CAPTIONS ON INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, there are several discussions that contained inside, there are
background of research, statement problems, research objectives, and research
significances.

I. Background of Research

Language is a symbol of the speech sound system that is used as a tool to

communicate by people. The functions of language are as a communication tool
and is the most complete and effective way to convey ideas, messages, intentions,
and opinions to others. In its use, language is divided into several parts, they are
official language, colloquial language and slang (Fishman, 1975: 4). The focus in
this study refers to the Slang language. Spolsky (1998: 35) states that Slang
language is the use of informal words and expressions that are not considered
standard in the speaker's language or dialect but are considered acceptable in
certain social settings. Slang expressions may act as euphemisms and may be used
as means of identifying with one's peers. In the use of slang, there is a shortening
or transfer of one or more letters in one word, changes in voice, and meaning in
order to facilitate those from certain groups. Words and phrases in slang may be

new, but they can also be an extension of the meaning of a word (Adolof 2014: 4)
The use of Slang Words is increasingly growing rapidly in the community
because it is considered a typical language of young people. In the modern era, the
use of slang words is more widely used in the realm of social media such as
Twitter, Instagram, and You Tube. On Twitter and Instagram, slang words are
used in caption writing, whereas on You Tube, slang words are usually spoken
and then uploaded in video form or better known as vlogs. On You Tube vlogs the
vloggers focussed on the types of slang words like publicity slang, society slang,
and internet slang that usually used by the vloggers especially teenage vloggers.
But on the social media that focussing on caption like twitter and instagram,
people focussed on the forms, function, and meaning of slang words itself. For
example is LOL is thetype of acronym of slang words which is mean Laugh Out
Loud. People using LOL for expressing something funny in the informal situation.
The previous reading about slang words that researcher first read from
Klymenko (2018) which analyzed “Twitterverse : The Birth of New Words”. This
research aims to identify the forms of slang words that used in Twitter divided
into several main part, they are derivation, compounding, blending, abreviation,
and analogy. Each forms of slang words in twitter established new words on
twitter captions like tweetology (derivation), a buzzing tweet compounding),
(twapplications (blending), RT/ retweet ( abreviation) and twitterbox (analogy).
The second is the research by Anis (2019) which analyzed “Slang Words used in
Instagram caption”. This research aims to identify several types like acronym,
variation, word manufacture, and so on. The caption on Instagram divides into
several types above. Captions on instagram didn’t focused in an account, but the
researcher focused on random account. The function of slang words based on this
research divided into several parts, they are to enrich the language based on new
words, to reduce serious conversation and to ease social intercouse . The third is
the research by Munawaroh (2019) which analyzed “ Slang Language Used by
Teenage Vloggers” . This research aims to identify Teenage vloggers mostly use
three types of slang words, they are publicity slang, society slang, and internet

slang. for examples are gonna, gotta( society slang) LMAO, LOL (internet slang),
and Harley Davidson, Adidas (Publicity Slang).

The differences between previous research above is using only Kim

Kardashian account is the object of research didn’t using instagram account
randomly, The researcher also analyzes slang words using sociolinguistics. First,
the researcher will use Patridge theory which divided twelve types of slang words.
Second, the researcher will use Allan and Burridge theory which devided the
function of slang words into seven functions, and the researcher will use Lyons
theory which divided the meaning of slang words in seven types of meaning as
the sub of functions of slang words.

This research is more focused on slang words on Instagram caption because

Instagram is widely used by people in the world. Based on Kumparan (2017),
there are around 750 million active users of Instagram in the world, as well as a
means of uploading photos and videos online where interesting captions can be
written. One interesting caption on Instagram is the use of slang words.
One of the instagram accounts that uses a lot of slang words is Kim
Kardashian instagram account . Kim Kardashian is a social media influencer,
socialite, model, and businesswoman who comes from the United States. Her
Twitter and Instagram followers have reached hundreds of millions people, so
that she becomes a social media influencer, especially on Instagram. Because of
Kim Kardashian's popularity, people came to know Kardashian's slang which is
mostly found in slang dictionaries such as Urbandictionary. But there is a small
part of Kardashian's iconic slang words, which is a new language created by The
Kardashians, like ‘okurr’ which means okay. therefore, the researcher is interested
in researching Slang Words Used in Kim Kardashian Caption on Instagram
account.

