ABSTRACT
This abstract contains brief details about the proposal on the project concerned with the
maintenance of the bridge, connecting Kathmandu and Lalitpur, over Bagmati river located at
Kupondole. The Kathmandu-Lalitpur route is one of the busiest ones. Over the decade, the
condition of the bridge linking Kathmandu and Lalitpur has been degrading. Therefore, the
necessity to enhance the bridge is of prime importance. The main objective of submitting this
proposal is to undertake the project and improve the condition of the bridge. Throughout the
project, road and bridge engineers along with skilled manpower and resources will be utilized to
a huge extent. An approximate budget of Rs. 200,000,000 (Twenty crore rupees) is estimated to
be required for the completion of this project. On the completion of this project, it is expected to
facilitate effective and secure transportation of vehicles and commute of people which has
become a major problem for the public for a significant period due to the current state of the
bridge.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
The bridge over Bagmati river joining Kathmandu to Lalitpur is an important route for
transportation as there are many vehicles moving from one town to the other everyday. Over the
past years, the condition of the bridge at Koteshwor has worsened. This has led to the difficulty
in daily commute from Kathmandu to Lalitpur and vice versa. Due to the critical state of the
bridge, other alternative routes which are longer and hectic have to be used. Koteshwor, being of
the busiest places of Kathmandu has a very heavy traffic every day. The traffic is very difficult to
resolve and control. People have to go through uncontrollable and troublesome traffic which
makes them frustrated and angry. The poor quality of the bridge has invited many basic problems
in public transport.
Considering the problems, the Ministry of Road and Transport has decided to carry out
maintenance of the bridge at Koteshwor and has recently published a public notice requesting
qualified consultancies to submit their proposal showing their interest to undertake the project on
the maintenance of the bridge over Bagmati river linking Kathmandu and Lalitpur. In response to
the same public notice, this proposal has been presented. The estimated budget calculated for the
successful accomplishment of the project is Rs. 200,000,000. Once this project is completed, it is
expected to facilitate the transportation route from Kathmandu to Lalitpur and solve the existing
problems of traffic and insecurity of the bridge.
RATIONALE
Since the commuters of both cities, Kathmandu and Lalitpur, are facing a lot of inconvenience
travelling from one city to the other due to the lack of maintenance of the bridge causing it to
become fragile and less secure and although the urban cities are going under the phase of
infrastructural development with general people feeling the lag of progress in transportation
sector, the concerned Ministry has planned to address the public demands and sentiments by
renovating the bridge at Koteshwor within this year and has published a notice asking the
interested consultancies to submit their proposals for handling the project. This proposal aims at
undertaking the responsibility of maintenance of the bridge to overcome the problem of traffic
and providing ease at transport for the public within shortest possible time frame.
OBJECTIVES
The general objective of the present project is to solve the problem of inconvenience felt in
transportation by the public everyday caused by the lack of strong maintenance of the bridge
over Bagmati river at Koteshwor. The project aims to repair vulnerable and damaged bridge
connecting Kathamandu to Lalitpur and enhance its durability.
Specific Objectives
● To implement new technologies to keep the bridge safe and secured for a long period of
time.
● To provide the local inhabitants of both cities with the facility of better transportation.
● To eliminate the complication in commute faced by the general public.
METHODOLOGY
During the course of this project, locally available materials and resources will be utilized as
much as possible and skilled, trained and experienced human resources and manpower will be
hired to work on the bridge. In case of insufficiency felt in the local resources, raw materials,
laborers and other necessary equipment, hire and purchase of required human resources and
things will be adopted to fulfill the requirements.
