ASSIGNEMENT – II

Date of Submission: 11.01.2020

Theory Question:

1. Discuss the factors affecting evaporation.

2. Discuss the relative merits and demerits of evaporimeters.
3. Draw and label the ISI standard evaporation pan.
4. Discuss the factors affecting infiltration rate.
5. Describe how infiltration capacity rate can be measured using a double ring infiltrometer
6. Define:
(a) Evaporation
(b) Transpiration
(c) Evapotranspiration and consumptive use
(d) Pan coefficient
(e) Actual and potential evapotranspiration
(f) Field capacity and wilting point.
(g) Infiltration capacity
(h) Infiltration rate
(i) Infiltration Indices.

Problems:

1. A 6h storm produced rainfall intensities of 7, 18, 25, 12, 10 and 3 mm/h in successive one-
hour intervals over a basin of 800 sq.km. The resulting runoff is observed to be 2640 hectare-
meters. Determine ø-index for the basin.

2. In Horton's infiltration capacity curve, initial infiltration capacity = 2 cm/h and final capacity =
0.3 cm/h. If rainfall intensity is more than infiltration capacity, what is the total depth of
infiltration in a duration of 0h to 4h, if decay constant k = 0.8/h.

3. The rates of rainfall for successive 30 min period of 210 min storm are: 3.5, 4.0, 12.0, 8.5, 4.5,
4.5 and 3.0 cm/hr. Assuming the φ-index of 3.5 cm/hr, find out the net rainfall in cm, the total
rainfall and the value of W-index.