II. Statement of Problems
According to background of research, researcher can make several questions in
resolving the research problems. There are some research questions based on the
analysis :

a. What is the types of Slang Words that used in Kim Kardashian Caption
on Instagram?
b. What is the function of Slang Words that used in Kim Kardashian
Caption on Instagram ?

III : Research Objectives

Based on the research questions above, researcher focusses on the form and
meaning of slang words in Kim Kardashian caption on her Instagram account.
The research is aimed at :

a. To identify the types of slang words in Kim Kardashian Caption on

Instagram.
b. To explain the function of slang words in Kim Kardashian Caption on
Instagram.

IV : Research Significances

The significances of research that divided into two main parts; there are
theoretically and practically (Marshall and Rosman, 2006).

a. Theoretically
The researcher hopes that this research is able to enrich the researcher’s
comprehension about slang words and also to understand what is the
functions of slang words and what is the meaning that contained in slang
words in Kim Kardashian Caption on Instagram.

 b. Practically
This research is important to be observed because nowadays slang words
are used by people around the world, especially in social media as social
language, it can be used to get information about slang words especially
the form of slang words and the meaning of slang words. The research
hopefully has some benefits for all students, especially for English
Department student. From this research, they expected to be able to apply
their knowledge in daily language , especially in making captions in social
media as an informal occation. On the other hand, hopefully this research
can be used by next researchers as a reference material who are interest in
analyzing slang words.

V. Conceptual Framework

In conceptual framework, there are types of slang words and function of slang
words.

a. Slang Words

Slang words are the unity of words that usually used in informal sectors for
informal situation. Spolsky (1998: 35) states that Slang language is the use of
informal words and expressions that are not considered standard in the speaker's
language or dialect but are considered acceptable in certain social settings. Slang
expressions may act as euphemisms and may be used as means of identifying with
one's peers. In the use of slang, there is a shortening or transfer of one or more
letters in one word, changes in voice, and meaning in order to facilitate those from
certain groups. Words and phrases in slang may be new, but they can also be an
extension of the meaning of a word (Adolof 2014: 4).

Based on region, slang words divided into two big parts. There are American
Slang Words and British Slang Words (Patridge, 2004 : 31). American Slang

Words are slang words which particular in United States. American Slang Words
divided into several parts, there are Californian Slang Words, African-American
Slang Words, U.S. Navy Slang Words, and Historical Dictionary of American
Slang Words ( Patridge, 2004 : 34)

b. Types of Slang Words.

According to Patridge (2004 : 203), types of slang words are the kind of
informal language which divided into several parts based on the place where
the slang words used, the history of slang words which are used, and the social
situation which has relation in the using of slang words. Patridge divided
twelve types of slang words, there are :

a. Cockney Slang

Cockney slang is the kind of slang words which originated from End
East of England in 14th century. Cockney slang has pejorative
connotation, originally derived from cokenay or cokeney ( Patridge,
2004 : 206) .In Kim Kardashian’s instagram captions, there are some
captions which contain cockney slang :

- This news make me Adam and Eve. (Believe). And I love it.
- The Simpsons made North bubble bath (Laugh)

b. Internet Slang Words

Internet slang words is the kind of slang words which used by

different people in internet.The characteristic of internet slang are
contains homophones (abreviation and acronyms), heterographs, novel
syntactic features, and has direct request. (Patridge, 2004 : 209). In
Kim Kardashian’s instagram captions, there are some captions which
contain internet slang words :

c. Public-House Slang Words

Public-house slang words and phrases also make up for the smallness
and recorded vocabulary based on the nature of the subject, so people
can’t neglect to use these slang words. Public-house slang words, and
it was originated in 16th century (Patridge, 2004 : 211) . In Kim
Kardashian’s instagram captions, there are some words which contain
Public-House slang words :

-I’m totally Wall Cry (Understand) when North takes her own
choices.

