THE REVEALED
I
The booming commotion
of Existence
that rolls
in the bosom of the Beyond,
evolves into a
thrilling rhyme
and upheaves
into a shooting Becoming
of the Being with echoes
that float
with an embodiment of Energy-
that is Logos, the Word —
the Beginning !
II
He, the Word-the Source of Creation—
manifests Himself
with all His properties
into all that hath manifested,—
but the Beyond
comprehended Him not—
though He shineth in the bosom
of the Beyond !
III
It is Energy
which lies
in the embodiment
of Word that remains
as He is—
though manifesting Himself
into all that was created—
That is God,
That is Word,
That is Divine !
IV
The thrill of Existence which occurs
due to Apathy and Sympathy
for What lies Beyond,
is a stream of Will
that tends to make the Word
to become conscious
in manifesting Himself into many
like Him albeit unlike—
by their mutual impulses,—
moving
spiro-elliptically
one round the other !
V
Beyond is what intervenes
to make
the manifestations
unlike, different and discrete,
though the Affinity
that lies under,
tends always to make
all to be One !
VI
The inter-action of
manifestations of Word
in the Beyond
makes the unlike, different
and discrete,
instinct with life—
from fine to gross ;—
thus the Divine creates Himself
into life
surrounded with blood and flesh
which are enlivened too !

VII
In such a way,
different, discrete—
finer and grosser
blood and flesh are manifested ;—
blood and flesh
are embodied with life
as beings, as creatures—
from which Man comes forth
by degrees ;—
discrete individuals with
other phenomena
become the environment
of every individual,
and make it awaken,
in life and consciousness
with the thrust of impulses
from mutual affinity :
while on the other hand
He, the Word
became Supreme Being,
the Father to the manifested
and The Individual
who comes forth
ever-enchanted
with sympathy and love
for the Supreme Being,—
at the crying call
of panic-stricken sufferers,
becomes the Beloved God in flesh—
the Divine,
the Ideal,—
The Way to rescue !
VIII
Only then recedes the Beyond
when, sympathy invokes love—
to make one attached to Him
by Whom
Being and Becoming
is accelerated ;—
and then
knowledge appears
with an
illuminating zeal !
IX
And knowledge shines
and
redeems the Being to accelerate
fulfilling in a concord
the Ideal, individual
and environment,—
towards Becoming—
towards a superior Becoming
with a gradually unfolding
memory
of the Father
by service and surrender
unto the Beloved !
X
And when rapping’s on
the thrilling tension
of attachment to the Beloved
occur
due to the thrust of environment
and complexes—
directly and collectively,—
the impressions rebound
and set in the individual—
according to sympathy and apathy,—
with a tremor of sensation
into resultants,
and are adjusted
with a solution
tending towards his interest ;—
thus knowledge grows—
with a gradual generalization
of experiences
into a subtler and subtler harmony
of the individual,
the Ideal and wisdom ;
In this way—
as varieties of rapping
diminish gradually,
the individual
plunges into the Beloved
through a grand generalization of
wisdom !
XI
The sympathetic affinity
that induces her opposite-equal
to dwell in herself,
and breeds to beget him
measured in different shapes,
is Female ;
whereas the entity that inclines
towards female
to fulfill her
is Male ;—
apathy always resists the one
to become the other :
Female is the shelter
that nourishes, absorbs
and reproduces one into many ;—
and the inclination of the Male
towards female
without something to
uplift existence,
dwindles them
to decease !

CHALAR SAATHI
(Comapnion on the Way)

Roll on—
like a flood
over the sorrow, sufferings
and calamities of the World,—
with love, sympathy and service
and with the message
of Beloved the Lord,—
with a knowledge and activity
that illuminates
the way of the dull,
and deteriorating depressed;
flow on—
extremely unresting and undisturbed;
if female wants
let her run after you,
proclaiming admiration and worship,
establishing the kingdom
of peace and happiness
with a wistful soothing gaze
after her beloved;—
but wish not
for that
at all ! 1

CONTINUITY BRINGS SUCCESS

Whether you understand or do not understand,
whether you can do or cannot do,
let the continuity of your effort
remain unbroken and unobstructed;
seek out the way to attainment (siddhi),—
you will be successful,
accomplishment will come,
and your establishment will surely
establish your Ideal,—
know it for sure! 2

SERVICE ACHIEVES RENOWN

Remain ever serviceable to people
in such a way that through your service
in fulfilling the needs of your environment
as far as possible
they can embrace life, glory and growth,
and by so doing
spread out into everyone’s heart,
and let these things become your character,—
you will see,
renown, with constant victory songs.
will make your glorious,—
no doubt ! 3

NATURE’S ABHORRENCE
Nature abhors those
who insult and colour
the perceptible—
which are before their senses,
on the testimony of
indirect knowledge ! 4

THOUGHTS OF SADNESS
Do not stay troubled by thoughts of sadness;
the feeling of sadness cannot gladden anyone!
Rather, think
how you can make people happy,
what kind of behavior makes people happy,
how that can be done, and the like,
and set yourself to work,—
you will be happy
and able to make others happy too! 5

WISDOM THROUGH LOVE

From mental equilibrium and love
comes the advent
of wisdom and the vision that sees good;
but from conflict, lack of faith, and dissatisfaction
ignorance and pessimism are created! 6

PAIN AT OTHERS’ FORTUNE

If you want to lose your way and fall into trouble
by making yourself unfortunate—
then never in the least renounce
the feeling of pain at others’ fortune. 7

WILLINGNESS TO WORK THROUGH LOVE

From love
constancy, joyfulness and willingness to work arise;
and from aversion come
depression, inactivity, sadness
and lack of peace! 8

OPTIMIST AND PESSIMIST

It is the optimist who finds a golden opportunity
for progress and delight
within trouble, danger, obstruction, and sorrow!
But the pessimist
at once finds within all good
inability and impossibility—
ineradicable suffering of misfortune! 9

FAULT-FINDING—OBSTACLE TO UPLIFTMENT
If you want to become elevated,
bid farewell to fault-finding forever;
whatever good quality you see in a person,
think of that, speak of that,
and discuss it;
if you can, be careful—
that no one’s fait
does any kind of damage in you! 10

FAULT-FINDING
If fault is to be found,
it has to be contemplated;
it has to be brought out by thinking it over;
and with that, one is to keep awake
a sense of irritation or hostility,
and in doing this,
just such feelings will be stored in the brain;
you will find how after some days
you are acting out those faults;
so be careful—
of fault-finding,
of contemplating faults,
and of irritation and hostility! 11

EMPTYING-OUT THE FAULT

And if you have at all found fault with anyone,
and it remains stored in your head,—
enquiring into its cause and circumstances,
properly understanding how it became possible,
with a feeling of sympathy
empty out from your head what is stored there
in such a manner that it becomes abnormal to you
for this kind of thing to happen again! 12

HYPOCRISY
Hypocrisy by goading
neighbours to an illusion
blurs the door of prosperity ! 13
DISCERNING OF CHARACTER
Talk, thought, dealings and activities
declare, redeem and indicates
what he really is
and, what he can get ! 14

GAINING ATTAINMENT (SIDDHI)

Doing, adherence, observation and following,—
these few establish
perception, knowledge, skill,
and attainment (siddhi) !15

THE ROYAL SIGN OF SUCCESS

Regarding one whose vision of good fortune and opportunity
blooms in times of difficulties
with faithfulness, gratitude and skill in work,
you can say with utmost certainty,
whatever he may be, it is absolutely sure
that his head will be graced
with the crown of success! 16
EFFICIENCY AND DEXTERITY IN LOVE
Love alone can discover how its beloved
can be elevated in life, glory, love and growth,
and thus overflow into  his environment;
so, love alone,
gathers normal wisdom in one,
establishes the beloved practically
with efficiency and dexterity!17

LUXURY OF THOUGHT
Whenever you find that any thought or movement of yours
does not invoke activity,
or does not stick to activity,—
understand
that is only a luxury
of your thought or imagination! 18
 THE TOUCHSTONE OF PURE DESIRE
 For the sake of some desire you have
 you cannot ignore the complexes antagonistic to it, —
 this is the means of knowing
 that your desire is not pure ! 19
FOPPISH* WISH
Your go, character, words, behavior,
and continuity or adherence
do not go near,
or find it difficult to go near
the way of doing or the way of being
by which the object of your desire
can be had,—
definitely understand—
your desire is not at all pure;
it is rather mere foppishness of desire. 20
*foppish—capricious, whimsical.
VISION COLORED BY CONCEPTION
In whatever way your thought and conduct
has shaped your nature,
wherever you go, whatever you see,
your nature will conceive the environment
in just that way
and see it in just that way! 21
VICTORY THROUGH FULFILLING NEEDS
If you want to conquer,
not by overwhelming through the application
of external force,—
stand up and be enthusiastic and practical
in fulfilling one’s needs! 22
“YES” CAN
There is as much difference
between being able and not being able
as there is between “yes” and “no”;
one who does not invite the “not” into the being able,
who has no question about being able,
yet depends on doing,
who is not stopped in the joy of doing by anything,—
he can! 23
“NO” CANNOT
And, one who wants to haggle with the thought of
being able
by inviting “no” in—
to whom “no” is so trustworthy!—
for whom there isn’t any feeling, any thought
or any activity
without “no”,
however much he may equip himself
with the paraphernalia for being able or doing,
everything of his,
embracing that “no”,
falls into the numbness of sleep! 24
THE WAY TO PERFECTION
To think “I cannot do”
or to have doubts about being able
actually creates the not-being-able;
banish the “no” and the doubt from being able—
stick to it, try,—
perfection is before you! 25
“NO” AS A RELATIVE
If one whose wife is “no”
and whose brother-in-law is “it can’t be”
is given a warm reception,
the throne of adversity will remain unshaken,
no doubt! 26
INSPIRATION FOR EFFICIENT WORK
As easy and swift the inspiration anywhere,
so natural and indomitable
is the efficiency in work there! 27
HAPPINESS
Enlivening, elevating, and delighting
your being,
and disseminating it into the environment,
it makes everyone elated,—
if anything is to be called happiness,
it is this! 28
POVERTY THROUGH IDLENESS
Idleness, “I cannot”, “It cannot be”,
“It can’t be done,”—
be careful and alert
about all such thoughts and conduct,
for they easily infect the progeny,
and the environment is contaminated by them;
as a result, family, society and country
are stupefied, prostrated and depressed,
and thus finished off in terrible poverty! 29

FULFILLING NECESSITIES
Do not give indulgence to idleness;
be intent on service;
felicitate people by receiving them respectfully,
to the best of your ability;
in whatever way you can,
help in the fulfillment of others’ necessities;
remaining pleased and satisfied yourself,
please and satisfy others;
you will see,
even if you don’t want them,
fortune and resources
will freely remain with you;
poverty, staying far away,
will bow down to you! 30

CHEATING
If you want to keep
the love of cheating unbroken,
then why should you take any trouble
in efforts to nourish the one
by whose provision you are being nourished? 31

FRIENDS OF POVERTY
With idleness, distrust, self-concern and ingratitude
as friends,
you will not have to search for poverty,
or even with one of them;—
each of them is such a friend of poverty
that it cannot get along
if any are missing;
if this kind of wealth has settled in your heart
you will not have to bear
the distress of lacking sorrow! 32

SPOILING WORK THROUGH PROCRASTINATION

Procrastination is the friend of idleness—
the guide to the spoilage of work!
do bid farewell to procrastination
by doing what is to be done
immediately;
efficiency and success
will be your servants! 33

GREED
Excessive eager desire
which goes beyond appropriate needs
may be called greed;
be wary of this transgression,
because by leading you into depression,
it may end up in your death! 34

DISTRESS THROUGH ANGER

One maddened by anger
obstructs others,
there being no control over his selfish blindness;
distress, all-conquering,
follows him with loud laughter! 35

SELF-INTEREST
To fulfill him from whom one gets,
to make him exuberant,
and to remove anything that restricts acquisition for him
is the meaning of self-interest;
where receiving has become prominent
without fulfilling the source from whom one gets,
self-interest, swallowed up by error,
withers and falls senseless certainly! 36

RESULTS OF STEALING
Steal not,—
intelligence chafed with desire,
without giving anyone a loftier recoupment,
seeks an unjust and secret satisfaction,—
that is stealing;
in stealing
the intelligence,
by going on harming others day by day,
disappears into deterioration;
through doing
in the way by which desire is fulfilled
perception and knowledge are awakened
and thus the object of desire is achieved;
but in stealing
this process is wounded and depressed,
and one embraces what is contrary to Dharma;
for these reasons stealing is so hateful,
so sinful, so mean;
therefore I say,
do not bring destruction upon yourself
and your environment
by giving indulgence to this thieving mentality,—
be careful! 37

CONQUERING THE PASSIONS

Do not become disturbed
in the effort to conquer the enemies—
lust, anger, and the like;
that feeling of disturbance actually establishes them;
instead, make the passions desist
by engaging in some subject or feeling
which is so attractive
that the matter of passion hardly comes up for you;
see—
how easy it is to master a passion! 38

SAVINGS AND SERVICE

Accumulate savings,
but for service!
if your savings do not offer worship to service,
know for sure
they are for something that hurts becoming! 39

ATTENDANCE WITHOUT SERVICE

Service means that which makes a person
fit, at ease, elevated and delighted;
when it does not do so,
yet attendance is provided,
that service invites only denial! 40

FOOLISH SERVICE
Where service cannot bring well-being, delight
and upliftment,
moreover, the exertion, anxiety and restlessness
all end up in futility.—
know for sure—
that service is foolish service! 41

ADJUSTMENT OF DEVILISH EGO

Whenever your ego wants to establish itself
by slighting or denying another,
then know it to be the devilish ego;
engage your ego in such a manner
that by directing it
you can invite the life, glory and growth
of your environment! 42

