A Comparative Analysis of Colonialism Found in

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Movie and Things Fall Apart Novel

INTRODUCTION
I. Research Background
It has been generally known that literary works often deals with questions about
language materials such as texts, or conversation, or even literature study or research.
There is widespread uncertainty about how to analyze such language materials. Saying
more detailed things about language requires abstract properties of human language in the
analysis of what people say or write in the form of literary works. In terms of the language
itself, this proposal purposed to compare and analyze literature works in the form movie
and novel.

The movie of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory discussed the most controversial issue
in society. It is the social gap between proletariats or poor people and bourgeoisie or rich
people. The term is proposed by Karl Marx. It happens to colonialism which generates the
different classes in society.. The relationship between upper class and lower class has never
become a direct relationship because they just can be related to each other by-products. In
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the society has the same interest in one product which is
chocolate. Wily Wonka as the owner of the factory is flamboyant, stubborn, arrogant, and
authoritarian. He loves to be the center of attention by putting on outrageous attire. He
cannot stand questions and considers them as criticisms or threat. He always brags the
products he creates to his guests. Lastly, he always wants to take control of every situation,
including taking control of his successor [ CITATION Pra17 \l 1033 ]. In this research,
Willy Wonka himself is considered as the representation of Colonialism while Charlie is
the representation of poor people. It is believed that within the economic model of
capitalism, Wonka’s chocolate remains as the hierarchical apex of the commodity within
the factory and the power dynamic between Wonka and the Oompa-Loompas as one
identified as the colonizer and the colonized.
The novel Things Fall Apart first published in 1985 and is written by the late Chinua
Achebe who was a Nigerian author. The setting of the novel is in the outskirts of Nigeria in
a small fictional village, Umuofia just before the arrival of white missionaries into their
land. Due to the unexpected arrival of white missionaries in Umuofia, the villagers do not
know how to react to the sudden cultural changes that the missionaries threaten to change
with their new political structure and institutions. Towards the end of the nineteenth
century most European states migrated to Africa and other parts of the world where they
established colonies. Nigeria was amongst other African nations that received visitors who
were on a colonising mission; introducing their religion and culture that is later imposed on
Igbo. The culture of the people of Umuofia (Igbo culture) is immensely threatened by this
change. [ CITATION Ken13 \l 1033 ]

Regarding the explanation above, the writer is intended to analyze colonialism aspects
in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie and Things Fall Apart Novel. In the movie of
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Willy Wonka was not explicitly shown as the
representation of Colonialism but it could be seen through his characterization and the
settings. While in the novel of Things Fall Apart, it is shown and stated directly throughout
the novel. Hence, this proposal purposed to analyze Igbo society as it appears in the novel,
which is before and after the arrival of white missionaries in Umuofia; the effects of their
arrival concerning Igbo culture, consequently leading to the clash of cultures between the
two parties.

LITERATURE REVIEW

It is important to define colonialism before discussing in detail its practices.

Horvath in [ CITATION Put20 \l 1033 ] stated colonialism was a form of domination, or the
control by individuals or groups over the territory and/or behavior of other individuals or
groups. Colonialism refers to group domination, and the two basic types of group are
intergroup and intragroup domination. The domination process in a culturally heterogenous
society is called intergroup domination, while intragroup domination refers to the
domination process in a culturally homogenous society. The example can be seen from
intergroup and intragroup domination in Britain. The domination of the Welsh, Irish, and
Scots by the English was an example of intergroup domination where a single authority
exerted power over a culturally heterogeneous group of people. The existence of a
hierarchical arrangement of power, wealth, and status among groups within English society
is an example of intragroup domination.

It is important that the differences between colonialism and imperialism is

understood as people often use the terms interchangeably. They are, in fact, two different
words and have a slight difference in meaning. Both terms convey the concept of economic
and political domination and oppression of the colonized/the other. However, the key
difference between colonialism and imperialism is the presence or absence of significant
numbers of permanent settlers in the colony from the colonizing power. Latin America,
North America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the Asian part of the Soviet
Union dominated by European authority were examples of colonization because permanent
settlers moved from the European country to the colonies. In contrast, places dominated by
the colonizing power but not settled by people from the colonizing country were
imperialized. Most of Africa and Asia are examples of imperialism. [ CITATION Put20 \l 1033
]
In terms of comparative study, Comparative literature is an interdisciplinary field
whose practitioners study literature across national borders, across time periods, across
languages, across genres, across boundaries between literature and the other arts (music,
painting, dance, film, etc.), across disciplines (literature and psychology, philosophy,
science, history, architecture, sociology, politics, etc). Defined most broadly, comparative
literature is the study of literature without borders. Scholarship in Comparative Literature
include, for example, studying literacy and social status in the Americas, studying medieval
epic and romance, studying the links of literature to folklore and mythology, studying
colonial and postcolonial writings in different parts of the world, asking fundamental
questions about definitions of literature itself. What scholars in Comparative Literature
share is a desire to study literature beyond national boundaries and an interest in languages
so that they can read foreign texts in their original form . Many comparatists also share the
desire to integrate literary experience with other cultural phenomena such as historical
change, philosophical concepts, and social movements [ CITATION Roh14 \l 1033 ]

. RESEARCH METHOD

This research uses descriptive qualitative as the type of research. Qualitative

research means to explore and understand the meaning of individuals or groups ascribe to
social or human problem. This type of research is used to explore data. Hence, the
researcher can get the interpretation and meaning as the result of the research (Bogdan &
Biklen, 1982). The data of this research are the words, sentences, utterances found in both
of the novel and the movie that assists the researcher to answer the research question.
While the source data is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie and Things Fall Apart
Novel.

 Technique of Collecting Data

1. Reading for several times novel of Things Fall Apart in order to gain deep
understanding toward the content.

2. Watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie to understand deeply about the
movie.
3. Select documents and related literature review that will best help the researcher
understand the problem and the research question.

4. Identifying the data found in the novel and movie by classifying the data based on
related literature review and research question.

 Technique of Analyzing Data

1. Identifying data

In this step, the researcher will identify data (words, phrases, sentences, pictures, and
utterances) which are considered to be relevant with the research problems.

2. Categorizing data

After identifying data, the second step is categorizing data based on the research questions.

3. Describing and interpreting data

In this case, the research will describe then interpret data based on relevant theories and
related previous studies toward the research question.

4. Drawing conclusion

The last step is drawing conclusion. In this step, concluding the research finding and
discussion is needed in order to restate the main arguments based on the findings of this
research