- Knees Up ( Good time) , fellas!

d. Slang Words in Art

Slang in art firstly used in 17th century, when slang words brought in
the Richard Brome’s comedy show titled A Fovial Crew. Furthermore,
art slang words is considerable more difficult to guess than another
types of slang words. Usually, slang words in art adopted by society,
and nowadays slang words in art are well-known as artistic slang
( Patridge, 2004 : 212). In Kim Kardashian’s instagram captions,
there are some captions which contain slang words in art :

e. Slang Words in Publicity
Slang words in publicity usually found in advertisement, especially
modern commerce. Factories need the catchy phrases or rhymes for
promoting their product to public. Publicity slang words firstly used in
late 20th century and early 21st century between marketer and
employee (Patridge, 2004 : 213). In Kim Kardashian’s instagram
captions, there are some captions which contain slang words in
publicity :

- Budweisser ( whats up) Girls?

- Golden Flake Potato Chips ( Good as Gold). Luv that jewelries so
bad.

f. Slang Words in Public School and University

Slang words in school are different with slang words in university.

When students from schools enter to university, they leave their old
slang words. They grow up to adults, and creating their own rules in
their almamater( Patridge: 2004 : 214). In Kim Kardashian’s

informal English (Patridge, 2004 : 217). In Kim Kardashian’s

Society slang words usually used in daily conversation to connect

social relations among people and usually used in society area.The
first society slang words which used by rich people in Britain are :
Rotchchild which is means Rich people, and silver pheasant which is
means beautiful society woman ( Patridge, 2004 : 220). In Kim

j. Soldier Slang Words

Soldier slang words usually used by English spoken Army

communities. Firstly, soldier slang words established by US Navy,
also well known as Naval. The Naval slang words is mostly
acronymy form, and communicates a very wry sense of humor,
towards officer, protocol, and anyone with suspicious attitude
(Patridge, 2004 : 222). There are some Kim Kardashian’s instagram
captions which contain soldier slang words :

k. Trademen Slang Words

Trademen slang words is the type of slang words which usually used
by butchers, tailors, builders, and chemist. Mostly, trademen slang
words have tailor terms. Every region has their trademen slang, for
example are American trademen slang words, Australian trademen
slang words, and British trademen slang words ( Patridge, 2004 : 224).

l. Workmen Slang Words

Workmen slang words has a link with public house slang words and
trademen slang words. But, one of the characteristic of workmen slang
words is the user of workmen slang words don’t mention the real
meaning about something, but the workmen slang words can be
understand with the employees only in certain area ( Patridge, 2004 :
228). In Kim Kardashian’s instagram captions, there are some
captions which contain workmen slang words :

c. Function of Slang Words

According to Allan and and Burridge (2006 : 69), there are seven function
of slang words : to address, to show intimacy, to initiate relax conversation, to
express impression, to form intimate atmosphere, showing self-identity, and
achieving meaning.

a. To Address
First function of slang words is to address. It means that the speaker
uses slang words to address another speaker in order to close the

 relationship between the speaker to adressee in informal situation
( Allan, 2006 : 79 ; Burridge, 2006 : 79) . In Kim Kardashian’s
instagram captions, there are some slang words which has
‘addressing’ function :

-Gurls (Girls), you guys growing so easily. North trying to teach Chi.
So adorable.
In this caption, gurl is used to address to daughter or friends among
girls. But in this caption, gurls refers to two daughters of Kim
Kardashian, North West and Chicago West.

-Darl (Darling), how beautiful you are. You’re my everyday mood.

In this caption, darl is used to address to someone who loved. But in
this caption, darl refers to Chicago West, her little daughter.

b. To Show Intimacy
The second function is to show intimacy. It means that slang words
used in informal situation, so slang words usually used among friends
to involving warm relationship and intimacy. Slang words has the
function to show intimacy and showing close among peers (Allan,
2006 : 81; Burridge, 2006 : 81). In Kim Kardashian’s instagram
captions, there are some captions which have ‘to show intimacy’
function :

Usually, babies is the slang words which is means close friends or best
friends in American culture. But, in this context Kim Kardashian uses
‘babies’ word to explain that she has very close relationship with her
sibling, Khloe Kardashian, and her nieces, Kendall Jenner, and Kylie
Jenner.

