Alkyne – Propene

Propene is the second member of the alkene

group and comprises three carbon and six hydrogen

molecules. Its structural formula is CH2=CHCH3. At

room temperature, propene is colorless, tasteless, and

has a mild faint smell (Campo, et al., 2020). It is

highly flammable and also explosive, making it the

right combustible fuel. With regards to solubility,

propene has low solubility in water but could dissolve very well in hydrocarbons.

It is primarily extracted by steam cracking of large hydrocarbons; it can also be

synthesized by dehydrogenation and ethanol oxidation. Maximum yield is attained at a

temperature of about 75% at 200oC. Propene can be found naturally and can also be synthesized

in the laboratory. According to Blay et al. (2017), it is the second most important fuel in the

petrochemical industry and a precursor for several other petrochemical products.
