SEVERAL UNUSUAL ASPECTS OF RIGA MINT PERFORMANCE
DURING THE REIGN OF QUEEN KRISTINA
Summary
In his article the author discloses several aspects of Riga's city and state
(Livonian) mints' activities through two unusual solidus coins: Riga
solidus of 1641 with an absolutely atypical sign – «rosette» legend
separator and an atypical Riga solidus of 1646.
In the first case the author, employing punch analysis method, discovered
similar element on the coins of Erfurt mint struck in 1633–1634 bearing the marks
of mintmaster Johann Schneider, and on ducats coins of Riga's state mint struck in
1644–1648. Based on this data, the author assumes that in 1640 masters from Erfurt
start working in Riga's city mint, and, with the establishment of state mint in Riga
in 1644, these masters (or some of their equipment) began to participate in minting
ducats in the state mint.
In the second case, with the atypical solidus 1646, the author shows that in the
beginning of 1646 small scale minting of solidus coins was conducted in Riga's state
mint, despite the decree of temporary shutdown of the mint. And, While Livonian
solidus of 1646 are unknown (probably, they did not exist since their minting would
be too provocative), the atypical Riga solidus of 1646 did exist, albeit it was rare
(which means a short period of minting). Considering the above, the author shows
that in 1646 Marsilius Philipson was likely to continue minting of solidus coins,
bearing Riga's coat of arms (atypical), in the state mint, violating the monetary right
and despite the official shutdown of the mint. One question remains unanswered –
were the «atypical solidus of Riga» considered as the production of the state mint by
the administration of Swedish Livonia or were they Marsilius Philipson's personal
initiative?