DEMAND OF THE UNSERVICEABLE

Without doing at least something of service to a person—
through which he gets comfort, peace and delight—
when the time comes to get something from someone,
don’t try to get it by demanding from him,
saying that he is your own man;
you won’t get anything that way;
rather, humiliation and neglect
with a deadly unexpected blow
will make you sorry! 43

DEATH AND IMMORTALITY

As much as you become attached to the many—
to each according to its kind—
without aiming at one,
then each of those particular attachments
separately and in various ways,
with the creation of scattered complexes
goes to tear you to pieces,
and thus clears the path to ignorance and death;
and whenever you embrace the many,
having taken your stay in devotion to one,
then those many things
and the complexes created out of them,
achieving a state of restraint
through that devotion to one,
and gradually falling into order,
will invite immortality
with the enkindling of perception and wisdom! 44
EVIDENCE OF IDEAL-CENTEREDNESS
As much as you become dedicated to the interest of the Ideal,
so much will skill in service, efficiency in work,
sweetness in words and behavior,
sympathy and expansiveness
anoint your character
and become reflected in your environment;
the urge
which has made you dedicated to the interest of the Ideal—
which has made his establishment your supreme interest,
compelling you, though without your knowing it,
will shape you in this way;
and this very thing is the evidence
of your Ideal-centeredness! 45
CONSCIOUSNESS AND DHARMA THROUGH IMPACT
You are conscious just then
when your environment makes an impact on you;
and this consciousness is the infallible evidence
that you are alive!
so, as is the kind of impact your environment makes on you,
such will be the way
your feeling, perception and passion
come together;
if this is so,
then Dharma is the doing
by which you along with your environment
can grow in continuous expansion
of life, glory and growth;
speak, practice and perform
whatever makes you and your environment
become of this nature,—
you will see how greatly you are relieved
from misfortune, evil and fear ! 46
THE IDEAL AND DEVOTION TO HIM
Service to him, keeping his company,
and pursuing him with devotion
make a person gradually uplifted in life, glory and growth;
when single-minded attachment or devotion is fixed
on him,
and when it stays unbrokenly adhered—
the environment and world being unable
to produce any kind of scattering,
so that those scatted impulses (from the environment)
are related and adjusted
and achieve meaningfulness,—
then that devotion,
prospering in feeling, knowledge and perception,
embraces immortality,—
he alone is the Ideal, or the Guide,
the Beloved;
that is why single-minded devotion
to Ideal, Beloved or Guide
is so essential in human life;
if you want to carry on your life keeping Dharma unbroken,
then Ideal, Beloved or Guide is of primary necessity!
placing your attachment, devotion or love
in him
and considering him the supreme interest,
follow him;—
you will be successful! 47
WHAT LOVE WANTS
Prema (supreme love) or love wants to establish
its beloved in life, glory and growth
by squeezing out all that it has;
the beloved is its supreme interest;
it searches through its world,
and whatever it finds that is beneficial
to life, glory and growth,
it brings to equip its beloved,
and in this it feels itself to be meaningful,
and its nourishment, satisfaction and liberation
lie only in this;
it doesn’t want to be independent excluding him;
submission to the beloved
and service to the beloved
comprise its Dharma, wealth, desire and liberation;*
while making its beloved abundant
in perception, knowledge, work, life, and resources
in this way,
prema imperceptibly becomes established
in abundance itself;
hence prema is so sinless
and so very great ! 48
*Dharma, artha, kama and moksha are the four goals
of life in traditional Hindu thinking.
WHAT LUST WANTS
Lust want to get the one it lusts after
as a present,
and in the way it wishes;
it is completely unwilling to bear the difficulty
of making the one it lusts after
prosper—
if no breach of any kind takes place in its enjoyment
because of that unwillingness;
thus lust makes a person foolish,
steals from his world,
and, to whatever extent greed for enjoyment
somehow keeps him enkindled,
wants to keep him confined in its boundaries;—
and the termination of that
is the termination of everything!
this is why it has no expansiveness;
life and glory are in a state of contraction;
its stay is in the death-puzzle
of the bottomless pit of darkness,—
that is sin;
so it is weak, depressed and unknowing.
Consider—what do you want ? 49
SUBDOING LUST THROUGH LOVE
One who goes to subdue lust
without depending on love
is generally destroyed by lust
in an horrendous upheaval ! 50
IMPARTATION OF THE BELOVED
Spontaneous extolment of the Beloved
and a natural tendency to impart him to others
comprise one characteristic sign
of attraction or love;
from this it can be understood
that one is well-content and radiant
in acceptance of the Beloved! 51
LOVE IN CONTRARY CONFLICTS
If feeling, devotion and love
do not become indomitable
in conflicts that are contrary to them,
then it is of course doubtful
whether they were there in the first place! 52
SATAN’S SORCERY
If, tempted by something,
you pas over your Ideal,
thought that neither has him as objective
nor establishes him,—
do understand—
by Satan’s sorcery
you have become entranced and enticed;
even now if you turn away from it,
you can take hold of deliverance ! 53
CONSCIENCE
The response of the environment
which is in the brain as memory and knowledge,—
to reflect on that is conscience;
and one who determines what is to be done
by that kind of reflection
is conscientious ! 54
TRUE LOVE
Making one’s heart overflowing,
and extending into the environment,
love establishes the beloved
through service and Jaajan;*
and where this is absent,
be doubtful about the love;
try to understand! 55
MENTAL POVERTY THROUGH APATHY TO JAAJAN
When you see that your inclination to Jaajan
is becoming poor, or has ceased,
know for sure—
your mind’s perceptiveness and enjoyment
day by day have become weakened
and are becoming more so! 56

DEVELOPMENT THROUGH JAAJAN

Jaajan, making anew the one who receives it,
gives him enjoyment in various ways;
that is why jaajan regarding wisdom or supreme love
is an easy stairway of progress! 57
ENJOYING THE BELOVED THROUGH JAAJAN
When love or wisdom makes life elated,
then only does the inclination to Jaajan
become ardent in searching for new persons
in various ways;
it wants to speak in various ways
and in various fashions
about what is dear to it,
and by doing so
wants to enjoy in various ways;
whenever you see that this searching and finding
is beginning to stop,
the perception and expansion
of the beloved within you
is becoming inert! 58
MANY-GUISED LUST
Where not getting makes you sorry,
where someone’s prospering makes you depressed
and someone’s appreciation of others perturbs you,
yet attachment and attraction
are making you extremely greedy,—
do understand that love is not there;
what is there is many-guised lust! 59
SHELTER AND ATTACHMENT IN DEPENDENCE
Much better than depending on someone
for the sake of getting shelter
is depending on someone on account of attachment;
in the former case one’s character may not be colored;
in the second case though
it definitely must be—
but this depends on the person! 60
DOUBT
The doubter,
always doubting the tendency to progress,
by suppressing activity
calls in his own ruin! 61
ON GETTING
To get—
pursue doing;
mere consideration
often paralyzes the getting! 62
SORROW
If sorrow, by invoking regret,
narrows the path to downfall,
then it is befitting;
otherwise it is best to neglect it! 63
TO DOUBT ATTACHMENT
To deny or doubt or analyze
one’s own feelings, devotion, and love for someone
and to dump the Elixir of Life
into the dustbin
are one and the same thing! 64
JAAJAN—EGOISTIC AND LOVING
When Jaajan is a matter of one’s own egotism,
though done in the name of the Beloved,
if it is assailed
it falls into depression;
by this sign you can determine
whose Jaajan you are doing;
if Jaajan is born out of love,
and is for the Beloved,
then in opposition or unexpected injury
it becomes so indomitable, victorious,
and enjoyable for both
that is comprehensible only
to the one who has enjoyed it! 65
EGOISTIC JAAJAN UNDER A MASK OF LOVE
Whenever you have become ardent to establish
your indispensability, importance and supremacy
before your Beloved
by speaking about the success, glory and enjoyableness
of your Jaajan,
and the least lapse in that establishment,
making you impatient,
is arousing pain and opposing feelings
in regard to the Beloved and his environment,—
understand—
this Jaajan is not out of love for your Beloved,
but merely out of love for ego! 66
WRETCHEDNESS IN DISREGARD OF IDEAL
If a man does not pursue glory
for the sake of establishing his Ideal,
and is devoted to sex-enjoyment and money
for establishing his self-interest,
and hence gathers contempt and fruitlessness,—
it is better not to call him a man,
but rather, a wretch! 67
GROWTH AND DOWNFALL IN PREACHING
Whatever you preach about will grow,
so watch out
not to direct your tendency to preach
toward that which brings the downfall of life and growth,—
do not die, nor cause death! 68
OBSTACLES TO NORMAL WISDOM
One who sees or perceives
each and everyone of the world
by putting on the eyeglasses of hearsay
or of ideas fabricated by his own mind,
is never at all troubled
by normal wisdom! 69
FEELING IN CHARACTER AND CONDUCT
As is the feeling residing in you
in a certain way at a certain time,
so, in general, will be your thought, conduct
and speech;
and however elevated it becomes
and thus remains thoroughly absorbing to you,
such will be the elevation
of your thought, conduct and speech! 70
TRUTH AND FALSEHOOD
That which has existence and expansion,
and that which, keeping the being unharmed,
leads it in progress,
and moreover does not bring discord or cessation
to any other being
is truth;
again, that which harms this being
and scatters another’s being
or causes it to deteriorate
is falsehood! 71
SADHANA AND SUCCESS
The harmonious repeated effort
to comprehend the means for mastering something
is called sadhana;
and when as a result of knowing and doing it
the character flourishes
then success (siddhi) embraces it! 72
FATE AND RESULTS OF ACTION
Your continuous effort in activity
affects the environment,
and the results of your actions issue out from it
and become transformed into various forms through
the transmission;
as a result of this, what is waiting for you
outside the limits of your knowledge
is your fate! 73
PROVIDENCE AND PERSONALITY
Inherent instincts born of spontaneous distinctiveness
with which one is born
and the way the environment accepts one
as a result of them, —
that is Providence;
and personality is
that power laid within distinctiveness
which, making one real,
guides one within nature and the environment! 74
SPIRITUALISM
The feeling
which weaves through and through existence
and by this is inspired and adjusted,
and thus is reflected in thought, conduct and activity
is spiritualism in substance! 75
SPIRITUALISM AND ACTIVITY
Wherever there is no spiritualism,
that is, where being is not made the basis,
yet there is vitality in action,
that does not establish anyone or make anyone
meaningful;
and in the same way,
where there is spiritualism
but no impulse to activity,
that does not make anyone blessed or delighted! 76

THE VISION OF BRAHMA*

If you have not been able to know
by bringing into your own perception
the individual and the whole,
then your vision of Brahma
is nothing more than a derangement of the brain! 77
*”That which being developed and becoming everything, yet remains the same is Brahma.”
Sri Sri Thakur: Satyanusaran, p. 97

YOGA
To be yoked or attached to something
is called the yoga of that;
so the condition and results of the yoga
depend on the consequences inherent in its object! 78
YOGA AND ASCETICISM
When all of one’s determination
has been placed in something or someone,
that is, when all of his determination,
regulating his activity,
makes the life and growth of something or someone
exuberant,
he is a yogi, his is an ascetic! 79
THE SEER
One who, going through the passions,
that is, knowing the passions,
integrating and solving them
and making them meaningful in One,
has achieved the salvation of his mind,
is a Seer;
hence it is written:
“The Seer is the seer of the mantra!”** 80
**The literal meaning of “mantra” is “that which rescues the mind.”

REALITY—THE LIMITLESS WITHIN THE LIMITED

Whether you are a worshipper of God-with-form
or a believer in the Formless,
if that God-with-form or Formless One
is not revealed within your own perception
in knowledge and vision,
that is, if the limited does not bloom in your vision
in a practical way
as the unlimited and boundless,
then meaningless grimacing imagination
will not release you at all! 81
GOD IN REALITY
Do not try to shape your God
in the imagination that he is unknowable—
do not lay a path to eternal depression in futility!
Where all or most of your passions become meaningful,
there engage your need, love, devotion and prema,—
your God will become real
in your perception there
and thus be manifested—
as Arjuna found his God in Sri Krishna!
Fear not,—
delusion will not be able to lead you astray! 82
MEANINGFULNESS OF PREVIOUS PROPHETS
Experience, vision, science and truth
become established in expansiveness
in making the previous Prophets meaningful;
moreover, they do not insult
man’s accumulated knowledge,
bringing in meaninglessness and deterioration
by putting our the light
of those previous Ones! 83
DISREGARD AND INGRATITUDE TO PREVIOUS PROPHETS
One who wants to establish his own view or philosophy
by denying or slighting
the previous Seers, Prophets or Ideals,
who does not accept them with humility
or respectfully correct the deterioration
brought by ignorance into their utterances
in the passage of time,
who furthermore doe not make that correction a basis
for trying to let those sayings be easily understood,
uplifted and lucid
by fulfilling and nurturing them
in a way that befits the time,
who disparages them and makes them naught,
who thus is determined to make them utterly futile,—
do doubt such a one,
because true it is—
the emergence of what the present Prophet is saying or doing
is based on the incontrovertible utterances
of the previous Ones;
so he who cuts himself off
because of disregard and ingratitude to the previous Ones,
and is diligent for self-establishment,
by infusing that ingratitude and separation
into the followers of the present Prophet,
will bring degeneration into the nation and the culture—
there is no doubt about it;
that is why I say—
do not waver in being cautious about this! 84
THE PREVIOUS PROPHET IN THE PRESENT PROPHET
Where the present Prophet,
establishing the previous Prophet,
is inspired by his exaltation,
know surely—
it was by that same inspiration
that the organization based on the previous one
came to be! 85
DHARMA AND ANTI-DHARMA
Dharma means that which lets life and growth
embrace immortality
by binding them in unison and upholding them
with the inclination to life, glory and upliftment;
and that which harms life and growth
and takes one on the path of contraction,
depression and downfall
and makes one touch death—
may be called anti-Dharma! 86
DHARMA WHICH IS DEVOID OF SERVICE
You are practicing Dharma,
yet it has not come to be your interest
to serve your own life and growth
and the life and growth of your environment;
rather, an attitude toward them
of mean-mindedness, neglect, hatred and the like
has come in and made you narrower;—
know for sure,
you have not at all invoked Dharma;
you have been worshipping narrowness, ego and hatred,
and in return you are getting the same! 87

