INTRODUCTION OF TOPIC:

• Self-defense is a countermeasure that involves defending the health and well-being of


oneself from harm.The use of the right of self-defense as a legal justification for the use
of force in times of danger is available in many jurisdictions.

• Self defense is essentially necessary for an individual for the protection of one self and
other loved ones.

• Along with the self defense yoga and meditation are also a very integral part of ones
mental and physical health.

MARTIAL ARTS-

• Martial arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practiced for a number of
reasons such as self-defense; military and law enforcement applications; competition;
physical, mental, and spiritual development; entertainment; and the preservation of a
nation's intangible cultural heritage.

HISTORY OF THE TOPIC-

• Going back in history, I learnt that martial arts originated in India and then spread to
other counties of the Orient, including China, Korea, Mongolia and Japan.
• While Buddhists texts in India have plenty of references to different styled of fighting,
there are several other which are not much known outside the region of their birth.

• Bodhidharma was a South Indian prince, the third son of his father, who arrived in China
after a harrowing three-year sea voyage during which he also broke journey in Indonesia
• When Bodhidharma joined the monks, he observed that they were not in good physical
condition. Most of their routine revolved around spending hours each day hunched over
tables where they transcribed handwritten texts. Consequently, the Shaolin monks lacked
the physical and mental stamina needed to perform even the most basic of Buddhist
meditation practices. Bodhidharma countered this weakness by teaching them moving
exercises, designed to both enhance chi flow and build strength. These sets, modified from
Indian yoga (mainly hatha, and raja) were based on the movements of the 18 main animals
in Indo-Chinese iconography.This is thought by some to be the beginnings of Shaolin Kung
Fu.

• Martial arts in karnataka-

• One of the earliest martial art is Vajra Musti or fighting with knuckles. There are regional
variations of this art and the it still survives in Mysore and Gwalior. Both the Wodeyars of
Mysore and Gaekwads of Gwalior were patrons of this art.
• The Chalukya Emperor, Someshwara, has written about this art as has the Buddhist text,
“The Lotus Sutra”, which belongs to Mahayana branch of Buddhism.
• Another native form is the Kalaripayattu of Kerala. It is one of the oldest forms of
fighting that still exists in the world. It generally includes strikes, kicks, grappling, preset
forms, weaponry and healing methods. It has three main styles-north, central and south.
• Though the south style is now extinct, the Tamil style of Adi Murai is classified as the
southern kalarippayattu by Kerala Kalarippayattu association.

• The Malla Yuddha is an Indian form of wrestling and one of the many variants is still
existing in Mysore and Bangalore. The Wodeyar Emperor, Ranadheera Kanteerva was an
expert as were Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. The place where wrestlers practice is called
Garadi Mane. Mysore has more than two dozens such manes and Bangalore has a few in
Ranasinghpet.

SCOPE:

• The chosen city i.e shimoga is a natural beauty and is covered with lush greens and
nature so to provide a self defense school in such a place will only enhance and motivate
the learning process.

IDEOLOGY OF DESIGN :

• The idea of the project is to make or create a safe space for learning martial arts and
other techniques of self defense .
• In india there are many forms of martial arts practiced but there are two main
categories I,e traditional and western martial arts.
• My idea of deisgn is to provide or combine both of these distinct forms of martial arts
in one space where students from across the country can learn both the form of
martial arts.
• To help promote knowledge of both our Indian martial arts and western martial arts.

kalari Gurukulam is a training and research centre for the ancient martial art form of
Kalaripayattu.This institution headed by Guru Ranjan Mullaratt is Dedicated to train,
promote, encourage, and disseminate the art and science Kalaripayattu, it conducts
training classes, conducts workshops, holds events and performances, and publishes
study and research material about Kalaripayattu.

• The institute is located in the outskirts of Bangalore, the capital city of Karnataka,
India. It features a traditional Kalari built with mud and other earthy elements as
well as a modern studio for interested practitioners and trainees. The modern studio
is located on the Brigade Road, just behind the St. Patrick’s Church. With facilities
for residential training as well as day-to-day training for Kalari enthusiasts,
Gurukulam promotes Kalaripayattu through public performances, awareness events,
as well as publications. Gurukulam seeks to spread the knowledge of the art of
Kalaripayattu across the country and the world.

