Experiment Name:-
To obtain the efficiency of a centrifugal pump under varying speed.

Introduction
Centrifugal Pumps are more commonly used across industries for transfer of fluids. Its
study is important because of all Industrial Pumps that are used to pump fluids,
Centrifugal Pumps are the most popularly used due to their Smooth flow rate, Range
of capacity, Design simplicity and Ease of maintenance and operations. Centrifugal
pumps play an important role in operations in various industries such as Oil and
Mining, Chemical, Food etc.

The fact that centrifugal pump is most popular choice of fluid movement makes them
a strong contender for many applications such as Waste management, Agriculture,
Manufacturing, Oil & Energy.

siphon away animal waste and for other agricultural purposes. (Taken from web
practical application of centrifugal pump).

Our main objective in this experiment is to calculate efficiency of a centrifugal pump

as a function of flow rate for pump speed of 1500 rpm,2000 rpm and 2500rpm.

In the pump industry, much of the work involves two extremely simple, yet efficient,
machines—the centrifugal pump and the AC induction motor. The centrifugal pump
converts mechanical energy into hydraulic energy (flow, velocity and pressure), and
the AC motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. Many medium and
larger centrifugal pumps offer efficiency of 75 to 93 percent and even the smaller
ones usually fall into the 50 to 70 percent range. Greater the efficiency of pump,
more capable of water transportation.
The overall efficiency of a centrifugal pump is simply the ratio of the water (output)
power to the shaft (input) power and is illustrated by the equation below: -
Efficiency= water power/input power*100

Practical application of obtainable result of this experiment: -

Centrifugal pumps are known for high efficiency with low power consumption. By
calculating efficiency, we ca get all the useful information about the pump and get the
best thing for us. This combination is crucial in a commercial building, for example, where
many centrifugal pumps may be used. Because of their simple design, they are known
for durability and low maintenance.

Centrifugal pumps are used in buildings for pumping the general water supply, as a
booster and for domestic water supplies. The design of a centrifugal pump makes them useful for
pumping sewage and slurries. They are also used in fire protection systems and for heating and
cooling applications. In addition, they are popular in the beverage, dairy, food and light chemical
industries. (Taken from Knapp R.T 1937)

These are the top centrifugal pumps manufacturer across the world which gives high
efficiency ad consumes low power. These are Grundfos, Flowserve corporation, ITT Inc., KSB
group, Ebara, Sulzer etc.

Conclusions :-
After completing this report, we conclude that the experiment is a success, with all the objective set
is achieve. The conclusion that we made that with a increase of speed of the pump it will cause the
properties and characteristics to varied accordingly which in turn effect the overall efficiency, and
with the increase of speed it relevant that the efficiency also increased.
Learning point in this experiment for me is the performance of a centrifugal pump can be shown
graphically on a charecteristics curve. One can get the best.
