from the Archaeological Excavations
of the Sanctuary near the Pass Gurzufskoe
Sedlo in the Crimean Mountains

The study focuses on the analysis of 35 Roman Republican and


Provincial silver coins1 found during archaeological excavations of
the sanctuary near the pass Gurzufskoe Sedlo at 1981–1993.
Sanctuary near the pass Gurzufskoe Sedlo was opened
in 1981 on the Main ridge of the Crimean Mountains (fig.
1, 2) on the height of 1434 m above sea level, while laying
of the pipeline Yalta-Alushta route2. The excavations were
carried out by archaeological expedition of Yalta Histori-
cal-Literary Museum under the guidance of
N.G. Novičen­kova and V.I. Novičenkov. Several cultural
layers of sanctuary of antique period dated from 4th–3rd
century BC to first half of 2nd century AD3 consisted the
mass gathering of jaws of large and small cattle. There were
found jewelry, household items of Hellenistic/Late Repub-

glass vessels5, pottery and coins of the Mediterranean and

Julius Caesar 48–47 BC, military mint moving with Cae-
sar (pl. 2, 14)27; а denarius of one of the commanders of
Gneus Pompeus – of Q. Caecilius Metellus Pius Scipio,
Imperator, 47–46 BC (pl. 2, 15)28, а denarius of T. Carisius
of 46 BC (pl. 2, 16)29, a denarius of L. Valerius Asisculus of
45 BC (pl. 2, 17)30; one denarius is undetermined of 44–
43 (?) BC (pl. 2, 18)31.
Twelve Roman coins are of period of Second Triumvi-
rate of Octavianus and Marcus Antonius and Final War of
the Roman republic. There are two denarii of Rome mint
of 42, 40 BC: a denarius of P. Clodius M. f. Turrinus of
42 BC (pl. 2, 21)32, a denarius of Q. Voconius Vitulus of
40 BC (pl. 2, 22)33, dedicated to the divine Caesar. Five
cistophoric tetradrachmae are of reign of Marcus Antonius
in Asia Minor of 39 BC (pl. 3, 23–26) of Ephesos mint. Five
denarii are of 36–29 BC of Rome mint: a denarius of Oc-
tavianus of 36 BC (pl. 3, 27)34, a legionary denarius of
M. Antonius of 32–31 BC (pl. 3, 28)3536, three denarii of
Octavianus of 32–29 BC (pl. 3, 29-31)37.
Three denarii of Octavianus (Augustus) are of 29–
27 BC (pl. 3, 32–34)38.

coins were revealed at the new ritual complex of sanctuary

ed at 30th BC – a last quarter of 1st century BC, had its

gether on the bottom of sacrificial pit, and denarii of L. Ti-
turius L. f. Sabinus of 89 BC, Q. Antonius Balbus of 83–
82 BC, cistophoroe of Pergamum of 85–76 BC of Roman
Province of Asia, denarii of Q. Caecilius Metellus Pius Sci-
pio of 47–46 BC and L. Valerius Asisculus of 45 BC, two

narius of Octavianus (Augustus) of 29–27 BC). Sacrificial