JAAJAN* NORMAL IN ADHERENCE TO THE IDEAL

You have adhered to the Ideal,
yet the emotion of that adherence
which is flowing within you
is not nourishing the environment with the Ideal
and making it pleased with him,
not is it issuing out into the environment
or flooding it
in its urge and maddening zeal
to impart and establish him;—
know that your adherence to your Ideal
is only a show, nothing more! 88

*Jaajan: infusing the Ideal into the environment

ALL PASSIONS ENGAGED FOR ESTABLISHING THE IDEAL

Ideal is your father,
Ideal is your maintainer,
Ideal is your creator,
Ideal is your guide,
Ideal is your most beloved!
Oh you, the wise! Be for the Ideal in all respects,
and let your sole and steady effort be
to establish him in all respects in your world
and to become aglow with meaningfulness
so that you can embrace immortality;
however many good and bad passions you may have,
let your Ideal thoroughly pervade all of them;
let not immortality, upliftment and life
be insulted in injury
by turning yourself away from him,
becoming mad for lust and wealth,
and surrendering yourself to them,—
stay alert! 89
THE TRAP OF SYMPATHY
Do not become loveless toward your Ideal
or void of diligence for him
under the sway of anyone’s service and sympathy;
a person ascends to success repeatedly
by surmounting the difficulties and troubles
that are created in the awakening of love
for the Ideal
and in the effort to fulfill his desires;
and uncalled-for service, cordiality and sympathy
infatuate a person and make him tremble with greed,
knock him away from the Ideal,
and thus throw him from success into annihilation;
always stay away from this kind of ignorance—
the greedy eyes of depression
will not paralyze you! 90
ACTIVITY UNDESIRABLE TO THE IDEAL
If one does deeds tainted by meanness,
undesired by the Superior, Lord or Ideal,
the courage to come into his contact is weakened;
but if there is normal and sincere attachment
then such pain and repentance surge up
because of the obstruction to communion
that one dismisses all weakness in a moment
in anxious effort bathed in sorrow;—
in intense attraction
one cannot remain without embracing him;
but be careful—
ingratitude and greed for lust
gradually humiliate and distress that sensation
and thus carry one into stupefying darkness;
if this kind of thing happens, turn back at once—
even though there is trouble,
you can find the path! 91
SUCCESS (SIDDHI) THROUGH ALL-ENCOMPASSING INTEREST
IN FOLLOWING THE IDEAL
You may perform thousands of acts of worship,
practice the repetition of the Holy Name
thousands of times,
and meditate thousands of times,
but as long as you cannot become attached to your
Desired One or Ideal
in such a way that he comes to be your interest
in all respects,
that worship, repetition of Name and meditation
cannot be installed in your life, glory and growth
so as to completely fulfill your necessities
and direct your character in actuality. 92
SUCCESS (SIDDHI) FROM JAPA (REPETITION OF THE HOLY NAME)
He out of whom your Japa is produced
is the objective of your Japa;
and if this objective is ignored,
then the mental exercise—
which is to create an enkindlement in you—
instead calls in deterioration,
not becoming coherent through centering on some objective;
but if that mental exercise or churning
achieves coherence with the one who is your objective
and is set in him,
then, by illuminating nature with normal perception,
feeling and wisdom,
it makes the character overflowing
and thus expansive;
that is why
success comes from japa, success comes from japa,
success comes from japa;
and there is no doubt about it! 93
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF JAPA
The significance of repetition of the Holy Name
lies in mentally churning over the subject of repetition
and whatever concerns that
and awakening perception with thought and pursuit;
so if you have not adjusted your repetition of the Holy Name
in this way,
how much can it do anything for you? 94
MEDITATION
Meditation is nothing else than
the way in which a person, by thinking of his Beloved,
becomes awakened and ecstatic,—
that is, to feel the one who is the object of meditation,
to think about him and talk things over in the mind about him,
as he is seen,
with whatever there is in him,
and whatever constitutes him,
and with his doings and speaking, moods and gestures,
and thus arrive at perception, meaningfulness,
and the means of accomplishment,
and to be awakened, overflowing, and whole-heartedly
dedicated to him,
and thus to become extremely eager and indomitable
in making him successful!
Again, uninterrupted ness in this kind of feeling, thinking
and doing
for anyone
makes Him beloved to the one who so thinks of Him,
and when by doing in this way
the object of meditation or the Beloved
becomes the one and only within you
or eternally emancipated within you,
then you also, becoming solely in Him
or eternally emancipated in Him
will be wholly absorbed,
and this condition of absorption
will invite Samadhi*;
again, through this
normal perception will flourish in the brain
and normal feeling will flourish in the mind! 95
*Samadhi: complete absorption of the mind in conceiving something thoroughly.
LACK OF UNDERSTANDING THROUGH NEGLIGENCE
Negligence shoves aside
the understanding’s load of understanding! 96
ENVIRONMENT AND LIFE AND GROWTH IN DHARMA
You are righteous (Dharmik)!
You are always worshipping the Lord,
and occupied with offering, meditation at twilight,
and daily prayers;
yet service, wealth, resources, life, glory, growth,
satisfaction, nourishment and the like
are not offering you ovations,
nor is your environment becoming prosperous
by getting these things from you;
do understand,
in your ostentation of Dharma
you have not invited existence and growth;
so both you and your environment
are being deprived of Dharma! 97
SUCCESSFUL LIVING
Do try to keep your existence normal and unfluctuating
in such a way that you can make your living unobstructed
by taking from nature and the environment
only the ingredients that are for existence;
but if anyone, vanquished in the anxiety of life,
comes to you asking for help,
then as far as possible make him healthy and strong,
giving him more than he needs,
so that you come to be the means to
what is desirable and what is good
for his life and his needs;
see,—
how your life mounts in success so very greatly,
and sends illumination to the horizon
in the expression of its resounding glory! 98

MATINS*, VESPERS** AND PRAYERS

Do not leave off doing matins, vespers and prayers;
and the more you can perform them
with sweetness of feeling, with understanding,
and with eager urge,
the more they will brighten and purify your mind,
and thus uplift your health and your character;
as a result,
service, resources, behavior and skill in work
will be fertilized
and thus make you joyous,—
there is no doubt! 99
*Matins: morning prayer (both words originate from the monastic Catholic tradition)
**Vespers: evening prayer

WEALTH, ENJOYMENT AND LIBERATION FOLLOW DHARMA

Whenever you embrace Dharma practically
with service,
life, wealth, enjoyment and liberation
will definitely serve you;
and whenever you become attracted to their service
and thus incline toward them,
know for certain that they will flee away,
dashing you down so
that it will be extremely hard labor for you
to invite the strength to rise again;
take these things and engage them
in the service of the environment,—
you will achieve good! 100
PERSONAL PROSPERITY IN THE ENVIRONMENT’S PROSPERITY
The chief indication of life is consciousness,
and this consciousness comes into being
from the impact of environing life;
and out of that comes the upward movement
of the mind of integrated passions;
again, this mind,
by considering the favorable and the adverse,
directs a person;
so if you really desire to benefit
your progress, your mind and your life,
then through your service make your environment such
that those who compose it
become healthy and strong
and thus abundant in life and delight! 101
THE ENVIRONMENT A DAILY OBSERVANCE
As a daily observance
see to your environment, individual and collective,
each and every day,
with thought, talk and conversation;
and every day do as much as you are able
to fulfill their necessities,—
see—the goddess of prosperity
will stand firm with you! 102
MEANINGFUL SERVICE
Know for sure—
a person is more benefited if one fulfils his requirements
by serving and caring for his afflicted mind
through remedy, encouragement, help,
sympathy and the like,
than by attending to his physical needs,
disregarding his mind;
when you go to serve someone,
first observe his mental condition
to discover his requirements,
and expanding yourself according to the form
of those needs,
make arrangements for them,
so that he can become healthy and prosperous,—
and thus engage your feelings, words, behavior, resources
and capability
in service as far as possible;
see—
your service will exult in fruitfulness
and be crowned with success! 103
SADHU—THE ACCOMPLISHED ONE
One who implants the clues to success in his character
and is regulating his life according to that
may be called a Sadhu (accomplished one)
in the true sense! 104
JAPA TO AWAKEN PERCEPTION AND WISDOM
AND MAKE THEM BENEFICIAL
You are practicing Japa* and offering worship,
yet your normal perception and wisdom
have not been enkindled,
nor has their tendency to be of benefit,—
know for sure—
you are little engaged in the thought of him
whom you are repeating,
and he whom you are worshipping
has not at all become your interest!
That is why you have not been made anxious
by the concern or necessity to render beneficial
your own and your environment’s life, glory,
nourishment, pleasure and expansion—
as well as his—
by nurturing and satisfying his welfare
and your environment with him in it;
this being the case,
what can this form of Japa and worship
do for you? 105
*Japa: repetition of God’s Name, the Holy Name

CHARACTER AND YOGIC ENDOWMENTS IN SADHANA

(SPIRITUAL EFFORT)
In the practice of spiritual endeavor
the yogic endowments
like sound, light, divine messages and so on
which arise through continuous effort
and profound attention,
indicate the transformation
of the state of your brain;
they may not touch your real being and character;
but what happens through unbroken attachment
of devotion and love for the Ideal,
or yogic practices which include this devotion and love,
attracts the being and character
and so directs the person upward in progress,—
this is definitely certain! 106
THE END OF WEAKNESS
When your devotion, incessantly bearing
the urge to be meaningful in your Ideal
in all respects,
is converted into proficiency in activity,
from then is the beginning
of the end of your weakness! 107
THIS LIFE DETERMINES THE LIFE IN THE OTHER WORLD
The proof that your Dharma
will bring heaven for you in the other world
is that you, along with your environment,
are being elevated in life, glory and growth
in this world;
and if this is not the case,
do understand,
it is what is happening here
that will determine your life in the other world! 108
WHEN RELIANCE WILL GREET YOU
When your everything becomes whole-heartedly engaged
in the maddening zeal to become meaningful
in your Lord, Ideal or Guide,
then and there reliance will greet you! 109
PEACE IN IDEAL-CENTEREDNESS
When everything you have
is based on your Ideal,
then and there peace will become unshakeable
and will uphold and preserve you! 110
YOUR OWN IDEAL AND ANOTHER’S IDEAL
Do not seek to establish your own Ideal
by slighting another’s Ideal;
but rather acknowledge him
and respectfully demonstrate the agreement
of your own Ideal,—
you will find that all are becoming yours! 111
JAAJAN, THE TEST OF DOUBT AND DEVOTION
If your prema*, devotion or love—
growing profuse in its feeling for the Beloved—
does not become resonant in Jaajan,
consider where and in what corner
doubt is hiding and peering out like a thief;
be careful—
seek it out and become void of doubt,—
your environment will surely be flooded
in the flood of your devotion! 112
*Prema: The supreme form of love for the Divine.’
**Jaajan: Exalting  and uplifting the environment with “pious worship of the Ideal”.

GENUINE LOVE
Another characteristic sign of genuine love is this—
the beloved’s offense
can never cause a deficiency in the attraction
by bringing on ill-will, distress
or vexation! 113
FIRMNESS IN CONFLICTS ADVERSE TO LOVE
If feeling, devotion and love are not indomitable
in conflicts adverse to them,
then it is dubious
whether they were there in the first place! 114
COURAGE ESTABLISHING WELL-BEING AND PROGRESS
If courage
with steady perception
spurns, resists and destroys
what is opposed to life and growth,
and thus is naturally efficient
in establishing progress along with well-being
for self, environment  and the world,—
it may be called true courage! 115
HESITATION IN DOUBT
Where doubt is smiling,
hesitation is normal! 116
VALOR IN IDEAL-CENTEREDNESS
As much as your life becomes whole-heartedly dedicated
to the Ideal,
so much will strength, courage and valor
offer you ovation! 117
THE HERO
One for whom enthusiastic uphill effort is normal,
through whose courage, skill and efficiency
chaos and error are converted
into order and rightness,
who diminishes and destroys that which withers
life, glory and growth,
and thus establishes becoming,—
he alone is a hero! 118
SELF-ESTABLISHMENT THROUGH ESTABLISHING OTHERS
Remember—
to establish others’ life, glory and growth
is the only way of achieving
your own life, glory, growth and establishment,—
but actually doing that,
not only thinking about it, talking about it,
and wanting it!
If there is an error in this,
all your efforts, all your wishes, all your works
will end in error! 119
? WHY THE ENVIRONMENT SEEMS UNSUITABLE
Whenever one thinks that his environment
is not suitable for him,
it is sure that his service and resources
are not so great, or not so well-adjusted,
as to make the environment’s life and growth
exuberant
and thus render it beneficial! 120
STRONG WEAKNESS
As for the strong one who can make the weak weaker—
the greater his weakness of strength,
the more he makes weakness strong! 121
GENUINE AND FOOLISH HUMILITY
Foolish humility makes man base;
genuine humility exists
where, keeping one’s nature and honor unharmed,
it establishes truth;
and the meaning of truth is
that which makes man’s life and growth
exuberant in well-being! 122
THE FLY-LIKE MAN
Be careful of “the fly-like man”!
However good the things you do may be,
however good the things you say may be,
discarding every bit of it,
and taking just what is necessary
to make the bad thrive,
he spoils others in the environment;
the remedy for this—
if such a thing has happened—
is to be cautious and confront him,
or to tactfully persuade him! 123
THE BEE-LIKE MAN
Another kind of man is “the bee-like man”;
there is no great excess of them in the world;
their nature is such that however ugly anything may be,
they rightly understand how much of it,
or what portion of it,
is sweet like honey,
and in collecting that they are second to none;
even if you get stung, seek them out;
if you find any,
you will get such nourishment from them
as to fill your life and mind
with honey-sweetness;
if you desire it, be on the lookout! 124