In American culture, bestie refers to best friend or someone who takes

the difficulties and help someone else to carry the difficulties. In this
context, the word ‘bestie’ refers to the close relationship between
Penelope and North as cousin. Kim Kardashian shows intimacy
between herself, North, and Penelope as relatives with the slang word
‘bestie’ which used in her instagram caption.

c. To Initiate Relax Situation

The third function is to initiate relax situation. It means that slang
words as informal language can be used to make the situation more
relax and not formal anymore. People use slang words in purpose to
relax in formal situation. Someone who has close relationship with
other tends to use certain vocabulary to make the situation run more
relaxed, so people who involved are more comfortable (Allan, 2006 :
84 ; Burridge, 2006 : 84). In Kim Kardashian’s instagram captions
there are some captions which have ‘initiating relax situation’
function :

In this caption, Kim Kardashian was in the formal situation when her
niece, Kylie Jenner release her cosmetics product called Kylie

Kardashian wrote captions on her photo with Kylie, so the word ‘yeah
(right)’ has ‘initiate relax situation’ because this word used in
instagram caption.

In this caption, Kim Kardashian used this caption when she releases
her charity boxing called Look to the Stars on 12th September 2019 to
help children who have cancer. This release was a formal situation,
but on her instagram caption, she wrote informal language because it’s
on social media.

d. To Expess Impression
The fourth function of slang words is ‘to express impression’. It means
that slang words can be used to express feelings, idea, and opinion
about something or someone. Slang words as media to delivering
thoughts for people in society to express what they say and what they
want among society ( Allan, 2006 : 87; Burridge, 2006 : 87). In Kim
Kardashian’s instagram account, there are some captions which
contain ‘to express impression’ function :

-Every time I getting older, I look better and getting smarter. It lit
(Brighter) me up.

Kim Kardashian wrote this caption when she celebrates her 39th
birthday party on October 21st 2019. She expressing that in her 39th
birthday, she’s so proud at herself and her achievement as an
entrepeneur and social media influencer. It prooved with the word ‘Lit’
which is means brighter, as her life and her carrier.

Kim Kardashian wrote this caption when she spend her time with her
family, the Kardashian on summer holiday on 2019. She used slang
words ‘YOLO’ or the abreviation of You Only Life Once which refers
to her feeling that she was so happy and that moment was so
memporable for her and her family.

e. To Form Intimate Atmosphere

The fifth function of slang words is to form intimate atmosphere. It
means that slang words used for making close and intimate situation,
especially among friends and family. Slang words are the words which
connecting relation among people to more intimate each other ( Allan,
2006 : 90 ; Burridge, 2006 : 90). In Kim Kardashian’s instagram
account, there are some captions which contains ‘forming intimate
atmosphere’ function :

Kim Kardashian wrote this caption in International Women’s Day

Dealbook Talkshow on March, 8th 2018. She used slang word Gal
which is means girls to form intimate atmosphere to women all around
the world. Kim Kardashian as a woman public figure use slang word
‘Gal’ to show that she has close relationship with the women all
around the world.

- Hey Bros (Brothers)! Enjoy this Kanye albums. Rock your body and
get the vibes immediately!

 Kim Kardashian wrote this caption when Kanye West, her husband
release his album on 2016. She used slang word ‘Bros’ which is
means brothers to form intimate atmosphere to all music listeners,
especially hip-hop music listeners. Kim Kardashian as wife of Kanye
West use slang word ‘ Bros’ to show that between Kim Kardashian,
Kanye West, and all of music listeners has close relationship.

-Hello good vibes!( general feeling of someone or something).

Appreciating another cultures drive you more high class. Stop stealing
other cultures and their ideas.