• Kalari Gurukulam conducts regular training classes and workshops, hold events and

• It is a space of 2000m² with three rooms equipped with high quality specialist
training floor, judo and karate tatami mats, training mirrors, punching bags and
handles for TRX equipment. changing rooms consist of three rooms with showers,
heated floors, ventilated cabinets.

• Hall 1 large "L" shape: 50m x 30m x 14m, height 3.80m

• The canteen is located in a the same bulding as reception. In addition to traditional
tables, restaurant contains a section decorated in Japanese style.There is, a terrace
where guests, can enjoy meals outside. Professionally equipped kitchen allows us to
prepare high quality dishes. Menu can be matched to the individual needs of guests.
• Restaurant may be used by 120 people at once.

WHY SHIVAMOGGA-

• Shimoga District in Karnataka stands 108th in all crime records in 2013. 103rd in
no of murders, 101st in no of rapes, 67th in no of robberies, 200th in no of thefts,
36th in no of dacoities, 160th in no of kidnapings, 44th in no of riots.

• As the city is an entrance for the karavali region where the martial arts have
originated.
• As it is connected to the coastal cities of Karnataka and is also considered for the
smart city project in Karnataka.
• Introducing the martial arts forms of karnataka to other states of Karnataka would
be conserving and spreading the knowledge of these forms of martial arts.
• As Shivamogga is alo very well connected to other cities of Karnataka it will pave a
way of providing other students of other cities to come and learn martial arts.

INTRODUCTION TO CITY:
• Shimoga, officially known as Shivamogga,is a city and the district headquarters of
Shimoga district in the central part of the state of Karnataka, India. The city lies on the
banks of the Tunga River. Being the gateway for the hilly region of the Western Ghats,
the city is popularly nicknamed as "Gateway to Malnad". The population of Shimoga city
is 322,650 as per 2011 census.The city has been selected for the Smart Cities project,
standing in the fourth position in the state and 25th in the country as of November 2020.
• The city is 569 m above sea level and is surrounded by lush green paddy fields, arecanut
and coconut groves. It is located 267 km from the state capital Bangalore and 195 km
from the port city Mangalore.

• The place is renowned for its rich heritage, culture and mesmerizing beauty. Shimoga in
Karnataka is an ideal getaway destination to enjoy nature in its full glory. This region is
also termed as the “gateway to malnad” because it acts as a gateway to the hilly regions
of the western ghats.

TRANSPORTATION:
• Shimoga is well connected by road to major cities like Bangalore, Mangalore, Hubli.
Two major National Highways pass through the City.

• The city has two railway stations, and there are trains that run to and from Bangalore,
Mysore, Tirupati and Chennai.

• Shimoga Airport is under construction in Sogane, 6 km south of Shimoga.[24] The


nearest international airports are Kempegowda International Airport and Mangalore
International Airport.

GEOGRAPHY AND TOPOGRAPHY:

• According to the Shimoga City Municipal Corporation, the city has a total area of about
50 square kilometres (19 sq mi). Most/all these hills are part of the Western Ghats, a
region known for plentiful rainfall and lush greenery and declared during 2012 as a
World Heritage site. Tunga River flows through Shimoga.

CLIMATE:
• The climate is tropical wet and dry (Köppen climate classification) summer average
temperature 20–35 °C (68–95 °F). This means that the winter and the early part of
summer are typically dry periods. The majority of the rainfall occurs between June and
early October. Shimoga is a part of a region known as Malnad (land of hills) in
Karnataka. Yearly, the rainfall aggregates up to 3295mm of precipitation.
• January and February are the driest months, July the wettest, and April is the warmest
month with an average high temperature of 35.5 degrees Celsius (95.9 degrees F).Coldest
months of Shimoga are July, August, November and December with average high
temperature of 27 degrees Celsius (80.6 degrees F). In summer (April–May), temperature
crosses 36 °C at Shimoga.

• Navaraspur was the auditorium of the Adil Shahs, Every year the local administration
organizes the Navaraspur Festival to attract tourists.
• Shri Shiddeshwar Temple situated at the heart of the city is a holy place for Hindus

also a very beautiful tourist place to visit. During Makar Sankranti an annual fare is
organized by Shri Siddheshwar Temple.