POVERTY IMPOVERISHED
No harm if you are poor;
but don’t be deprived of the wealth of your character—
be not at all forsaken by service, sympathy, fulfillment of needs,
skillfulness, efficiency, protectiveness,
true expansiveness and the like;
you will see how impoverished poverty becomes
and how it flees away to parts unknown! 125
UNMANLINESS IN MAN’S OFFERING HIMSELF TO WOMAN
Whenever unmanliness becomes the boon companion
of a man,
only then can a man implore a woman
or offer himself to a woman;
on the other hand,
it is for woman to offer herself to a man,
and this is the distinctive characteristic
of woman! 126
BROTHERHOOD THAT DISREGARDS THE SUPERIOR
Be careful of the feeling of brotherhood
which does not know how to look up to the superior,
and moreover, neglecting the superior,
itself wants to be looked up to,—
it is the progenitor of baseness! 127
THE MESSENGER OF DEATH
One who asks for more
without suitably nourishing that from which
he derives nourishment
is the messenger of death!
Be careful of him on both accounts! 128
EGOISTIC SLIGHTING MAKES ONE KING FOR A DAY
Whenever your capability, efficiency or skillfulness
want to establish themselves
by humiliating, denying and slighting
another’s capability, efficiency
or skillfulness,
that is when you are being boastful and egoistic;
and the more you act in this manner,
the more your ability will make you
king for a day,
and have you ride around the streets
on a donkey!*
*This refers to the Hindu Holy custom of dressing someone
as king to serve as center of pranks while riding a donkey. 129
THE EMPEROR OF MAN’S LIFE
When the small or lowly come to you,
let them not feel at all that they are small or lowly;
rather, through your association and help
let them see before them the wide royal road
which leads a person easily to greatness and wisdom
if he takes to it and travels on it,
and let this be natural to you!
You will find that you turn out to be
an emperor in people’s lives! 130
THE AROUSING OF SYMPATHY
If the hunger to stay alive and achieve growth
did not make man restlessly eager,
then it is doubtful whether anyone
would be helpful to anyone at the time of need;
if someone comes to you,
do not depress his living and growing
by talking of sorrows;
rather, do and say what will inspire and uplift him;—
you will find that constant talk of sorrows
will not arouse anyone’s sympathy;—
man’s spontaneous sympathy will greet you;
people will be unwilling to bear that you should have
even a little sorrow,
and become whole-heartedly eager to allay it! 131
HUMILIATING THE WRONG-DOER
Do spurn sin or wrong-doing,
but do not hate the sinner or wrong-doer;
if you do so, you will see—
as you have hated,
as you have humiliated the wrong-doer,
the hating and humiliating will take form,
and expose and catch hold of you in the same way,
and insult, ridicule, and oppress you
and make you hated;
be especially careful about your thoughts
and behavior! 132
THE STEALER OF FAULT-FINDING EYEGLASSES
One who knows how to see people as bad,
seldom comes in contact with
the thief who steals
the eyeglasses used for fault-finding! 133

INJURY BY HATRED
If ever out of hatred for someone
you have caused some kind of injury,
at once free him from it
through service, sympathy and attention,
and thus establish him in well-being;
otherwise that causing of injury because of hatred
will so injure you and your world
that though you cry shame on fate hundreds of times,
you will not find the path—
you will see! 134
CLEANSING FAULTS WITH FAULTS
If one wants to clean up faults
by collecting faults,
and scrubbing faults with faults,—
no need to worry—
his fault will be polished up very well;
the misfortune of being deprived of fault
will not have to bear his company. 135
IN SUFFERING OR IN PEACE
When suffering or peace
do not relieve or uplift people’s minds,
then they attack the environment
like disease-bearing flies
and engender evil activities! 136
GREATNESS THROUGH PURSUIT OF DHARMA
Do understand—
whoever has become great in any area
has pursued the Dharma of becoming so
in that area,
and that is why he is great;
and one who has not done so
has become great
only in the expansion of remorse! 137
EVER-SICKLY GLORY
If one’s sense of dignity is brittle,
his glory is ever-sickly. 138
PROGRESS PURSUES ONE WHO ESTABLISHES THE IDEAL
Whatever you do
for the establishment of your Ideal,
in a way that no injury of any kind
comes upon another,
progress with various kinds of presentations,
eager to offer congratulations,
will surely pursue you
in order to offer itself to you—
know it for certain! 139
TRUE HEROISM—IN SUBDOING DIFFICULTIES
When you see that obstacles can no longer
intimidate you,
rather you are able to straighten out obstacles in such a way
that they help you develop,
then only are you strong;
when your understanding adorns your character in this way,
then only will nature give you
a real hero’s reception! 140
INDOOR HEROISM
When one’s heroism and ability
are vigorously expressed before womenfolk,
when it comes to the field of practicality
in the outdoor world,
it is sure to fade away and languish
in the hot rays of the sun! 141
INJURING THE IDEAL IN A POSE OF HUMILITY
If you neglect efficiency,
and with a pretense of humility
entertain the feeling of being a servant,
devotee or son,
the Ideal or Guide is actually established in lowness;
what truer means than this is there
for injuring him? 142
GRACE
To receive Grace means that
the opportunity for doing or serving
is unrestricted;
and if one gets that,
the path to achievement
spontaneously becomes unrestricted! 143
HUSBAND AND WIFE ONLY FOR SEX
Mere lust can never make anyone
a true husband or wife,
and never could! 144
HARMFUL LUST AND ANGER
Lust, anger and the like
are harmful
when they are hindrances to the establishment
of your Ideal,
and when they depress and injure
the life and growth of your environment! 145
THE WITCHY CALL OF LUSTFUL YEARNING
Whenever you find that you are falling away
from the company of the Superior, the Lord,
or the Ideal,
and if you do go near them
you don’t feel well,
and in spite of your intention,
the pull of their association
does not attract you,—
know for sure—
the witchy call of lust
or vain imagining
is entrancing you like a fool
and arousing your passionate crave,
enveloping the path of progress
in the darkness of distraction,
and filling it with senseless cracked-brain
emotion
through the futile arrogance
of bewildering thought;
thus it is throttling your progress
with its filthy hands;
understand this for sure, be careful,
and if you can,
be off from it! 146
TO THINK OF MOTHER WHEN PULLED BY LUST
Look not in the least with lustful eyes,
nor be the least bit possessed by lustful feeling;
even if you are not given to such evil deeds
in actuality,
by going on in this way
this continuous lustfulness of yours
will weaken your go, character, conduct, behavior,
and attachment,
because thoughts of lust can so master a person’s being
that no other thought can drive them away
and incline your being toward itself;
so despite there being many possibilities and resources
for your progress,
you will not at all be able to catch hold
of success or fruitfulness;
the remedy for this is
to remain at a distance
and to color and delight your feeling and sight
with thoughts of mother;
be aware—if this sort of thing is happening to you,
be careful at once! 147
THE WITCHCRAFT OF LUST
Whenever you see that scatteredness
suddenly comes into the path
of progress or upward go
and has obstructed continuity
or is obstructing it,
generally you can understand without a doubt
that the reason it has happened or is happening
is the lustful inclination to women;
generally it happens this way to men,
and the more of it there is,
the more imperious is the downward drag;
but in the case of women,
it generally happens in the same form also,
as long as they are not in direct contact
with any superior,
and so are weighed down in the moat
of imagination
with emotional effusiveness of thoughts;
but when there is voluntary direct contact
(with a superior)
an expansion of progress or gradual upward go
takes place,
resembling that
of the one with whom there is contact;
move on, understanding yourself well! 148
DEBASEMENT OF LINEAGE THROUGH LASCIVIOUSNESS
If you are not Ideal-centric
but lustfully centered on woman as sex-object,
you will find that your offspring very soon
is deprived of your heredity
and reduced to brutishness;
and the more given to base feelings you are,
the more this is so,
because it is this sexual desire
which bends your existence down
to make it sow the seeds of life;
if you want well-being for your children and yourself,
then be careful even now! 149
THE WEAK-NERVED AND LUSTFUL ARE DISREGARDFUL
One characteristic sign
of the weakness of nerves and lustful craving,
which go along with the stale feelings
of those who are born out of meanness,
is that they cannot bow in reverence;
and where there is no reverence,
wisdom there is heedless. 150
FOOLISHNESS IN GREED FOR ENJOYMENT
Greed for enjoyment,
making one foolish in activity,
deprives one of real enjoyment;
if you want—
be elevated, unfettered and dedicated to activity;
greeted by enjoyment, you will find
that you are ever delighted! 151
CHARACTERISTICS OF MAN AND WOMAN
Man is man because of his manly characteristics,
and woman is woman because of her womanly characteristics;
when a man becomes infatuated with a woman
and wholly given to a woman,
and wants to adorn himself with everything womanly,
then the death of manliness in man
starts advancing gradually;
maintaining unrestrained wild hopes and expectations,
tossing and turning
in dense foolishness and darkness,
obliterating himself,
the man is melted away in a slippery go;
again, when the woman does not foster the growth of man,
when she neglects her own distinctive characteristics,
picks up the manner and gestures of man,
and wants to make herself into a man,
then womanliness, converted to ghoulishness,
reaches out its weak, lean, depressed,
intemperate arm
and becomes hideous in futility;
giggling in flaunt and hatred
with uncontrollable laughter,
it ends up in endless misery! 152
DISTINCTIVE CHARACTERISTICS IN EDUCATION
The kind of education
through which the distinctive characteristics of a person
are augmented, elevated and nourished,
is irresistibly necessary for life;
so the system of education should be such
that a person develops continuously in distinctive characteristics
and thus becomes progressive and unobstructed;
that education, by fostering the growth of life and society,
can make one a traveler to immortality! 153
EDUCATION IGNORING DISTINCTIVENESS
To propose an education
which oversteps distinctive characteristics
and to castrate life
are the same thing! 154
DEVOTION TO IDEAL IN EDUCATION
The first ingredient of education is the Ideal;
realization is there in the Ideal;
and by regard, association, inquiry, service, behavior
and worship,
to take the light of the Ideal’s realization
from him,
to realize it and reflect it in one’s character
is real education! 155
EDUCATION WITHOUT PERCEPTION
The very purpose of education
is to realize the knowledge or vision of another
by bringing it into one’s own perception;
and however excellent and immediate the realization is,
the knowledge will be likewise;
if education does not enter into your perception,
then what are you
but an ox burdened with things remembered? 156
COLORING CHARACTER THROUGH IDEAL-CENTRIC EDUCATION
Education that is inspired by envy, spite or inferiority
can touch life and character very little,
although it may reign over
a disorderly and unruly assemblage of resources;
but the education that begins
from an exuberance of devotion and love
for the Lord, the Ideal, or the Beloved,
actually affects life and character
and thus colors one’s very heredity! 157
PRACTICAL EDUCATION
If you want to be really educated,
depend on practical doing,
and taking your stand on this doing,
pursue theory;
you will find that you need not be foolish
in your knowledge. 158
DEVOTION IN THE ACQUISITION OF KNOWLEDGE
And knowledge can be acquired
in various conditions and in various ways,
depending on place, time, person and temperament;
but in all conditions
and within everyone
devotion must be there! 159
THE WAY TO MAKE OTHERS UNDERSTAND
Do not try to make one understand
through what he doesn’t know;
rather, making a way through what he knows,
try to take him to what he doesn’t know;
and in so doing
your success may touch even his character! 160
INVENTION
Observe well the surroundings of the place
where you are staying;
think and try to find out
what things in it can fulfill the needs of people,
and how so;
you will find that shortly
your mind’s inventive power or discovering power
will  be awakened! 161
BRIGHT RECOLLECTION
When two urges or necessities
attack your mind jointly,
then both of them or one of them
is drowned in the water of confusion;
then even by searching, it cannot be found;
so if you want to keep your recollection bright,
allow urges or necessities to enter your mind
one after another;
if health is good,
recollection will remain bright! 162
EDUCATION IN THE HOUSEHOLD
As I think,
to lead the society or race in the way of progress,
there is a necessity for a form of education
in which there can function easily and unobstructedly
in every household
a laboratory, a cottage industry,
and a garden that can produce
the vegetables needed daily;
and this education is for everyone,
male or female,
in every family! 163
THE TEACHER
If there is anything responsible
for people’s condition in life,
it is the work of a teacher;
the character of the teacher
through the student’s regard
affects him without his knowing it
in such a way that his later life goes on
so directed by it
that he can’t do anything about it;
if the teacher is not eagerly inclined to the Ideal,
if his character is not exuberantly active,
adorned with feelings for the Ideal,
and if it does not open the door of the student’s wishes,
touch his heart,
and thus make him free to progress,
that teaching is the great refuge of anti-Dharma;
there isn’t an iota of doubt about it;
if you want to teach,
do carefully adjust yourself;
otherwise misery, with a crooked smile,
will devour your life and your race,
no doubt. 164
SCIENTIST AND RESEARCH
If you are not pursuing the Ideal,
research for you is nothing but an itch for conjuring;
your incoherent knowledge can never come into order
with what comes before and what follows,
and thus cannot arrive at any significance;
and repeated observation,
taking you on an overgrown path in thinking and doing,
suddenly revealing the glow of a glowworm
and making you lose your way,
can do nothing except to make you more foolish and vagrant
as a scientist;
observe, and test thoroughly;
so if research is really the aim of your life,
then pursue the kind of science that pursues meaningfulness,
since throughout its sequence
it bears a single purpose and vision;
see—you will be blessed and delighted,
no doubt! 165
BRAHMACHARYYA—CONTINENCE
To move in the way
by which a human being becomes established in growth
and thus becomes radiant,
to think, say and do
that by which one becomes animated
in vitality, expansion and growth,
and thus can become virile and strong,—
this may be called true Brahmacharyya*
or continence;
and without doing this,
by only being concerned to control the semen**
with extreme effort in thinking and doing,
one cannot become continent or self-restrained;
moreover, he will have to become hated and blamed
on account of ugly frowning nervous debility;
but such questions cannot even arise
in the mind of one who is truly endowed
with Brahmacharyya—
who is engaged in the thought and work
of the Vast;
and as a result, it is easy and natural
for him to be continent. 166
*Brahmacharyya: literally, conduct which is within Brahma. Brahma
is defined by Sri Sri Thakur as “That which being developed and becoming
everything, yet remains the same.” (Satyanusaran, P. 97)
**Semen: considered as a source of psychic energy.
THE CULTURING (SADHANA) OF LOVE
If you want to love anything or anyone,
then love him, think of him only,
and engage yourself in activity
that accords with so doing;
furthermore, give no indulgence whatsoever
to whatever things are against it;
from this form of thought and conduct
you will see
how your love rolls on like a flood,
swift and overflowing with activity;
you will be satisfied—no doubt. 167