Kim Kardashian wrote this caption after have an interview at Sunday

Service Vibe TV show on 2018. She used the slang word ‘vibes’ to
form intimate atmosphere between her and people all around the
world to appreciating another cultures as the characteristic of their
region. She invites people all around the world to not to steal other
cultures and ideas.

f. Showing Self-Identity
The sixth function of slang words is showing self-identity. It means
that every society has different characteristic of language, especially in
words, include characteristic of slang words. Between one society and
another society has different characteristics of slang words, depend on
culture and social background. For example is the celebrity slang
words is different with medicine slang words. Slang words is informal
words which distinguish one society to another. So, among societies
have self-identity ( Allan, 2006 : 91 ; Burridge, 2006 : 91). In Kim
Kardashian’s instagram account, there are some captions which
contains ‘showing self identity’ function :

In this caption, slang words ‘Okurr’ is one of the iconic slang words
of The Kardashians or Kim Kardashian’s family. Okurr means okay or
alright. Kardashian family as the big social influencer in the world,
show their identity with iconic word like ‘okurr’, and so on.
Furthermore, this word used by Kardi B, American rapper when she
was in The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

-KKW beauty will be the wavy ( something that becomes a headline

news) in America!

In this caption, wave or wavy is the identity of Max B, an American

rapper which released his mixtape titled ‘Wavy Good’. In this
mixtape, wavy means possitive news which made creative energy.
Furthermore, in 2016, the word wave adapted by Kanye West (Kim
Kardashian’s husband) on his album titled ‘Life of Pablo’, and it’s
becomes a headline news or trending in twitter at that time. Next, the
word ‘wave/ wavy’ used by Kim Kardashian when she released KKW
beauty on 2020. So, based on Kardashian’s family, wavy means
something that becomes a headline news or trending).

g. Achieving Meaning

The seventh function of slang words is acheving meaning. Meaning is

an idea or concept that can be transferred from the thoughts of
speakers to the thoughts of the speech partners, and manifest it into
the form of a language or other language. Therefore, learning
languages in essence also learn how each language user in a
community can understand each other (Allan, 2006: 103; Burridge,

 2006 : 103). In Kim Kardashian’s instagram account, there are some
captions which have ‘achieving meaning’ function “

- This swags (jewelries) are beautiful. Right?

Kim Kardashian used this caption on September 24th 2018 when she
invited in Getting Glam release. She used this caption for achieving
reflective meaning. Because swags is the collocation of jewelries.

-Lets March! #BMW

Kim Kardashian used this caption on July 20th 2019 when she took a
troll by driving her car. She used this caption for achieving collocative
meaning, because she highlighted BMW with hashtag. BMW refers to
fancy car which has expensive prices.

VI. Research Method

This part include research design, sample of data, source of data, technique of
collecting data, and technique of analyzing data.

a. Research Design

To doing this research, the researcher using qualitative method, because

the research focusses on the describing, clarifying, and understanding the object
without mathematical calculation. According to Cresswell (2010 : 41) qualitaive
method is an inquiry process of understanding based on distinct methodological
traditions of inquiry that explore a social or human problem. The researcher builds
a complex, holistic picture, analizes word, report detailed views of information,
and conducts the study in a natural setting. Based on research questions,
qualitative method is suitable for analyzing the types and the functions of slang
words in Kim Kardashian instagram caption on her instagram account. It’s include

qualitative descriptive method because the researcher describes the data of
research. The purpose of qualitative descriptive method is to describe, to
generalize, and to relating the data.

In doing research, the researcher using document analysis as the type of

qualitative method. Document analysis is a form of qualitative research in which
documents are interpreted by the researcher to give voice and meaning around an
assessment topic (Bowen, 2009 : 28). Analyzing documents incorporates coding
content into themes similar to how focus group or interview transcripts are
analyzed (Bowen, 2009 : 28). The document analysis is appropriate to analysis
this research because of document analysis producing the object like event,
phenomenon, program, and organization [CITATION Bow09 \p 29 \t \l 1057 ] . The
researcher using the photo captions in Kim Kardashian’s instagram account.
According to O’ Leary (2014 : 80), social media posts include personal
documents that can be analyzed in scientific research.

b. Source of Data.

