I. RATIONALE
In the Philippines, like in most other modern countries, young adults in their late teens
and early 20s encounter a number of issues and challenges. Filipino young adults
begin to assume new adult roles and responsibilities: most of them may begin higher
education studies, enter the workforce, move away from home, or even start a family
after finishing high school. It has been observed that young adults are usually
preoccupied with self-growth in the context of society and their relationships with
others.
The young adult period is characterized by rapid physiological, sexual, cognitive, and
emotional changes. Studies have shown that a young adult's brain is not fully mature
until around 25 years of age. The developing brain may help explain why adolescents
sometimes make decisions that are risky and can lead to safety or health concerns,
including unique vulnerabilities to depression, substance abuse, addictive behaviors
(like social media addiction). They get involved in high-risk behaviors making
themselves vulnerable to criminal offences, accidents, physical injuries, emotional
trauma, pregnancy and medical problems — some of them extremely serious like
transmission of STDs and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
The provincial government intends to step up its efforts to empower young people. This
campaign entails comprehensive data collection and dissemination, as well as the
development of relevant and appropriate initiatives and projects, for the simple fact that
our young people are the backbone of our society, there is a growing need for more
substantial local government initiatives to address disturbing numbers that represent
their predicament.
OBJECTIVES
1. To educate and involve young people in critical thinking on themes that affect
their development as young adults;
2. To give participants the tools they'll need to face the obstacles of "growing up"
and making the move to adulthood;
3. By inviting some of the participants to participate in the symposia as resource
persons or to share testimonials of their experiences, young adults will be able
to present their ideas and opinions.
2. It will provide guidance and inspiration for participants to take on the challenges
they are currently facing or will confront in the future.
3. Participants will take part by sharing personal experiences in order to motivate
and inspire the others.
4. Incentives for the finest stories and essays on the symposium's topics.