AROUSING THE WILL

If you want to keep your will-power
fit, strong and awakened,
do dedicate it daily to some activity
for accomplishing good for others;
see how quick, dexterous and life-enhancing
your will-power becomes! 168
AWAKENING OF WILL-POWER
Whenever the urge to do something good
comes into your heart,
without obstructing it,
do at once start to materialize it through activity;
you will find that by this practice
your will-power will become lively
within a short time. 169
CONTROLLING BAD HABITS
If you want to give up at all
any bad habit of yours,
or lust, anger or the like,
which tends to weaken and distress you,
at the very moment when the urge for it
is about to engage you in activity,
be off from it,
or at that moment, as you are being off from it,
try to engage that urge
in thought and action that will bring you
well-being;
and continue to do so
as long as that bad habit, lust, anger,
or whatever it is
does not come under your complete control;
you will find,
if your practice this for some time,
you can so control habits or passions
that they will kneel down before you
like servants
and be charmed to obey you;
without doing this,
with the mere thought of giving them up,
you will not at all be able to give them up;
rather you will become more obsessed by them! 170

WHERE TO PLACE RELIANCE AND FAITH

He in whom you have placed everything of your whole life
for as long as you live,
whom you know as the bearer
of your life, expansion and growth,
who is absolute knowledge as known,—
only that or he is the place for your whole-hearted faith;
not being colored by any thing or any person,
apart from him,
and remaining neutral,
as you understand the situation as it stands
before you,
by observing it
with circumspection in your perception
and consideration,
shape your reliance and your behavior
in that situation
accordingly,—
little will you be deceived in the world! 171
LITERATURE
That,
in the attainment, association or discussion
of which
a human being can be established or uplifted
in well-being,
can be called literature. 172
NORMAL BEAUTY THROUGH SINGING AND DANCING
There is seldom found a breath-exercise (Pranayama)
as easy and pleasurable
as singing;
and so delightful an exercise as dancing
is rare;
so dancing and singing
which stimulate good feeling
make life for both woman and man
normal and beautiful. 173
CONTROLLING EVIL
If you can, so control evil
that it becomes productive of good
for you
and if possible, for the environment! 174
ON MARRIAGE
Marriage fulfils two of the major human desires,—
one of them is for upward growth
and the other is for procreation;
inappropriate marriage aggrieves both of these;
be careful!
don’t think of marriage as something to play with—
your life and procreation
are involved in it! 175
THE IMPORTANCE OF WOMAN’S PURITY
A nation takes birth and grows
from woman,
so, as woman is mother of the individual,
she is also mother of the collective;
and the feeling with which this woman
is devoted to a man—
the feeling with which she inspires him—
is the very feeling that comes forth
from the man
and takes birth in the woman;*
so woman is the mother of lives and of the world
because she materializes man and measures** out
his nature;
so, such being the case, do understand—
the progress of mankind
is determined by woman;
that is why the purity, life and growth of the nation
depends on the purity of woman;
so you see how essential for the nation
the purity of woman is! 176
*The idea is that the distinctive feeling which the mother
has for the father becomes the distinctive nature of her
child.(K. B.)
**’Mother’ originates from the Sanskrit word ‘matar’, which became  Latin ‘mater’,
Greek ‘meter’ etc. and the words for ‘mother’ and ‘measure’ come
from the same Sanskrit root! (G. L.)

WOMAN’S RIGHT TO CHOOSE HER HUSBAND

When a woman becomes able to conceive,
at that very time nature empowers her
with the ability to select a man;
and if a woman wants to choose
according to her own wish,
she only can do so then;
otherwise the person whom the parents
accept for their daughter,
considering him superior in all respects,
will be regarded as her husband;
this is the principle prescribed in scripture! 177
SUPPORT IN MARRIAGE
Consider whether he who is to support you
is capable of supporting you in all respects;
what it means to support you in all respects
is by bearing with whatever there is in you,
coming down to you from your forefathers—
including your temperament and characteristics—
and to give it a place in growth and upliftment;
and if this be not the case,
then how can the marriage be successful? 178
MEANINGFUL WIFEHOOD
By forbearing and supporting him,
you can embrace what is superior in all respects;
you are charmed yet awakened in the inducement
to thus forbear and support him, and with him
your tender and exalted feelings are reverent
and free like your long hair when you let it down,—
he is the one whose bride you should be;
you will be esteemed by the community,
you will be pure,
you will be full of glory! 179
IDEALS FOR THE SELECTION OF THE HUSBAND
If the Ideal-centeredness and all-around superiority
of any man
make you humble and reverent
with regard and devotion
and thus fruitful in his service,
if on your lips are songs in his praise
that overflow from your heart,—
you can choose him,
you can give yourself to him;
by becoming his wife
you will be blessed in praise and service—
there is no doubt! 180
THE GOODNESS OF GOOD FORTUNE MANIFEST
Where the man becomes indomitable
to fulfill his Ideal
with presentations of victory, renown and glory,
and where the woman is charmed and follows him
with upholdment, protection, inspiration and service,
there in her the living form of Lakshmi,
the goddess of good fortune,
is manifested! 181
THE AGE FOR MARRIAGE
If there is a difference in age between husband and wife
of at least fifteen to twenty years,
then, as the exuberant life-energy of the wife
inspires the man and levels out,
to a great extent it holds back old age for both;
and uplifting life, enthusiasm and growth,
and enthroning joy, pleasure, happiness and peace,
it makes them possessors of strong children;
so it is conducive to Dharma! 182
DUTIES OF HUSBAND AND WIFE
As the duty of your wife in going on with you
lies in your family, environment and world,
know surely, that your duty in going on with your Ideal
lies in the family, in the environment and in
your world;
if there is any deviation in this,
the result will attack your wife
in respect to her distinctive characteristics,
the way it does so, depending on the kind
of deviation—
and likewise it will turn disastrous
and attack you also in your particular nature
in the same way. 183
THE MANIFESTATION OF GOD
When woman and man,
in the impact both have on each other,
become indomitable and free,
each in his or her own distinctive characteristics,
where the attraction of one for the other,
without stupefying them,
becomes inspired
and whole-heartedly devoted to the Ideal,—
within Prakriti and Purusha* of this kind
God takes form and becomes manifest,
and attracting  individual and world
to the path of expansion,
dispenses the nectar of immortality ! 184
*Prakriti: ”Primordial Nature, which in association with Purusha, creates the universe.”
Purusha also denotes  the soul and Prakriti the Absolute.”

(From The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna) G. L.

DEGRADATION THROUGH FALLING FROM THE IDEAL

As nothing can destroy your devoted wife
if you are there,
just so, if you have your Ideal, Lord or Guide,
and if your unvacillating devotion to him
can keep him fixed within you,
destruction will flee far, far away from you;
you won’t find it even by searching for it!
And if you fall away from this,
misfortune with lolling tongue
will definitely attack you,
and at the same time will devour
your power to be a husband! 185
REJECTED LOVE
Rejected or distressed love
is what primarily invites meanness, brutality
and listlessness!
If anyone has love for you,
do receive and establish him in all respects;
be diligent for his continuous progress;
allow him to be disciplined and free;
but keep a little distance;
do not be so very easily available to him;
but for that, do not reject him;
you will be happy
and make others happy too! 186
SATAN ATTACKS THROUGH OBSESSION WITH WOMEN
Where a man surrenders himself
in the urge to make a woman his most darling beloved,
Satan attacks the society,
using him as his means;
be alert! 187
STRAINED CONTINENCE
Continence which depends only on strained exertion
oftentimes brings on a flood
of unabated wantonness! 188
WELCOMING THE OFFER
If someone wants to entrust herself to you,
taking all kinds of suffering that may come
in giving you support,
as occasions of joy,
and bowing down in regard and devotion,
if she considers it meaningful to do this,
and if that makes you happy
because it is appropriate and within your ability,
and thus inspires you in your Ideal,
do not, under any circumstances,
reject her;
and if there is anything
that could invite the inauspicious,
make her desist and assuage her in such a way
that without being wounded by you
in any way,
she may always remain happy
in devotion and regard! 189
DOWNFALL FROM WANT OF HYPERGAMY*
AND IDEAL EDUCATION
What an inauspicious moment it was
—how did it ever happen?—
when hypergamous inter-varna marriage**
and Ideal-centric education
were struck with illness
and laid waste!
From that time the race, society, and country
started running toward downfall
with unstoppable speed;
turn back—
even now you may have time ! 190
*Hypergamy: marriage of a woman to a man of higher
cultural heredity than her own.
**Inter-varna marriage: marriage between a man and
woman of different varnas, or groupings of people
according to varieties of distinctive characteristics.
VIRTUE IN HYPERGAMY, SIN IN HYPOGAMY
In hypogamy the higher, normal instincts,
being destroyed and despised,
are bound to lower and reduce instincts;
so it materializes the base in a form still weaker,
enfeebling its child
and depriving him of the normal and healthy instincts
of his father and mother;
and that is why it is a sin,
though the parents are of different varnas;
hypergamy,
upholding the higher normal instincts of the man,
being astonished in eager delightful admiration,
can give its child form in expansiveness
in the higher normal instincts
of his father and mother;
that is why,
though the parents are of different varnas,
it is virtuous and pure! 191
DISTORTED LOVE
Where the goal of one’s love
is a woman inflamed with lust,
his neck is generally decked
with a garland of distress. 192
DOWNFALL THROUGH CHOOSING A MAN WITH NO IDEAL
There is superior heredity,
but it is because his ego was wounded
and he became maddened with spite and envy
that he has earned a high position;
and Ideal-centricity has not made him superior
in any respect,
has not made him expansive,
has not made him successful
or given him a good foundation in life;
when it comes to selecting a husband,
remain far away from him,
for such selection cannot give form to the superior
as far as it is possible to do so;
rather, it will demean the heredity
by reducing it to meanness;
move with understanding ! 193
FATHERHOOD ACCORDING TO THE WIFE’S INSPIRATION
Whatever bhava*
your wife’s bhava inspires you with—
and thus inclines you toward,—
it is just that bhava of yours
which will be embodied—
which you will father;
know it for sure! 194
*Bhava: the condition of a person’s whole being
at a given time with some element or elements prominent. (K. B.)
Thakur also referred to ‘bhava” as ‘thought bubble’. (G. L.)

THE WIFE’S BHAVA IS THE CHILD’S MOTHER

If your wife’s exalted bhava
and talks and conversations
make you the more absorbed
in an exalted and inspired bhava,
and if you become inclined to her,
being absorbed in that bhava,
there is no doubt—
your child will be of that nature,
will be that bhava itself;
move on,
taking this into account! 195
SERVICE TO A MALICIOUS WIFE MAKES A DISTRESSED CHILD
If your wife has become malicious toward you,
do not in the least become lustfully inclined to her,
serving her in order to mitigate that malice;
by that, your child will definitely be distressed
in body and mind, and in his life;
there is no doubt about it! 196
FORSAKING THE COMPANY OF A FAULT-FINDING WIFE
If your wife has become fault-finding toward you,
frantic, feeble-minded, morose, wicked, dissatisfied
or the like,
stay away from her,
making proper arrangements for her well-being,
convenience, maintenance and so on,
until, through understanding you well,
she becomes eager for you,
attached to you,
and full of praise for you;
then there is a good chance
that you can be saved from this misfortune
and become sound and strong
in your life, glory and growth! 197
WELL-BEING THROUGH STAYING AWAY FROM A VEXATIOUS WIFE
You may not be contented with your wife—
perhaps you are extremely vexed by her;
be careful—
unless there is an extremely serious reason,
do not punish her in any way;
turn not away from giving her food and clothing
according to your ability
and whatever appropriate pleasure is possible,
nor wound her with unjust behavior;
rather, give up her company and remain at a distance;
in the midst of cares
well-being will serve you—
certainly! 198

