review, then proceeds to the interview. The interviewees

were also provided sufficient time to answer the questions, were allowed to use their

language of choice to respond, and were given the opportunity of showing their face via

webcam or not. The junior high students of RTPM-DSHS, specifically Grade 10 students,
were the subject of this research. This research is a qualitative study aimed at evaluate the

factors that lead to the experiences of Grade 10 students during online learning.

Sampling Procedure

The researchers gathered data from RTPM-DSHS which consisted of a total of ten

(10) students; eight (8) females and two (2) males. The set of participants were currently

enrolled in an online class. The respondents were selected to take advantage of the new

setting of grade 10 RTPM-DSHS which was the transition to online learning from

traditional learning. To gather the experiences of the said students were needed since it

was the respondents’ first time in that situation. All of the respondents agreed to

participate in the interview conducted by the researchers. The respondents were chosen

because they met the criteria of being a grade 10 student from RTPM-DSHS and they

also had experience online learning which was needed for the research.

Data Collection Procedure

For the purposes behind this study, in depth interview was used. In depth

interviews are personal and unstructured interviews, whose aim is to identify the

respondent’s emotions, feelings, and opinions regarding a particular research topic.

Interviews were done virtually via Zoom, a communications technology that allows

anyone to set up virtual video and audio meeting. The conduction of the research

involved the use of semi-structured questionnaire, which served as an interview guide for

the researchers.
On January 22, 2021, letters were sent to 10 corresponding participants. The

interviews were scheduled right away with the respondents’ time preference. During the

interview, the session was recorded using the Record option on the Zoom application

which directly saves the file into a folder.

Ethical Consideration

The following ethical guidelines were put into place for the research period:

1. The dignity and wellbeing of respondents were protected at all cost.

2. The research data remained confidential throughout the study and the researcher

obtained the students’ permission to use their real names in the research report.

Conclusions

Based on the data gathered, the researchers concluded that online education has

an effect on the academic performance of Grade 10 students of Ramon Teves Pastor

Memorial – Dumaguete Science High School. Online education can affect a student’s

academic performance either negatively or positively. The students’ average scores

became immensely high, but mental and emotional health has become a common issue.
Since online learning has a massive difference from face-to-face learning, students find it

difficult to cope up with the new normal.

Recommendations

For further investigation, the researchers highly recommend the future analysts to

focus more on other instances that show the effects of online education towards students.

In addition to this, having more respondent can give the gathered data more efficient

results.

INTERVIEW WITH INTERVIEWEE #4
Name: Angelo Tolledo
Via Zoom
Date: January 24, 2021
IR: Good evening. Thank you so much for giving us a
chance to interview you about our research entitled
“The Effects of Online Education on Grade 10 Students
of Ramon Teves Pastor Memorial – Dumaguete Science
High School during COVID-19 Pandemic.” Let us begin.
May you state your name and section?
IE: Hi, my name is Angelo S. Tolledo. I am from section
Andromeda.
IR: Are you taking up modular or online classes?
IE: Currently I am taking up online classes during this pandemic.
IR: What is your perception on online education? And what do
you think is the purpose of this?
IE: So my perception on online education is that this is very
fresh and still new to many people especially to the
students, teachers, and to our parents as well. And
because of this, I think that it has come up with a lot Fresh and new system
of disadvantages since there are this technological…
technology issues… uhm… some students are not
able to… uhm… really focus on screen and other
teachers are not well trained for this kind of platform.
But looking also at the positive side, I think that this kind
of learning is more efficient since… like what is
happening… uhh… currently that we are having Edmodo
and Zoom and through this, it is more convenient for
teachers to send… and to… uhm… to send their learning
materials and to easily teach students.
IR: In the midst of a pandemic, do you think online education
is an effective way of learning? Why or why not?
IE: So as for what I have experienced, I think that online
education is not that effective as to face-to-face since…
uhm… there are these factors that really affect your Lesser learnings

learning and sometimes murag less ra imohang ma

learn since one meeting is like… too many things to
study but after another week, we have to learn another
things na murag malimtan nalang nimo ang murag gi
discuss last week so I think it’s… less effective.
IR: Does online education affect your academic performance?
In what way and why do you think so?
IE: As for what I have experienced… uhm… online education
really affected my academic performance since there are
these issues sometimes na during exams in Edmodo and Internet connectivity issues
some quizzes or activities, mu-reload ra siya ug kalit since
there are internet problems man jud and we still need to
confront teachers and provide them with proof para lang
maka-take or ma-consider na nay problem and… pero it also
has affected me in a positive way since… uhm… it has
enhanced my time management skills… yah.
IR: Is there a difference between your academic performance
during the face-to-face classes compared to online classes?
IE: Yes, I think there is a difference.
IR: What are these and why do think of such differences?
IE: First of all is the learnings since as what I have said
before… kay murag ma connect ra nimo siya day
after day ang imong na learn kay murag dili man isink-in
tanan didto sa usa ka adlaw imong kuan since ma process Open search engines
man nimo siya unlike karun na murag… one week malimtan
nimo kay another week, lain napud inyong idiscuss and also
ang pag listen nimo sa teacher ‘cause if mag face-to-face,
you really have to be attentive since wala may google na
unlike karun na puwede ra nimo siyang isearch if ever wala
kay ika-answer… Puwede ka maka ask dayun sa imong
mga classmates through chats and other ways na murag
mas convenient nimo na mag answer ka sa mga exams or
mga orals… ingana.
IR: Okay so what do you usually feel after seeing the
differences of online classes on your academic performance?
IE: Uhm… During the first grading, I think… uhm… I’m happy
and contented with my grades since I am able to cope with Difficulty in processing lessons
all the performance, output, and the activities that are
need to be done and… pero honestly… I am also quite
sad because of the fact na murag nalimtan nako ang ubang
mga gipangtudlo sa teacher since… murag daghan ra kaayo
nga lisod kaayo isink-in sa mind… Mao rana siya.
IR: So how do you cope up with these effects?
IE: I think na… the major factor nan aka-help nako to go
through the first grading is really time management since
ang mga teachers kay ang uban murag palami rapud Time management skills

