    Butch Dalisay’s Building a National

    Butch Dalisay attended the 2010 Taboan. Taboan will be touring the regions from year
    to year. The Arts of Council is incharged of the Taboan. Before the festival is about to start, Dr.
    Resil Mojares offered a speech. Mojares was a internationally recognized scholar of Philippine
    literature, history and the society. His speech is about “Will Magdalena Jalandoni Ever Be a
    National Artist?” This topic is not to offend Magdalena Jalandoni but this case is to draw
    attention from the public in the gross disadvantage of Filipino writers working in their language
    than English and Filipino lie, particularly when it comes to nationalor international level.
    Jalandoni is one of the Filipino writer who is affected of this. Philippine literature in native
    dialects has achieved much, yet it is still obscure elsewhere. During the selection of the NA,
    Mojares said that, “In the discussion of the nominees of Jalandoni last year, all of the 10 or 12
    members of the ‘Council of Elders’ (except perhaps for one or two) had not read Jalandoni’s
    works, either due to language, unavailability of texts or translations, or simply because
    Jalandoni did not fall within the area of expertise.” Jalandoni failed to be chosen three to four
    times. Though, there is a marginalization of writing from the regions, it has been a long-
    festering sore in the body of Philippine literature. They asked, “What can the region do for
    themselves?” In the last part of his speech he said that , “The greater challenge lies outside the
    awards. We need to address inequalities in conditions of literary and cultural production by
    investing more heavily (by the regionjs themselves and not just Manila) in more effective and
    strategic initiatives in scholarship, literary education, translation, publishing, dissemination, and
    promotion. We need to build the national in the National [Artist] Awards.” Dalisay gave an
    opinion that is whenever we begin to recognize and acknowledge the Filipino writers, we must
    have a critical groundwork and must have first the development and support for translators and
    critics that gives fair and just judges.
