READING CULTURE AS A PROBLEM IN DEVELOPING LITERARY

TRANSLATION

Literary Translation is one of interdiscipline in literature that discuss about how to

transferring a literary works meaning from the source language to the target language with so
many different such us culture, ideology, language, grammar, etc. in case of it every languages in
the world has their own different with one of them. So in this short essay I will bring you to the
development of literary translation in Indonesia.

We have known that literary translation is a bridge to know the literary works in other
country or other languages. It makes people around the world get known the thought, culture,
languages, etc without come to their countries and with this bridge we can increases our quality
of life with many aspects that we found in the foreign literary works. In case of it the
development of literary translation in our country Indonesia is very low. There are so many
problem like education and our concern to international language, lack of awareness that this
literary translation is one of good ways to develop our country will be the main problems. In fact
our writers in literary works is very good when they write their works according to their culture
as an Indonesian writers. The quality of writers in our country can be competed with other
countries such us Sapardi Joko Darmono, Andrea Hinata, Goenawan Mohammad etc. so the
question is why our development in Literary translation is not good as other countries.

In my opinion the lack of awareness by the government become the main problems and
sometimes the community also cannot appreciate the literary works as good as other countries.
This is happen because our education program is not really good that makes the community is
still lack of how important reading culture is. The fact of our government cannot appreciate a
good writer makes Sapardi Joko Darmono, Goenawan Mohammad, etc create a foundation
known as Lontar Foundation. This foundation is an independent organization and the core
activity of this foundation is to publish Indonesian literary works. This foundation was made
with a purpose to stimulate further development of Indonesian literature, to make Indonesian
literature accessable to an international audiences, and to preserve for future generation’s of
Indonesia literature.

The Lontar Foundation has create a bridge that makes Indonesian writers can have an
international audiences and makes our country is known by the other countries. This foundation
also have been successfully create a future generation of Indonesian writers such us Andera
Hinata with his work titled Laskar Pelangi, Dee Lestari with his work titled Perahu Kertas and
many more. These writers has their own qualities to create a literary works and contributed to the
development of literary translation in Indonesia because their works has been translated to other
languages because their successful and their works.

This achievement must be continued by the next generation of Indonesian literature

because if we don’t maintain the quality of our literature we will always in the bottom of other
countries especially in the lack of our literacy concern. For me this achievement is the gate of our
successful in increasing our knowledge, our thought, and our country to compete with other
countries in terms of education. The government roles also will be the main strength to our next
generations of writers if the government still lake of appreciation to the Indonesian writers, our
development of literary translation is useless. And the great writers of Indonesia will be wasting
their time to create other great works. Also our roles as an agent of change have to increases the
community awareness about how important reading culture is, because with it we can compete
with other countries in term of the development literary translation in Indonesia.
