Webinar: ICE Exxplains: The 2020 Marikina and Cagayan Flooding

Speaker: Dr. Guillermo Q. Tabios III, Professor Emeritus, UP Institute of Civil Engineering
I have learned information on the recent Marikina and Cagayan Flooding. There was a

direct relationship with the decrease of natural flood mitigating trees due to quarrying and the

amount of runoff that accumulated in the rivers of Marikina and Cagayan. Furthermore, these

areas are valleys meaning are enveloped in mountain ranges which makes them the catch basins

for the runoff from the precipitation in mountains. The speaker suggested that reforestation
must be done to reduce the accumulation of flood water in these rivers which has a limit or

boundary before overflow.
