Human Rapacity: Beyond Nature’s Capacity

Terrence McKenna, a famous lecturer and author rightly said,“ It is not nature that is
mute, it is man who is deaf.”
Once there was a time, when the lusciousness of nature satisfied all the necessary
needs of man. This happy ecological balance received a severe jolt when men
everywhere planed for rapid industrialization.
Man thought that these great developments would cure them of all their difficulties.
So, the humans first did not mind when the deforestation first began on a large scale.
The godly forests were destroyed for making of industries and factories. This caused
reckless cutting of forests, continuous damming of rivers and conversion of fertile
agricultural lands into commercial complexes. Humans slowly began tasting the little
benefits that they achieved. They never thought about the bitter consequences of
their acts.
Slowly, man began to realise what tremendous demolition they had caused to their
Mother Earth. They began to get terrified and angered by the mere consequences of
their own acts. Taking instance of Kuwait, the very country where we live, the global
climatic change has led to a colossal rise in the temperature with it reaching as high
as about 54 degree Celsius. The dire consequences that have taken place due to the
rapid industrialisation has made us feel as if there is a need for the setting up of an
industry to lower pollution levels and temperature!! Green forestry acts as the lungs
of the Earth. How long can we selfish beings survive if we have no lungs?? Our late
realisation has already led to a gigantic loss that cannot be rectified.
There are many ways in which we can begin to better our environment. One does
not have to be an erudite person to know the numerous advantages of recycling.
The simple task of recycling is a very powerful way for renewing our supply of natural
resources and helping the environment. If we retrench the high amount of energy we
use in our homes, we can conserve lots.
Our gossamer world is not something that society should take for granted. If we
choose to take care of our environment now, the world might become a much better
place. If we choose to not take the important precautions, our world might become a
desolate grassland soon with no inhabitants.
Erich Fromm, a philosopher, once said, “Greed is a bottomless pit which exhausts the
person in an endless effort to satisfy the need without ever getting satisfaction.”