DRONE
Where the man
is affected and aroused by the wife,
and wants to be blessed by her,
yet in his arousal
the urge to affect and awaken
the environment and the world
is not awakened,
even if he sprouts wings,
he is certainly a drone! 199
WIFE TO SERVE FATHER AND MOTHER
Be on the lookout
that the first and foremost duty of your wife
is to serve your father and mother
or the earnest well-wishers
by whom you are being nourished;
if she becomes averse to this service,
do not allow her to serve you;
rather, it is better if you do not hanker at all
for your wife’s service;
but there should not be the tiniest flaw
in any possible service to them;
you will see how your future life,
rising beautifully,
shines on you with rosy light! 200
WOMAN MONOGAMOUS, MAN POLYGAMOUS IN NATURE
Temperament lies in the characteristics of the system,
and it governs to a great extent
a person’s perception, thought, character
and conduct;
the characteristic of the man
is to sow the seed of life;
the woman receives it, gives it form,
and sets it growing—
and does this generally for one only
at any one time;
within that same time
a man can sow seed into many;
that is why it is a distinctive characteristic of woman
to be the wife of one man,
and this is the wealth of her soundness of mind;
but the man by his nature carries on his life
with a tendency to be united with many women;
so if your husband,
while remaining exuberant in his Ideal,
and expansive in his character, knowledge
and service,
has more than one wife,
and if that is not harmful to him,
be not saddened, be not jealous;
rather love and take care of him;
you will find that your husband in being with you,
gives you more prevalence in his life—
don’t worry! 201
THE CAPACITY FOR ACCEPTING MORE THAN ONE WIFE
One who is untotteringly for his Ideal,
wholeheartedly sincere in establishing his Ideal,
whose wife can only incline him toward her
by encouraging him,—
only such a man is actually capable of accepting
more than one wife;
otherwise, it can only be expected
that one who has not these qualities
will fall into distress, weakness and dullness
by accepting more than one wife;
so if you want to select a husband,
then select a man who is firm and steady
in the Ideal
even if he has a wife;
you will find meaningfulness! 202
UNITY THROUGH BEING INSPIRED IN ONE
Genuine unity dwells there
where people are practically inspired in one;
and this is a matter of feeling,
not of a display of reasoning;
the feeling or perception produces the reasoning—
reasoning only widens and extends
the path of perception. 203
SOCIETY
Whenever a number of people,
being inspired in one Ideal,
collectively go on establishing his meaningfulness,
then that united community of people
can be called society. 204
IDEAL AND MARRIAGE-BOND—CLUES TO UNITY
There are two main clues
to the progress and unity of the masses;
one is the Ideal,
the other is superior marriage relationships! 205
THE CENTER OF UNITY IN DIVERSITY
The more there are opposing and dissimilar people
finding shelter in you,
and embracing life and growth,
taking you as their all in all,
the more will you be
the center of unity in diversity,
and glory and love will worship you! 206
THE CENTER OF INTEREST FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
When a person becomes blinded by needs,
then alone does he become selfish;
for the purpose of attaching those needed things
to himself
the need creates desire;
again, whenever the desire is fulfilled,
the person attains his self-interest—
or his desire is satisfied—
or he is set free from it;
thus it is seen—
in man there is self-hood,
and for the nourishment of this self-hood
wealth or needed things exist;
and need itself produces lust or desire,
and when the need is attained,
liberation from that desire takes place;
and all these things are for the sake
of man’s self-nourishment!
When one cannot understand
what things go to compose his self-hood,
then erroneous interest
seeks to make his life prosper with nourishment
and growth,
and gathers the materials
for life, nourishment and growth—
by depriving him and depriving his environment;
yet it does not even cast a glance
toward him or them
from whom it collects these materials
of nourishment and growth;
so deprivation and futility follow him
all through his life,
depriving and frustrating him;
if you really want life, nourishment and growth,
make your environment a center of interest;
you will see that deprivation and futility
will follow you no more! 207
EXISTENCE AND DECAY IN THE ENVIRONMENT
Man does not live or grow without environment—
his existence is in his environment;
and if the Ideal of the environment
is not favorable to him,
then decay is very much a possibility! 208
SURRENDERING THE FRUITS OF WORK
To present to others
what is gained by performing activity
and to let them share that
is called genuine surrender of the fruits
of work;
so in surrendering the fruits of work,
they become multiplied in many ways,
and this gives the renouncer
abundance in the fruits of action! 209
LIFELESS SOCIETY
If the society has no Ideal
then it is lifeless and without a go;
so it is finished off in decay! 210
FOUR VARNAS IN THE SOCIAL SYSTEM
Every society
is like a complete system in itself;
and the primary organs of the system are
bipra, kshatriya, boishya and shudra*;
in one way or another
in a society which is alive
and advancing in upliftment
these four types of function surely exist;
and however sound and strong they are,
so much is the upliftment of the society! 211
*Bipra, Kshatriya, Boishya and Shudra: See the following messages for the meanings of
the first three varnas. Shudra means, “Those in whose nature is service for preservation.”
QUALITIES OF A BRAHMIN (BIPRA)
He or they who make the worship of the Lord
and attachment to him
untottering,
with study, research, teaching,
contemplation and propagation of him and his worship,
and with giving and receiving,
who serve the life, renown and growth
of all individuals,
perceiving them as various forms of themselves,
who thus dwell in the feeling of Brahma or the Vast,—
he or they are Brahmin;
if you want to be meaningful,
try to be Brahmin,
and do that in such a way that Brahmin hood
permeates your nature and character,
so that people may perceive you
as the materialized form of Brahma! 212
QUALITIES OF A KSHATRIYA*
He or they who pursue knowledge, research and the like
with worship and devotion to the Lord,
who save creatures from injury and pain
and heal them,
who have dedicated their lives in a practical way
to service of life, glory and growth,—
he or they may be called kshatriya;
if you want valor,
then with adherence gladly take up
the qualities of a kshatriya! 213
*Kshatriya: This encompasses the protective class, such as the police force, armed forces
etc., doctors, lawyers, administrators and the like, whose purpose it is to protect society.
QUALITIES OF A BOISHYA*
He or they who are Ideal-centric
and pursue knowledge, research and the like
with worship and devotion,
who earn wealth and resources
by service in fulfillment of people’s needs,
for the purpose of bettering and establishing
that worship and devotion,
and for its development
give for the progress of humans,
and thus acquire meaningfulness,—
he or they are genuinely boishya;
if through your establishment of the Ideal
you want to prosper yourself
by making people prosper
through service to them,
then turn not away from worship of the qualities
of a boishya ! (*Boishya: Business class) 214
BRAHMINS DEDICATED TO CULTURE
Remember,
the Brahmins dedicated to culture
who depend on offerings for their livelihood*
are not now and never were
greedy for wealth or resources;
they are worshippers, servants and directors
of knowledge, worship, service to people
and protection,
and their wealth and resources lie in this;
so they are the masters of the race! 215
*the offerings are gifts given them by people out of regard for them and
appreciation for their service.
THE TWICE-BORN* ALWAYS TO INFUSE THE IDEAL
One of the primary day-to-day activities
of the twice-born
is to infuse the Ideal into the environment;
if you have even an iota of devotion to the Ideal,
then do not forsake this tendency;
enjoyment and growth
will be your constant companion ! 216
*Twice-born: Brahmins, kshatriyas and boishyas are referred to as twice-
born because, generally in their youth, they perform a ritual which is
considered as a second birth.
WHEN SOCIETY’S LIFE IS WOUNDED
Just as one cannot commit suicide
unless one is terribly senseless,
so also, unless senselessness is stupendous,
this system of the Varnas and their functions
cannot be torn asunder;
in whatever limb a poison starts working,
it is certain that life is endangered;
likewise, whatever be the varna
through which wanton disorder enters,
the life of society will be agitated and wounded—
this is very certain;
and as it is with the individual,
so it is with the collective! 217
THE SLIPPERY WAY OF SATAN
The endowment of power
which does not relieve and satisfy a person
and make his growth prosper,
is the dark and slippery road of Satan! 218
GUIDANCE BY THE INFERIOR
One who wants to purify inferiority
by being guided by the inferior,
will become perfected
in pure inferiority,—
is there any need to ponder over it? 219
THE PATH OF ATTAINMENT
Know for sure—
if you have any want,
then something is to be done,
something by doing which the thing you want
can be had;
and without doing that,
the hope of getting is nothing but a frustration!
Whenever your doing
does not follow the way by which there can be
attainment,
whatever you want to get,
and whatever the manner in which you want
to get it,
nothing at all ever comes of that doing;
so I say, if you want at all,
then adjust your doing
actually
in such a way that attainment
will surely come about! 220
THE RESULT OF FAULT-FINDING
Unfailing fault-finding
situates life in the enigma of failure! 221
THE COURSE OF SUCCESS
If you want at all to do something,
think out, as far as possible,
how the work which is to be done
can be done,
and what is to be used for it,
taking the sequence into account;
then examine all this
and see how it accords with your condition
and ability;
and along with this,
observe thoroughly
how easily, in how short a time,
and with how little exertion of energy,
it can be made possible;
and bringing the obstacles to it under control
in any way possible,
or making them favorable,
or paying them no heed,
bring the means of doing into your scheme
and start in with swiftness
and tremendous momentum;
success will serve you like a handmaiden,—
is there any doubt about it? 222
THE ELIXIR OF LIFE
The elixir of life—
that which is to be enjoyed,
that is, the thing by which life can be enjoyed,
is attachment which ascends,
unbroken, never stopping,
keeping one alone before it! 223
WHAT IS WORTH ACCOMPLISHING IN LIFE
And if there is anything worth accomplishing,
it is this:
as my attachment and interest
become properly adhered to the Ideal
so that the discord and scattering tendency
of the complexes and passions
are destroyed,
and as normal wisdom becomes meaningful
in him,—
before all my faculties (of sense, action and mind)
he stands forth as God! 224
WHAT IS WORTH ATTAINING
And if there is anything attainable,
it is conscious memory
which, penetrating life and death,
takes one to what ensues! 225
ETERNAL UNPEACEFULNESS
To remove upward-impelling restlessness
of ascending attachment
which has One alone before it,
is to be limited and becalmed in inertness
in a scattered fashion,
and thus to embrace and kiss eternal unpeacefulness! 226
DETERIORATION IN HEREDITY BRINGS SLAVERY
Whenever heredity is deformed or destroyed,
in whatever way that may happen,
the inventive capacity of the intellect
starts to become shattered and depressed;
then a person’s necessity of staying alive
ends up in slavery;
keep watch! 227

SLAVERY THROUGH FORSAKING THE IDEAL

Do understand—
it is slavery
to do something in which you have to sacrifice
your Ideal
for the sake of getting your due from it! 228
HARMING HEREDITY BY FALLING AWAY FROM THE IDEAL
When purpose, without nurturing the Ideal,
does something for self-nourishment,
through which a falling-away from the Ideal
may take place, or does take place,
that deed, that conduct, or that thought
injures heredity;
you can move on
if you will take a little care! 229
HONORARIUM
Whenever you are invited by anyone
to help or serve him without sacrificing your Ideal,
and as a result of that,
for his own satisfaction,
he gives you anything,
or helps you with anything of any kind
which is favorable to your life and go,—
in plain language
this is called an honorarium;
and in this kind of doing
heredity generally does not become distorted! 230
THE DEPRIVATION IN SIN
Know as sin
that which deprives you of life, glory and growth,
brings in ignorance, meanness and weakness,
and thus makes you a traveler
on the road to death! 231
HEALTH IN DHARMA
The fundamental basis of Dharma
is to live and grow,
and for that
the first and foremost necessity is health;
do, move and be unobstructed in your go! 232
INFUSION OF FEELING THROUGH FOOD
Seers, scientists and learned men say
that rice or other food
carries in it even the mental condition
of the one who serves it;
this being so,
if I am to receive food from someone,
it should be done in such a way
that I can receive higher feelings;
isn’t it so? 233
DISAGREEABLE FOOD BREAKS THE HEALTH
Be aloof from the kind of place, person and food
which brings on hatred, aversion, uneasiness,
or unsteadiness of mind;
by such food one’s health is easily broken down; beware! 234
APPETITE MEASURES THE AMOUNT OF FOOD
If you wish to be energetic and diligent,
do not renounce hunger;
hunger makes the food that is eaten
suitable for nourishing you,
and this nourishment is the fuel for energy! 235
NON-EXCITING AND NON-DEPRESSING FOOD
Without reason do not eat in a way
that brings improper excitation or depression;
eat in a way that banishes the uneasiness and depression
of hunger
and thus makes you sound and brings you well-being;
then you can easily be active! 236
THE EFFECT OF MIND AND ENVIRONMENT ON HEALTH
As health can control the mind,
so also can the mind bring health under control;
however pure, sound and strong your mind is,
your health also to a large extent
will follow after it;
and for this matter of attaining health
it is necessary to keep watch
over the purity of your environment;
there is hardly anything that can
vitiate health and mind
as much as an impure environment can; be careful! 237
SICKNESS
When attacked by illness,
as far as possible, stay away from people;
be careful that no one gets infected by you;
let those who are engaged in serving and attending you,
not mix with others
until they have purified and cleansed themselves;
and in lying down, sitting, speaking and so on
be very careful that due to these
your illness does not infect others;
in this way do not remain stricken with illness! 238
UNWELLNESS FROM MENTAL IMPURITY
Generally, many kinds of illness
originate from mental impurity;
mental purity is the first and foremost necessity
to rescue health from the hands of illness;
that is why seers
introduced the practice of penance! 239

BEFITS OF PENANCE
Penance means going into one’s consciousness,
that is, to remove the mental cause of illness
by pursuing it and discovering it,—
and by controlling and exercising discipline over
food, medicine and thought,
to become sound and healthy;
so, as I think,
at least once a year if the Chandrayan system of penance*
or something similar in its place
is observed exactly,
that is like ambrosia for health and life ! 240

*In the Chandrayan system of penance, once a day one handful

of cooked rice is taken on the first day of the moon’s waxing, two
handfuls on the second day, and so on, increasing one handful
daily until full moon, then decreasing one handful daily as the moon
wanes, ending up with one handful on the thirtieth day.

