Course description:
To learn how to use the chemical balances and the volumetric ware.
Experiments related to the determination of density, physical and chemical changes,
empirical formula of a compound, water of hydration, limiting reactant, titration of acids
and bases, determination of acid-neutralizing power of commercial antacids, molecular

mass determination of a volatile liquid, Calorimetry and heat of reaction, and the
determination of available oxygen in a mixture of solids.

Course Objectives:
Course objectives include:
1.Introduction the students to the three types of chemical balances, their sensitivities and
teach them how to use them in weighing objects and know the different methods of
weighing.
2. Discuss with the student how to determine the density of a liquid, solution or a solid.
3. Explain the different examples for physical and chemical changes experimentally.
4. Know how to determine empirical formula of a compound from experimental data
given.
5. Analyze a hydrated salt and calculation of its water of hydration.
6. Study the limiting reactant principle and do an experiment to determine it in the lab.
7. Do a titration experiment between an acid and base and calculate the concentration of
an unknown acid.
8. Determine acid neutralizing power for a certain antacid experimentally.
9. Calculation of molecular mass of a volatile liquid.

10. Determination the heat of reaction of neutralization one.

11. Determination of percentage of available oxygen in a mixture of solids

Course outcomes:
Try to check with the students that they did understand the followings:
1.The students knew how to use the three types of chemical balances, their sensitivities
and how to use them in weighing objects in addition to understanding the two different
methods of weighing.
2.Determination of the density of a liquid, solution or a solid.
3.The students have the ability to differentiate between physical and chemical changes..
4.Determination of empirical formula of a compound from a given experimental data.
5.Calculation of water of hydration for a hydrated salt from experimental given data.
6. Study the limiting reactant principle and do an experiment to determine it in the lab.
7. Determination of an unknown acid or base concentration from titration principle.

2
8. Determination of acid neutralizing power for any antacid from experimental data.
9. Calculation of molecular mass of a volatile liquid.

10. Determination the heat of reaction of neutralization one

11. Determination of percentage of available oxygen in a mixture of solids.

Requirements:
1. Score: For the student to pass this course, he/she has to obtain a total mark of 60
2. In case of not attending:
 Lab sessions: Students will be deprived from final exam if any student exceeds
the upper limit of absence without accepted reasons determined by registration
office
 Exams: Students will not be allowed to have incomplete exams except in
emergency conditions.
3. In case of scientific cheating (e.g. in exams, research, reports) the teacher has the
right to cancel the exam for the students arrested in cheating.
