ACTIVITY 1: BUILDING SYSTEMS DESIGN

DURATION: 1 WEEK
DESCRIPTION: Building construction is examined from the standpoints of life safety (including fire
safety and zoning constraints on-site planning); architectural and building service systems
(plumbing, electrical, vertical transportation, security, fire protection); materials, sustainability, and
lifecycle analysis; accessibility; technical documentation and outline specifications; building
enclosure systems; and interior finish systems.

This activity will develop a deep knowledge of building systems, including architectural design,
building materials, and construction techniques. It will foster the skills required to adopt a building
system approach compliant to the National Building Code and its referral codes. The students'
developed knowledge of building systems will also include understanding different types and
applications of building materials and diverse construction techniques. Sustainability principles'
impact on the property lifecycle and how these will integrate and apply skills and knowledge to
industry-based case studies will also be examined. The course will include at least one site visit to an
operating building in the locality.

DESIGN YOUR HOME IN ACCORDANCE TO

NATIONAL BUILDING CODE AND ITS
REFERRAL CODES.

PROCEDURE:
1. Plot the Original Title or Transfer Certificate of Title (TCT) of your home. If you are away from
home and staying in your boarding house, you may use that structure/location for this
activity.
2. Take a picture of the current design and situation of your home. That includes everything.
Living Room, Kitchen, Bedrooms, Exterior, etc.
3. Cite all non-conformity of the existing design of your home covering all: Architectural,
Electrical, Plumbing, and Mechanical (if any).
For example, your main entrance door opening and height do not conform with the National
Building Code, take a picture that you measure it using steel tape, and cite why it does not
conform with standards. Another example is the area of your toilet and bath; measure length
and width as well as the area and check if it is compliant or not. This is the part wherein you
need to investigate everything.
4. While doing the investigation, prepare a vlog for the documentation of the process. It must
be minimum of 10-minutes video presentation of the entire investigation/checking.
5. From the result of the investigation, make a checklist (in excel format) and list all parts of
your home that is non-compliant. (refer to the example below)
6. From the results of items 2-4, and going back to item 1, re-design your home now following
the requirements and standards set forth by the National Building Code and its referral
codes. Present COMPLETE Architectural Drawings.
The following are typical components found in a full set of Architectural Construction
Drawings:
a) Site Vicinity Map
b) Perspective
c) Floor Plans
d) Roof Framing Plan
e) Elevation Drawings (all 4 sides)
f) Section Drawings
g) Working Drawings
h) Opening Schedules (Doors and Windows)
i) Stair Details

7. Use AutoCAD when drawing, and plot it using a 20x30 tracing paper template. Save in dwg
file.
8. Submit softcopy of all the requirements for this activity in the section provided in our BB-
LMS.
