THESIS STATEMENT

Definition

According to Shuttleworth (2009) that “A thesis statement is a sentence that states what you
want your paper to show, what you want to convince your readers of after having read your
thesis”.

Locating the thesis statement

The first thing to remember when locating a thesis statement is the point of author that is
trying to prove. Always remember that “A thesis can only be expressed by a complete,
declarative sentence (not a question, either).”

Sometimes all you need to identify in the thesis is the “abstract – the brief summary, usually
just a short paragraph, provided with the listing of many articles in most databases”
However, an abstract is not always provided. In those cases, you may need to read point that
they are trying to prove (Oldham, n.d.)

The thesis statement is located in the introductory paragraph, almost always at the end of
that paragraph.

TOPIC SENTENCE

Definition
A topic sentence captures the meaning
of the entire paragraph or group of
sentences it tells what the passage is
mainly about (Colorado, n.d.)