NATURE’S SIGNAL OF ILLNESS

Know yourself to be sound and healthy
when there is no question for you
about your existence and tendency to work;
that is to say, the sign of soundness and wellness
is enthusiasm and inclination to work;
and if there is deterioration in these
you will find that your attention
will spontaneously be drawn
to your body and your well-being;
and this is nature’s signal
that you are advancing toward illness,—
take care, be aware! 241

EXERTION FOR ATTAINING HEALTH

As when one eats
one must clear the bowels,
so also, to receive nourishment
it is absolutely essential
to clear out the substances thrown off
by the body;
and for this purpose, appropriate exertion—
at least until one perspires sufficiently—
is invaluable and like ambrosia for health! 242

SLEEP
To be conscious is the blessing of God
and this consciousness is life;
do not invite sleep needlessly;
sleep only enough
to make you more enkindled! 243

INTOXICATION
In using intoxicants
the system becomes excited
in such an unrestrained fashion
that when this excitement is lacking
the system becomes excessively depressed,
and thus life proceeds toward decay;
so the habit of intoxication
dominates life in such a way
that there is no alternative
but to use the intoxicant again and again;
as a result of this
the sway of decay over life
becomes strong very quickly;
for this reason, taking intoxicants is a sin,
a great sin;
if you want rescue,
ignoring intoxicants,
seek out nourishing excitement
and become very interested in that ! 244
NIGGARDLINESS
Do not be niggardly*;
rather determine to do;
niggardliness weakens one
and depresses the environment also;
as a result weakness increases and attacks ! 245
*Niggardly: reluctant to give or spend; stingy, miserly.
PARASITIC AND PROVIDENT LIFE
If one wants to live off others,
but does not become eagerly concerned
to nourish others by providing for them,
is there any way to avoid being sure
that hunger will eat him up? 246
CONSTANT NEWNESS IN ENJOYMENT
A person can never enjoy himself
until the environment,
responding in a way that gives him enjoyment,
makes him flourish;
if you want to make your life meaningful
and abundant in enjoyment,
apply whatever you have for the sake of making someone
prosperous and established;
see—you will be able to enjoy your life very much
as it remains new in ever-new ways! 247
FRUITFULNESS IN WELCOMING THE NEEDY
As far as possible, provide advantageous circumstances
to one afflicted by want
according to his ability and yours;
see that he is pleased, that he is welcomed,
and that he may not at all feel repentant,
thinking he has been cheated;
seldom will you meet with unsuccess! 248
THE GURU AND THE PEOPLE IN ACHIEVING SUCCESS
If you have not become inundated
in worship of the guru and the people,
then consider to what extent
your worship, vows and penance
can result in success for you;
so the rule of the scriptures is
that the worship of the guru and Ganesh (Lord of the People),
that is, the deities dedicated to the people’s
well-being,
precedes all other worship, vows and penance ! 249
PROFIT IN BUSINESS THROUGH FULFILLING NECESSITIES
If your service can make your profit
interlinked through and through
with the fulfillment of the necessities
of those afflicted with need
in a way appropriate to their capacity,
through behavior, care and sympathy,
then take up business;
otherwise it is mere impertinence ! 250
BEHAVIOR IN BUSINESS
If you want to engage in business,
first learn behavior
in such a way that people get well-being and satisfaction
through your service to them
and your way of welcoming them;
and to imbibe this in character
is the prime basis of success ! 251
IN BUSINESS BE THE GUIDE TO PROGRESS
Through inquisitiveness, experience, activity, adherence
and the like,
acquire such knowledge
that you become the guide
to what contributes to people’s unfailing progress;
you will find, there will be no occasion
for loss in business ! 252
THE CHARACTER DESIRABLE FOR BUSINESS
Extensiveness in proclamation*,
efficiency and skill in work,
service and welcoming tendency in behavior—
this type of behavior is the one desirable in business;
implant it in your character—
you will become elevated in success ! 253
*Extensiveness in proclamation: Advertising !
BUSINESS FOR ABUNDANCE FOR THE IDEAL
If out of the wish to let your Ideal have abundance
you have acquired such knowledge—
and if that acquirement has colored your character
in such a way that your sweet sympathetic behavior and care
fulfill those who are ridden with need
and make them expansive,
so that profit flows out from it like a blessing,
and adherence, efficiency and profitable management
are regulated with patience
and can invite growth,
only then may you enter into the field of business
courageously;
the roar of your conch-horn*
will shake the throne of the goddess of fortune
and establish it in you!
*Conch-horn: horn made from conch-shell used in Indian
religious ceremonies. 254
INDEPENDENT BUSINESS
Independent business means to make
self-nourishment spontaneous
through service to the environment;
so, for one who cannot make success spontaneous
by his service,
or does not know how to do this,
independent business
is only a ridiculous and frustrating affair. 255
PRAISE AND FLATTERY
In expectation of gain,
one’s own perception being unimpressed
or under the influence of a contrary idea,
and inspired by self-interest,
to give credit uncontrollably
or to delineate good qualities,
is flattery;
and it is praise when,
charmed by good qualities,
the hear wells up with satisfaction
in extolling someone’s good qualities;
so flattery makes both narrow,
but praise broadens, adorns and beautifies
the heart—
and does that for both! 256
RUINING WORK BY HOPING FOR RESULTS
When the hope for results
or the inducement of getting
makes the work slack,
the chuckle of fruitlessness befools you
and wants to finish you off
with its unrestrained affection! 257
THE LAWYER
If the accused or the accuser,
whoever it may be,
having fallen into trouble, surrenders to you,
in the hope of being saved,
let rescuing him be your intense and unassailable interest,
and in as many ways possible,
working it out in your mind,
surmounting the difficulties,
through adjustment,
bring it into accord with law;
hold him up from depression
with hope and encouragement;
be very careful that he is not depressed
in unjust excess of expenditure;
being the priest of justice and peace for the environment,
be always ready for service;
be not interested in wealth, but in rescuing;
be not vexed;
be content with what you get
from relieving and uplifting,
and so make the person happy;
move on in this way;
you will find that wealth and glory
will surely kneel down welcoming you ! 258

RESULT THE SYCOPHANT OF WORK

If work is dear to one,
the getting of results is his sycophant*! 259
*Sycophant: self-seeking, servile flatterer.

GIVING ONE'S WORD

If you have given anyone your word in any affair,
do not fail in the least
to do according to your word;
yet if you cannot accomplish it,
let him know as soon as possible,
and delight him with humility and modesty;
and be vigilant;
if there is any way,
help him sincerely as far as possible in that way;
so if you have to give word to anyone,
take well into account
whether it is something within your normal capacity;
then give your word ! 260

THE PHYSICIAN
If you want to be successful,
totally doing away with vanity,
being strict with watchful and normal consideration,
be diligent in remaining affectionate;
let irritation, slander, impatience
or lack of sympathy
have not the least sway over you;
let hope, encouragement, happiness in exertion,
and good behavior
resonate with sympathy through and through
your character;
let healing of illness
be your supreme interest;
as long as you are not satisfied
with the cure of your patient,
think it out,
maintaining vigilance in examination
and discussion;
do not give the least occasion for your mind
to lag behind in attendance
or the neglect being anxious
about irritation and pain;
be particularly careful that, when treating patients,
money does not confuse you in the least;
and be careful that no expectation nor discouragement
makes you fall off from taking care of
the patient's backbone and brain,
lungs and heart,
and digestive and excretory system;
remember,
that the vehicle of life
is in your Lord or God;
in mind, activity, and conduct,
bringing Him in, remain alert to implant Him
through your medicine, regimen and nursing
in your afflicted and dejected ones;
satisfaction, glory and wealth will worship you
before they do anything else ! 261

SUCCESSFUL NURSING
With eagerness and sympathy,
listening to the person's sufferings and necessities,
make your nursing meaningful,
then realizing his condition through sympathy,
removing his suffering and supplying his necessities,
make life and growth abundant in progress;
and this alone is called service;
see that your service is crowned
with meaningfulness! 262

HAMMERING SERVICE
When nursing does not make service prominent,
then service generally is baffled
and thus becomes cumbersome;
so without knowing the sufferings and needs,
do not hammer in your service;
be not futile, nor make others so ! 263

THE PROBLEM OF UNEMPLOYMENT

As earning and eating are necessary in order to stay alive,
so also doing is necessary in order to earn;
ascertain your own and your environment¹s needs
and certainly do something or other
that will fulfill it,
and you will find that by this
the path of doing
day by day becomes wider and clearer;
if this can be implanted in character
the unemployment problem cannot be frightening
or strike unbearable terror in you ! 264

INCURRING DEBT
If you are to borrow,
then be ready to repay it,
even if you must cut down on your essentials
to do so;
otherwise the path of acquiring your nourishment
is sure to become blocked ! 265

THE WAY FOR THE UNEMPLOYED TO EARN

If you want to stay alive by having a morsel or two,
then earn;
and if you are to earn,
you must look to the needs of the environment;
if your doing can serve the fulfillment of these needs,
then your earning, in its expansion,
will become actually meaningful;
before doing this,
if you keep fixing your attention on
the imaginary screen of getting money,
there surely will be no earnings
and as you move you will surely stumble;
and if you proceed,
having thrown off the blinding veil of money
in the urge to serve necessities,
know for sure that money will certainly welcome you;
so being humble and maintaining keen attention
in the service of the environment
keep your doing always enkindled;
what will the terror of unemployment
do to you ? 266

GIVING A LOAN
Give a loan with awareness of one's capacity;
see that even if you do not get it back,
that this does not taunt your tolerance;
but be careful
as far as you can
not to turn anyone away!
whenever he may need you
expectedly or unexpectedly;
you will see‹
you will be prosperous, you will be successful,
you will be saved from unexpected suffering ! 267

268, 269, 270

EXPRESSING AN OPINION
Do not oppose others' views;
if you have to express your own opinion,
do it humbly;
you will seldom have to encounter enmity ! 271

SUCCESS IN CONVERSATION
When you are going to say something about some affair
to someone,
if your regard for him
finds a way into him
in such a way that your thought uplifts him so
that he becomes curious and eager,
and then in hearing you, if he becomes content
and satisfied and attracted to you
as your words have considerably encouraged
and delighted him,‹
then only both you and he will enjoy this mutually
and achieve your end;
otherwise bafflement is natural ! 272

IN HIGH POSITION
If you want to remain secure
in greatness or in high position,
you must make people great,
put them in high position,
however ungrateful to you they may be for this;
but know surely—
this ingratitude of theirs
will again establish you in high position;
be a bit alert, move on, don't worry ! 273

KINDNESS TO DISTORTION
To be kind to distortion
thickens the distortion ! 274

INGRATITUDE
In as many ways as you can,
however you can,
do not forget at all
to make adjustments to effect the well-being
of the one due to whom you have become
prosperous, nourished and uplifted
in life and glory,
no matter how little it is
that you have got of these things;
and to forget this, or not to do it, or to do the contrary
is called ingratitude;
almost always when a sin comes
to bring about a person's destruction,
it does not come alone,
without inviting this one to come along
with it;
beware of this in all respects;—
there is hardly any other sin so terrible
as this one
to jeopardize and baffle your life in ruination ! 275

HIDDEN INGRATITUDE
When one neglects the benefactor
and follows him through whom the benefactor
has done good to him,
he is exposed to the taunts of heaven
and embraces dense darkness ! 276

CALAMITY OF VANITY
One whose self-esteem is easily broken,
who can find faults just by thinking,
who is satisfied by digging out, thinking about,
discovering, bringing out
from the environment
corroboration of injustice as seen by him
or greater injustice,
who in his own time of trouble
wants help from people,
yet considers it a sad fate
to be humble and grateful,
who in others' time of trouble is weak and incapable
and satisfied with slander and lack of sympathy,
whose compassion is like ridicule—
since he is so expert at alienating people
and thus at being destroyed in distress
and calamity,
can anyone be a greater hero at it than he ? 277

THE ADAMANTINE* BAR TO ABUNDANCE—

WASTING SOMETHING ENTRUSTED
If anyone, depending on you and trusting you,
has entrusted you with any work,
or for its accomplishment has given money
or capacity,
and you, for your own interest,
or any other reason,
waste it,
then know for sure—
you have closed the adamantine door
to the path of future abundance,
because the propensity which wounded your reliability
and caused the squandering,
will make abundance for you a matter of nonsense,—
know it for sure;
again and again I say—have care even now!
*Adamantine: Too hard to cut, break or pierce. 278

THE FOG OF SLANDER

What will the lamp of wisdom do
in the fog of slander?
Fire the blank gunshots of ignoring it ! 279

UNCALLED-FOR INTEREST
When someone is engaged with another in conversation,
to go there without being called,
or to become very interested,
or to eavesdrop,
and thus to pursue that talk,
and to accept downfall
by causing wrong and injury
are one and the same thing ! 280

CONTROLLING CONSPIRACY
If you find out that a conspiracy against you
is going on,
whatever the reason for it may be,
think it out and ascertain
who has become displeased and angry with you,
why it happened and how;
at once go to him and make him calm, pleased
and satisfied,
and along with that, think further,
with calculation,
of someone powerful who loves him
and has the capacity to help him
(whose oppressiveness may be painful
or overpowering to you)
—he may or may not be connected with the affair—
who will go to him
and make him attracted to you,
enthusiastic about you,
pleased and satisfied with you,
so that he helps you in every way,
or at least does not nurture any adverse feeling
and does not remain unsatisfied with you—
in a word, so that he becomes harmless to you;
you will find that conspiracy,
of whatever form,
will not be able to do anything to you ! 281

PURE DESIRE AND CORRUPT DESIRE

If desire (kama) is not corrupted,
its goodness—
that is, its propitiousness to life and growth—
and its beauty—
that is, its adorability,
cannot be vilified
without cause or for an indirect cause;
wherever it is found,
yet there is crooked sympathy in affairs relating
to women,
understand surely—
it is often the foul stench of corrupted desire ! 282

