Read and reflect on the case

Google’s Steep Learning Curve in China. Answer the

questions at the end of the article.

1. Can Google afford not to do business in China?

In my opinion, yes. Google can afford not to do business in China because there
are instances that China tried to hack Google’s data and information to steal user’s
information. As well as, hindering google from adding information about China’s political
past. But of course it will have a great impact for them since china is one of the biggest
country in the world, and also one of the fastest and most competitive country here in
Asia. Losing an opportunity to operate in China can reduce a lot of profit for them. But in
the end China is a single country which they will lose, and Google still holds their tittle
as the most used search engines across the globe and I am sure they will be able to
sustain their tittle even if they loss China. They may still expand on other countries in
the world, and maintain their reputation in protecting their user’s information.

2. Which stakeholders would be affected by Google’s managers’ possible decision to

shut down its China operations? How would they be affected? What trade-offs would
Google be making?

Stakeholders that would be likely affected in Google’s site in China are the
investors, contractors, employees and shareholders. Lots of profits will be lost from
the investors and shareholders that invest in the company, not much of a return in
their investment would happen. The contractors would have a limited activities
because of the shutdown and the employees hired by the company will lose their
jobs.

3. Should Google’s managers be surprised by the China predicament?

Yes, Google’s managers should be surprised because the censorship of some

parts of the internet in China was not expected by them. At first they weren’t planned to
expand and China that is why they were not prepared with the conditions about the
censorship. It was also mentioned that they were cyberattacked or hacked to gather
some information from the Chinese activist which resulted in the force shutting down of
Google.cn.
