Literature review
Hostel is a formal house for a student who studies at a college or university. A student
who is their house is situated far from the institution usually chooses to stay in the
hostel. Therefore, the equipment and facilities that available in the hostel must fulfill
their basic need at least, to meet the standard quality of life. The hostel is built with
some institutional or formal characteristics and where students have access to the
university recreational facilities (Khozaei, Ayub, Hassan & Khozaei, 2010). Such facilities
that include in the hostel are bedroom, which can add as a study or sleeping place,
bathroom, toilet, kitchen, laundry, recreational areas and access to the internet service.
Abramson (2009) also said that further facilities can be more exciting if available, such
as an ATM, car park, mini market, bookshop and cafeteria within the precinct of the
students’ housing.
There is few research conducted to investigate student satisfaction with hostel facilities.
As stated in Afifah Nabilah bt Mohamad Safei, Bai Jing, Lan Zheng Yan, and Mariam
Ahamada (2015) research study, the result revealed that 77% of respondents are fairly
satisfied with the hostel facilities provided, while the other 23% are quite unsatisfied
with it. The same goes for Jemien Entol, Yoong Chow Ho, Tze Ching Ong (2015)
research study, and Muhamad Shah Kamal Ideris, Lim Ting YI, Safarina Mohd Rodzi,
Abd Rahim Romle, Mohd Akmal Hakim Mohamad Zabri and Nor Azlindamazlini
Mohamad (2016), state that majority of the students are satisfied with the hostel
facilities provided. In contra, a research study by Mary Ajayi, PhD, Akuakanwa Nwosu,
Yusuf Ajani (2015) said that a low level of satisfaction with hostel facilities is observed.
Based on a study that was conducted by UL. Mansoor and MAM Hussain Ali at 2015
"Impact of hostel students satisfaction on their academic performance in Sri Lankan
Universities," study shows there is statistical evidence to claim that there is a
relationship between hostel students’ satisfaction and their academic performance. The
study found empirical evidence to support the hypothesis of hostel students’ satisfaction
is positively related to their academic performance. A finding derived from univariate
analysis if the level of hostel students’ satisfaction in the universities is moderate
implying that it greater degree of improvements are needed to reach the level of very
high. This study identified seven factors relevant to students’ satisfaction with the
hostel facilities. These seven factors are accommodation, medical facilities & location of
hostels, sports facilities, food facilities, inmate cooperation, library facilities and, safety
& security. Out of these seven factors, five factors significantly influence the academic
performance of the students. These factors are accommodation, food facilities, inmate
cooperation, library facilities and safety & security. These five factors have to be
improved in the university hostel in the future for the high level of hostel students’
academic performance. The selected sample for the study contained 367 final year
hostel students from two universities in Eastern Province, Sri Lanka using a random
sampling method. A questionnaire survey was administered. There is statistical
evidence to claim that there is a relationship between hostel students’ satisfaction and
their academic performance. The study found empirical evidence to support the
hypothesis of hostel students’ satisfaction is positively related to their academic
performance.
J. Khalid, A. Janee Ali & M. Reevany Bustami (2018) on Critical factors affecting
international students' satisfaction of hostel facilities: A case study of Universiti Sains
Malaysia shows positive impact . A total of 22 international students from nine different
nationalities were interviewed. A qualitative approach was employed. Interviews were
conducted. The study sought to explore the international students’ experiences with
regards to the quality and sizes of hostel rooms, support service facilities, and services
rendered by hostel management. The findings from the interviews indicate that
occupants are generally satisfied with the facilities and services available at the hostels.
They showed satisfaction with the cleanliness of the bathroom, kitchen, and lobbies.
However, they were indecisive about their satisfaction with the management of the
hostels particularly about health emergency issues and quick response against
complaints. This feedbacks obtained should inform any decisions regarding future
renovations and effective management of the hostels. The study recommends effective
policies and maintenance management practices for the institution’s hostel facilities to
improve the comfortability of international students.