THE WAY TO HELL

One thing suffices
for a person's ill-fate and hell;—
that is ingratitude to the Ideal ! 283

THE WAY TO UPLIFTMENT

A life that is whole-heartedly given to the Ideal,
however low or mean it may be,
will not be deprived of the light of upliftment;—
this is decidedly certain ! 284

IMAGINARY INDEPENDENCE
The Ideal is fuel to his caprice,
his guide are his passions;
for such a one
independence is only an incoherent imagination
of his distorted ego ! 285

NATURAL INDEPENDENCE
He is unvacillating in his Ideal;
his nature is to serve and to make another prosper;
his words, behavior and activity
make the environment sincerely regardful
and humble;—
is there any doubt
that independence is his helpmate ? 286

THE GENUINE LEADER

With sympathy and service,
he gives special attention
to a person's sorrow, distress, depression and so on—
anything which takes that person on the path
of meanness or death,
and lifting him up to delight and forbearance,
he can take that person in the direction of progress,—
he is the genuine leader ! 287

THE KING
In his knowledge of the true Self (Atmajnan),
he is inspired to serve in such a way
that the life, progress and protection
of individual and collective
becomes unobstructed;
his inspiration, being of this type,
actually makes life go on with becoming and progress
for one and all,—
nature itself gives him a place at the apex
and declares him to be the king ! 288

ROYAL ATTENDANTS
And those who have been given a high place
through their service, sympathy and readiness in activity
within the society,
normally have humble regard for such a man (the king),
are attracted to him,
and support him with adoration (upward regard);
for they only can understand well
how and on which path
a human being can be rescued from anxiety
and become indomitable in progress;
so they are the attendants of the true king,
provided by nature ! 289

POLITICS
Political rule
is the rule which can take a person's existence
and becoming
in the direction of gradual development
by regulating people, individually and collectively,
in health, education and character;
and where this is decayed, complicated and besmirched,
corruption and revolt are inevitable ! 290

DANGER—A KING WITHOUT REGARD

When the king is without regard, respect and love
for those in high positions,
despite being aware of their efficiency in work,
serviceableness and the like,
it is very sure that danger is the ruler
of individual and collective ! 291

DOWNFALL OF A KING WITHOUT AN IDEAL

When the king has no Ideal,
when the environment can mould him
in its various moulds,
then he deserves to be deprived of his inheritance;
when one has no Ideal,
weakness is his associate,
and where there is weakness,
downfall or death is the attendant;
and where this has taken place,
the degradation of his hereditary line
has become manifest ! 292

THE COUNTRY
Those who have attained to high position
by service to society
are protectors of society;
when the people, inhabiting a particular place,
depend on one of these protectors
and go on following his advice,
that place can be called a country. 293

THE TRUE EMPEROR AND THE STATE

And this protector of society
is the king of that country;
and this protector's Ideal,
that is, the one whom this protector follows,
who is girdled and supported by
many such followers,
is the true emperor;
and the country or kingdom which is governed in this way
is called the state ! 294

HELL AS HOMELAND
If one has no Ideal,
and is humiliated at a command,
his homeland is hell ! 295

THE SHAPING OF AN ASSOCIATION

If someone becomes whole-heartedly sincere
in the purpose of fulfilling some Ideal,
those from his environment, who become elated
and elevated
through the impartation of his sincerity
and thoroughly follow him or move along with him
in order to assist him,
may be called fit helpers;
and one normal characteristic of their conduct
should be
that just as they remain steady in their Ideal,
likewise they are unobstructed in their movement;
and that unobstructed movement, as far as possible,
does not create conflict with anyone,
but rather draws support from others
and thus makes them elated and elevated;
and in their movement or doing
they should spontaneously be of such a nature
that adversities cannot arise
in the path on which they move,
and if they do arise, they are adjusted
and, if possible, become favorable
and further accelerate the forward motion;
and this kind of character,
spreading into the inspirer's helpers and adjutants,
forms such a normal compact body
that its go, activity, behavior and service
create a unique position,
freely bear the crown of success,
and thus can come into touch
with limitless upliftment ! 296

THE ADJUTANT COMMITTEE

They become charmed, elated, active and sympathetic
in all the affairs of those who are working
to build the association,
and moreover, even though they are engaged in personal affairs,
they are willing to help those workers in all respects
and encourage them with money, ability and advice;
however many kinds of obstructions and dangers there may be
that arise on the path of those workers' movement,
they cannot help but efficiently prevent or remedy them, as they are
auto-initiatively dedicated
to doing so;
those who are like this
form the genuinely inspired adjutant committee. 297

COMMITTEE AND WORKERS

For the purpose of fulfilling the Ideal,
if at some place a number of people come together
and want to establish some organization
or have done so,
they should actively engage
some person or persons among themselves
who is or are sincerely whole-time active,
conferring the whole responsibility
for fulfilling the Ideal's principle
upon him or them;
and those who agree in that affair
and are sincerely willing
should help him or them in all respects,
so that they may go on working freely,
and noticing all the obstructions and difficulties
which have arisen or may arise among them,
should quickly remove them,
and should make him or them well-equipped
by giving money, ability, consultation
and suggestion, and so on;
those who are ready in this way
to supply all-around help
to those who are actively engaged
may be called adjutants‹
that is, the committee;
I don't understand what else is meant by committee
other than this adjutant committee ! 298

WORKERS AND ADJUTANTS TO FOLLOW THE IDEAL

And he or they who are actively engaged in an organization
should always follow the Ideal and his principles
in all respects;
and even though their adjutants
should also be like that,
the difference is that these adjutants
are also engaged in their personal affairs ! 299

CONFUSION OR DISUNITY
If among the committee or the actively engaged persons
any confusion or disunity comes about,
then put it right,
gauging it by the yardstick of the Ideal's principle,
and if that doesn't work,
settle it in personal consultation with the Ideal;
but one should be particularly on guard
that as a result of this disunion
malice, anger, repulsion or wounded ego
do not occur at all;
and where these do arise,
it indicates that someone wants to establish his ego
in place of, or along with, the Ideal;
hence it is faulty service ! 300

AT THE IDEAL'S DEMISE

After the demise of the Ideal
in case there is this kind of confusion or disunity,
if there is anyone whose sole interest is that Ideal,
and who all along was actively engaged in him,
and still is so,
move on by consulting him,
or if such a one is not available,
by depending on the opinion of the majority
of the committee ! 301

SUCCESS IN FORMATION OF AN ORGANIZATION

As I think,
many organizations may grow up
without clashing and with little trouble
if our modes of conduct be of a normal manner and motive;
the adjutants or the adjutant committee
should pay particular attention
that those who are actively engaged
be well-managed without being restricted at all
when they are moving toward expansion;
in case of the reverse,
they should be restricted, and thus elated and elevated,
and as far as possible not weighted down
in a daze of danger ! 302
WORSHIP IN THE ORGANIZATION
And every worker and adjutant committee,
desirous of forming an organization,
should maintain particular attention
that all the materials, goods and wealth
born of their activity
become meaningful by being applied for the Ideal
to whose fulfillment they are whole-heartedly
dedicated;
and the harassment, suffering, pain, punishment
and opposition,
which must be surmounted in forming an organization,
all become like their individual and collective
assets;
and this is worship in its real form,
and this is called renunciation of the fruits of action;
and through this alone
real centralization both in matter and spirit
can come about,
because if someone becomes one's interest
nature will make one
that someone's interest,
and this‹to a certain extent‹inseparably ! 303

UTSAV (FESTIVAL)
Called to this endeavor,
people with overflowing delight
become prosperous in knowledge
and can adjust themselves for life, growth
and expansion;
such a beneficial gathering
is called an Utsav. 304

THE RULE DEPENDS ON THE SITUATION

Whatever makes humans unobstructed in progress,
and lets the lowly move on in the path of progress,
and as far as possible, without creating
tussles with others,
makes life, expansion and growth
overflowing,
that is a rule;
so a rule is no one's monopoly
there can be many variations in it
on account of place, time, situation and person;
but its goal should be the Ideal and well-being,
this is certain;
considering with sympathy and compassion,
so that by which the person concerned
becomes exuberant in progress,
and arrange things accordingly for him,
you will become the master of virtue ! 305

PRINCIPLES COMPEL NO ONE

Beneficial principles or rules
do not compel anyone to follow them;
but if one who wants well-being,
follows them,
well-being will doubtlessly delight him ! 306

THE SEERS WERE NOT FOR BRITTLE ORTHODOXY

It makes no sense at all to think
that the seers of ancient India were in favor of
blind or unjust orthodoxy;
when life and becoming, along with the Ideal and culture,
were threatened with disaster by certain activities,
and to recover them was considered hard
or impossible,
it was only activities of that sort which were taken
as cause for loss of position
in a varna,
so that they prescribed rules in that form;
the varna was not considered lost
by affairs of ordinary food and drink;
if there was no personal hindrance,
someone higher, being welcomed heartily
with oblations and with satisfaction,
used to accept food and drink
served by someone less high
with purity and good-will;
this is seen to be the principle ]of
the scripture;
moreover if shudras
in the service of a twice-born family
are maintained there for a long time
the scriptures support the acceptance of their oblations
inspired by purity and goodwill
and food and drink served with glowing cordiality,
which in the seers' principles and sayings
can be clearly seen;
so I think it cannot even be dreamed
that there existed or exists
a race perturbed with fear because of brittle orthodoxy,
or because one's position in a varna could be
easily blown away,
or one's upholding religion could be lost,
a race drenched in meanness, weak,
and ridden with so many taboos;
know for sure‹
if nothing happens that brings harm
to your Ideal, culture, life, procreation
or growth,
or that destroys and devastates
these things‹
even in times of great difficulty
for the sake of existence,
if a little deterioration takes place
then the race remains intact,
brilliant like the immovable sun;
the scriptures declare it with unwavering indications ! 307

REPENTANCE
If you have hurt anyone in any way,
taking your sympathy as your support,
putting yourself in his position,
feeling his pain with compassion,
burning with sorrow,
be repentant;
and adjust yourself in such a way
that you stay away for good from whatever may pain another
again in this same way;
you will find that divinity anoints you
with adoration ! 308

KINDNESS
The weak, distressed, shelter less, afflicted
depressed in dejection
in whose hearts
the pangs of being extinguished
are a roaring blaze,
speaking to you with a sorrowful voice,
looking toward you with lusterless eyes,
with eagerness
to live and grow and breathe in expansion,
are begging your kindness;
if your kindness does not take the hand
of such a one
and rescue him from that condition,
if it does not make him feel expansive
by caring for him,
then who is to say
whether you are alive or not?
So I say,‹
destroying his danger
out of the urge of kindness,
even at the risk of your life,
do not lag behind in caring for him,
that he might know expansiveness;
the grace of heaven
with songs of well-being
will make you blessed ! 309

FORGIVENESS
If you want to be strong-minded
then forgive‹
that is, forbear‹
and watch out to hold up the one whom you are forgiving
from the fault that has distressed him,
and do so in such a way
that he may easily be rescued,
gaining hope, encouragement,
and enthusiasm
by taking shelter with you;
and if that is not done,
then know surely
your forgiveness is merely weak,
meaningless and adulterous;
so I say,
forgive the sinner, but not the sin;
do forgive, but don't send the sinner to hell
by forgiving the fault ! 310

SPIRITEDNESS AND ANGER

Continuous heart-thrilling hungry urge
is called spiritedness,
and this spiritedness alone invites diligence
and thus makes a person radiant
in the environment
with success in activity;
and anger, by burning diligence into ashes
and inviting sorrow,
benumbs people in depression;
so do not endanger yourself
by inviting anger
under the delusion that it is spiritedness ! 311

THE FUTILITY OF SELF-CENTERED INTEREST

Where interest takes itself as its aim,
yet is indifferent and unsympathetic
to the life and becoming of the one
from whom its interest can be achieved,
or doesn't even look at him,
can there be any mistaking
that it is the prompt inviter of futility and death?
And this is so for the collective
as it is for the individual.
If you want life, if you want becoming,
if you want prosperity,
then without aiming at self-interest,
be effectively active
in the interest of others
or of the environment
without any expectation;
you will find that you are freed
from the strife of not getting
and established in all kinds of getting
surely ! 312

SHAMELESS CHEATS
There are many shameless, lying cheats
of the kind that for their narrow interest,
for self-aggrandizement,
or out of self-importance,
will speak unreasonable slander, calumny,
and obvious lies about you
in their unflinching determination to gratify themselves
with the base things that entice them;
do not cast even a glance at them;
keeping your path of movement straight,
stay alert about the environment that surrounds you,
and wait a little,‹
you will find that your shameless cheat
will fly away like ashes! 313

SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY
When you take responsibility for anything or anyone,
do not spoil it by negligence,
failing to accomplish it properly;
this is an efficient and easy means
to make life eunuch*-like;
the negligence which spoils the responsibility
by not carrying it out
will become alive in your character,
depress your whole life in vast unsuccess,
and keep your enthusiasm prostrated in
paralysis;‹
be very careful! 314

THE LACK OF GENUINE LOVE

You feel whole-heartedly
that you cannot do without him;
without him all your passions remain unsatisfied,
yet remorse for not having become like him
tauntingly tells you,
he is nothing to your genuine pull of love or desire
except a means to achieving self-interest;
search your mind through and through
and even now do what is proper ! 315

MEANINGFULNESS THROUGH FOLLOWING THE IDEAL

Whatever you are,
whatever your nature is,
however stained your movements, conduct,
and behavior,
be whole-heartedly sincere toward your Ideal
so that in no way can any form of injury
touch him,
and become indomitable in establishing him
in your world and environment;
you will find‹
whatever sin there is,
whatever rubbish there is,
it will gradually fall away;
you will become radiant,
and your glow will make everyone glow;
you will hear
the inner consciousness of everyone
saying as they look to you.

Peace ! Peace ! Peace ! 316