In order to analyze slang words used in Kim Kardashian caption on

Instagram account, so the researcher used Kim Kardashian West official
instagram account which accessed on April 28th 2020 with the link :

The data would be analyzed are types and functions of slang words in Kim
Kardashian instagram account. The samples of data are the captions like :

In the first data, the type of slang word ‘Vibes’ is society slang words,
because the word ‘vibes’ used to connect social relation among people
and usually used in society. The word ‘vibes’ becomes society slang word
because American youth used this word to express general feeling to
someone or something. This word originally in 1967 as an abreviation of
the word ‘vibration’. The word has connotative meaning which is means
general feeling of someone or something ( Montiello, 2008 : 53). Kim
Kardashian used the word ‘vibes’ in the caption on her instagram account
is to form intimate atmosphere. It means she used the word ‘vibes’ to
connecting and inviting people all around the world to apreciating another
culture, and don’t steal other cultures and ideas.

Data 2 : KKW Beauty will be the wavy in America.

In the second data, the type of slang word ‘Wavy’ is society slang words,
because the word ‘wavy’ used to connect social relation among people and

because the rapper Max B released mixtapes (songs album) titled ‘Wavy
Good’. It refers to a possitive news which made creative energy for people

North.I love you.

In the third data, the type of slang word ‘Bestie’ is society slang words,
because the word ‘bestie’ used to connect social relation among people
and usually used in society. The word ‘bestie’ becomes society slang word
because this word used by American celebrities. Based on American
celebrities, besties means people or person who take care of another
people’s problem, make her/his/their problems as he/she/their problems,
and giving meaningful memories. On the other head, based on Indian
culture, besties means brother or sister from another mother, and someone
who becomes a relatives, but not by heredity. (Montiello,2008 : 34). Kim
Kardashian used the word ‘ bestie’ in the caption on her instagram account
is to show intimacy between herself, North West, and Penelope as a
relatives. Penelope is North’s cousin, and the relation between North and
Penelope are so close each other. So, she used the slang word ‘bestie’on
her instagram caption to show that Kim Kardashian has close relationship
with her niece.

 Data 4 : Spend it all guys, YOLO.

In the last data, the type of slang words ‘YOLO’ (You Only Life Once) is
internet slang words, because this word has abreviation forms as the
characteristic of internet slang word. Usually, internet slang used in the
online and video games, chatrooms, social networking services, social
media captions and online community (Patridge, 2004 : 208). The
characteristics of internet slang are contains homophones (abreviation and
acronyms), heterographs, novel syntactic features, and has direct request.
(Patridge, 2004 : 209). Kim Kardashian used slang word ‘ YOLO’ to
express impression, or to express her feeling that she was so happy when
she had summer holiday with her family on 2019.

d. Technique of Collecting Data

As described in the research design, for collecting the data the researcher
uses some methods. There are browsing, examining documents, finding, and
moving ( Scott, 1990 : 28).

1. Browsing
Here is the first step of collecting the data. The researcher browse
to the internet and search Kim Kardashian’s instagram account to find
the data of research, search the meaning on Urbandictionary (internet
slang words dictionary), and find the e journals which related with the
research questions.

2. Examining Documents
The second step is examining documents or choose the captions in
Kim Kardashian’s photo which one contains slang words that have
possitive meanings based on Urbandictionary and the aspects which
related with social culture.

 3. Finding
The third step is finding. It means that the researcher lists the slang
words in Kim Kardashian’s caption on her instagram account. The
researcher find types of slang words and the functions of slang words
based on sociolinguistics aspect.

4. Moving
Finally move the data which identified in the research.

e. Technique of Analyzing Data

Next step is technique of analyzing data. In document analysis, some

techniques of analyzing data which used in the research are :

1. Identifying which is slang words in Kim Kardashian instagram

caption.
2. Classifying the data based on the types of slang words.
3. Analyzing the function of slang words based on sociolinguistics
aspects.
4. Searching the lexical and slang meaning based on the internet slang
words dictionary and social culture.
5. The final result of entire research about slang words.
