REQUIRED TEXT & MATERIALS:

College 101 Activity Packet: Available through the EvCC Bookstore

Online Textbook: We will be using a free online textbook for this course. I will tell you about this the first
day! You will be expected to download and read the chapters, so please make sure you have consistent
access to a computer either on or off campus, or both. You may print from the campus computer labs or
library if you wish to have a hard copy.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Develop, understand, and apply college success strategies to include college resources and student
services, rights and responsibilities, financing college, organization, time management, appreciating
diversity, learning strategies, choosing a college major, achieving college goals and preparation for the
completion of an academic plan.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Examine and articulate the student’s reasons for attending college, articulate the difference
between success strategies in college versus high school, work, etc. and apply these new strategies
2. Successfully navigate campus resources, services, and technology
3. Demonstrate an understanding of college terminology and describe the different types of college
programs available at EvCC
4. Demonstrate successful academic behaviors, apply effective learning strategies; and interpret
student rights and responsibilities
5. Identify strategies for financing college
6. Describe the process and pathways to select a college major and find additional sources for
career guidance
7. Demonstrate the ability to create and revise an up-to-date academic plan in preparation to meet
with an academic advisor
8. Define and discuss the importance of diversity and civility in today’s classroom and community
9. Navigate and use the college web page including the student kiosk to locate and utilize important
information

CLASS STRUCTURE:

This is not a lecture based course. You will be responsible for coming to class ready to discuss and
interact with the material, your classmates, and your instructor.

Class time will include discussion of the text and supplementary materials, and will involve group and
individual participation in all activities. Techniques of instruction may include mini-lectures, discussion, class
activities, group work, collaborative learning, videos, and guest speakers. Students are expected to stay
up to date with weekly readings and assignments. Again, this is not a lecture based course; your
involvement and interaction is critical to your success and your enjoyment in this class!

CLASS EXPECTATIONS:

1. Attend class regularly and participate in all activities, class discussions, & assignments
2. Come to class prepared having read and completed all assignments on time
3. Come to class motivated to participate and learn - HAVE A POSITIVE ATTITUDE 
4. Turn off all electronics while in class
5. Notify the instructor with any questions or concerns in a timely manner
6. Plagiarism is strictly prohibited and carries academic consequences

EVALUATIONS & GRADING:

All assignments are due promptly on their scheduled due dates. Late work is frowned upon, and will be
graded down significantly unless you have received prior approval. It is your responsibility to contact me
in advance if there is a problem, or for any missing information you may need to meet your obligations. If
you miss class for any reason, it is your responsibility to contact another student for notes and any missed
information or handouts. Attendance and participation is of the utmost importance.

GRADING SCALE:

Letter grades will be assigned based on the following scale:

A 92 and above B+ 87 to 89.99 C+ 77 to 79.99 D+ 67 to 69.99


A- 90 to 91.99 B 82 to 86.99 C 72 to 76.99 D 62 to 66.99
B- 80 to 81.99 C- 70 to 71.99 F <62
Points will be awarded for each assignment. Please stay on top of how you’re doing by checking the
Canvas grade book. Come discuss any concerns with me promptly. A passing grade in this course is
required.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Attendance and participation and in-class assignments: 40% (110 points)


Homework assignments: 40% (110 points)
Final portfolio (see below): 20% (55 points)

ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION:

ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY!! This is a highly interactive class. 40% of your grade is based on your
ability to get to class, get there on time, and remain the entire class session. You are expected to be
alert and attentive, and be prepared by having your reading and assignments up to date.

HOMEWORK:

Homework is assigned, shared, collected and graded throughout each week. Many assignments are
explained and practiced during class time. Graded in-class assignments or quizzes may be given with no
advanced notice and cannot be made up. Due dates for assignments are firm unless special arrangements
are made with the instructor. This is 40% of your grade, so be sure to stay on top of the assignments.
FINAL PORTFOLIO:

Your final portfolio is 20% of your grade and will include the following:

1. A career research project


2. A developed goal statement
3. A draft of your Academic Plan at EvCC
4. A projected college financial plan
5. A personal reflection on the value you gained in this course

CANVAS:

I will be using Canvas for this course. All grades will be available on Canvas for you to see throughout the
term. You will always know where you stand in this course by checking Canvas. I will post announcements
for the class on Canvas, so you should check it regularly.

CLASS CONDUCT:

You are expected to treat both your classmates and your instructor with courtesy and respect at all times.
This includes turning off all computers, cell phones and tablets BEFORE ENTERING THE CLASSROOM OR
RISK BEING ASKED TO LEAVE THE CLASSROOM. This includes text messaging and checking your
messages. Disruptive students will be asked to leave the classroom. See the EvCC student handbook for
behavior expectations.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:

Cheating of any kind will not be tolerated. See the EvCC Student Handbook for details.

STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES:

 Last day to drop with a full refund: September 28, 2018


 Drop-date (no grade): October 5, 2018
 Drop with 50% refund: October 12, 2018
 Drop with “W” (withdrawal): November 16, 2018

1. If you are repeating this course in order to attempt to earn a better grade than the one given when the
same course was taken earlier, you must submit a course repeat card to the Enrollment Services office
immediately. Otherwise, the earlier low grade will continue to be counted in the GPA.

2. If you are enrolled in this class in order to remedy an incomplete grade given in the same course within
the past year, please consult Enrollment Services (425-388-9210) immediately. It is probable that this is
not an effective plan and will create a mess, as well as cost you extra money.
