Old Master Drawing

Artist- Michelangelo

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, known famously as Michelangelo, was an Italian

sculptor who painted and worked in the architectural area while being a poet of the High
Renaissance Era. He was born on March 6, 1475 in the Republic of Florence and was major
influence in his time and in Western art later in history. Michelangelo died February 18, 1564 in
Rome.
The old master drawing of focus came from Michelangelo’s study on the human right arm done
in 1511. A male nude figure is drawn with one arm detached being Michelangelo’s intention to
draw the attention of the viewer to his reason behind drawing it. I chose this piece to recreate
because in carrying out a research on the artist, I found most of his art gravitating towards the
muscular anatomy. As a result I realized that he was knowledgeable in showcasing the muscle in
each subject and with my recent course topic, Muscle Anatomy and the creation of a Muscle
portfolio, I found it fitting to illustrate one of his old master drawing. Below two separate
drawings were done to highlight the process.
