B (ANY 3)
1. One or more students are not participating or engaged in the lesson.

Well, for this situation, I must say that though quite challenging for teachers but you
need to `recruit students interest'. Teachers need to find ways to make learning relevant,
authentic and valuable in students lives by :

1) Connecting what you are teaching to real life.

2) Students interest and fascination.
3) Give students choices
4) Present information in multiple formats
5) Teach students self - monitoring skills.

As a teacher, I will also increase the wait time from 1.5 seconds to a mere three seconds
which will in turn increase accuracy and also students participation. I suggest front loading and
giving them the questions ahead of time, so as to gain 100% participation.

2. You have assigned a task, and some of the students have already completed it, but
others are still working.

In this situation the ones who have completed their work, say for eg, if four of them have
finished then they can be appointed as ` volunteers' for the four rows in the class and can assist
the teacher in the successful completion of the task of the entire class. Be it book collection or
worksheet submission etc.

In this manner I can sort out discipline problems as well since by channelizing the
energy and time of such students and appointing them leaders will not only boost their self
esteem and confidence but in turn teach them the value of `being responsible'.

Eventually, even the slow learners or the ones who are disruptive by nature, in the next
lesson will try competing and completing the task earlier to become `volunteers' and thus
create healthy competitions in class.

3. A group of students come into the classroom after the lesson has begun.

I will explain to students that coming late has both intellectual and social costs as they
detract from their classmate's learning and also interrupt the instructor's train of thoughts.

Also, will make them realize that how by coming late for class they not only miss the
important framing information but the distraction they create will harm their classmates integrity
and fellowship too.

Another way to handle might be to have consequences for lateness for examples:

1. Two late arrivals counts as one absence

2. Post a sign on the door such as "You are late, please be quiet".
3. Assign a task like singing a verse from a song to gain admittance.
4. Keep short quizzes at the beginning of class. Latecomers miss the quiz
and so the points.
TESOL Mid-term Assignment ( after phase 5)
Attempt both questions:

A. Design a lesson plan for enhancing either listening or reading skills.

The duration of the lesson needs to be 40-45minutes.

The parameters that needs to be filled up are as follows :
1.Final objective of the lesson .This should state what the students will be able
to do at the end of the lesson ( behavioral), how ( in groups, pairs or
individually ) , using what ( materials)
2. Age :
3. Language level
4. Materials used ( A copy of the material can be sent as attachment )
5. The actual lesson should have :
(a) A warmer
(b) Context setting stage ( pre-listening /pre-reading )
(c) While listening / While reading stage
(d) Post listening / Post reading stage .
The lesson needs to have all the parameters filled out and planned in details.
Any material that is used can be sent as an attachment/ photocopy.
B. Consider any 3 of the following situations and discuss how you
might handle them.

1. One or more students are not participating or engaged in the lesson.

2. A group of students come into the classroom after the lesson has begun.
3. One student has her head down on the desk and other students are
looking at her.
4. The beginning of the class is delayed because two students are
fighting.
5. You have assigned a task, and some of the students have already
completed it, but others are still working.
6. You have purposely counted off students to work in random groups of
5, but some students want to stay with their friends and don’t go to the
assigned group.
7. One student is causing disruption (acting out).
