Geo Test
1.Define(6mks)
I. Drainage basin- This is any area of land where precipitation
collects and drains off into a common outlet, such as into a
river, bay, or other water bodies
II. Watershed- This is an area of land that drains all the
streams and rainfall/ water droplets into an outlet like the
mouth of a river.
III. Hydrological cycle- This is a process where water passes
from vapor in the atmosphere through precipitation upon
land or water surfaces and ultimately back into the
atmosphere as a result of evaporation and transpiration
2.Explain 3 Factors affecting river regime. (6mks)
I. Rainfall- If the there is heavy rain then the river will have
more water which risks flooding.
II. Temperature- If the temperature is high then a lot of the
water in the river will become water vapour which causes
drought.
III. Vegetations – Trees will intercept and stop some of the rain
from reaching the ground.
3. Differentiate between the following terms(4mks)
i. Percolation and infiltration
Infiltration is defined as the Horizontal entry of water into the soil
or rock surface while percolation is the Horizontal flow of water
through soil and porous or fractured rock.
ii. Open System and Closed system
Open systems is transfers of water into the river regime while
closed systems is the transfers of water out of the river.
4. Identify 2 input and 2 outputs in a drainage basin. (4mks)