sila muhatag ug mga outputs na imong ipasa and dapat

jud ka murag… well-organized sa imong time if kanus-a
ka mubuhat ani… ug ingana…
IR: Alright. That sums up our interview for tonight. Thank
you so much sa imong time, Mr. Tolledo. Have a blessed
Sunday.

during this pandemic?
IE: Online Classes
IR: What is your perception on online education?
IE: Uhm (dog barking) my perception on online
education is its something kuan na, ma- the students Self-learning
are like independent learning gani. Gamay ra ang kuan
sa teachers, gamay ra ang unsay tawag ani, ambag
sa teachers. So its more on self-learning kaysa sa
ano interactive ganern.
IR: What do you think is the purpose of online classes
during COVID-19 pandemic?
IE: (dog barking) Okay so I think the purpose of online
learning is to para dili ma stop ang eduction na bisag
naay pandemic kay the learning never stops. Kay if ma Continue education

if mag stop man gud ang kuan like if wala juy school
kay feel nako dili kayo, they’re just doing it for the
students para pd if ever man pag balik na back to

IR: In the midst of a pandemic, do you think online
education is an effective way of learning? Why or why not?
IE: Uhh okay go so, I don’t think na online learning is
an effective way of teaching students especially now na
we’re in a pandemic because aside sa naa tas pandemic, Adding more stress

uhm we are facing a lot of emotional stress, physical stress

(dog barking) from the current situation now we are facing
right now and adding up another factor to stress about is not

good. And dili pud kaayo sya effective na especially na
there is some students like me, na dili makasabot na sa
screen ra, through screen. Yeah like me, dili ko makasabot
if dili sya ano gani kanang gitudlo minaayo. I’m a slow learner Learning won’t retain

man gud pud and yeah lisod sya e kuan e adjust sa ingani na
situation and I feel like ang knowledge na atong ma learn through
online classes kay they don’t retain, dili sya mo last long sa ato’un.
IR: Does online education affect your academic performance?
IE: Uhh I think it affects my academic performance.
IR: In what way does it affect your academic performance?
IE: In a good way cause karon its easier for teachers to give you high
grades para nako hinuon. Kay dili kaayo sila taas ug expectation Higher grades
from us kay its online class (dog barking) and its mostly self-learning,
independent learning and most of the things we do its 80%
of the students I think 80% of the students efforts. So dili kaayo Less pressure
sila mo put ug pressure so in that way kay murag dako dako
ra ilang (dog barking) ihatag. Pero when it comes to learning
kay dili kaayo sya mura bag dako kag grade pero you don’t No learning
think na you deserve that kind of grade kay we’re not really

during the face-to-face classes compared to online classes?
IE: Oo uhm yeah there is really a big difference.
IR: What do you think is the difference between your academic
performance on online?
IE: Kay even though sa face-to-face kay I get like, I don’t really
get high grades compared to my grades right now but I can Learns more

say na I’ve learned a lot compared sa online.

IR: Why do you think of such differences?
IE: It is also in a way na sa face-to-face (dog barking) kay ang
learning mas effective ingana and sa online karon dili kaayo.
IR: What do you usually feel after seeing the effects of online
education on your academic performance?
IE: Uhm my reaction to that will be like its saddening char saddening, Sad

wala ra kay sometimes man gud online classes can be draining

ingana. Drained
IR: How do you cope up with these effects?
IE: And like how I cope up with them is that I just try to think
positively na soon if we all work hand in hand na this
pandemic will be over soon. And kaning online classes is Positive thinking
for us raman pud to review and to ano our brains ingana.
So yeah just think positively ingana and nya laban lang!

para makalearn ang mga students while naa sila sa

ra sila magsalig ra sa online, sa google. For me it is
partly effective, but for some like dependent ra kaayo sa

nimo. Pero kaning online classes kay naa ra sa balay sige nya
murag mawalaan jod kag motivation kay mag tutok ra sa screen
tapos makatapol jod sya.
IR: Why do you think of such differences?
IE: Maybe because we lack communication with friends. Lahi rajod
ng naa ka physically with them nya makauban nimo sila rather Lack of communication

than through chat ra na makahelp nimo.

IR: What do you usually feel after seeing the effects of online

to online education was too sudden. Our school
don’t use online educational platforms like Edmodo, Unexpected change

IR: In what way does it affect your academic performance?
IE: It affects productivity and willingness to do tasks/assignments
because I’m always facing the screen. It’s more tiring than Laziness and

But with online classes, I find myself too quiet and limited when
it comes to essay makings and class discussions. When it come
to projects, I don’t do them manually anymore since we’re not
required to drop-off our outputs.
IR: Why do you think of such differences?
IE: Maybe this is because of the screen time online classes
requires. For me, I get tired easily these days since online classes
started because of just sitting down, listening to discussions on Tiring
