Assignment #10 -

ISYS 3293_901 April 2, 2017 Joshan Cortez | 1

Chapter 10 Problems and Exercises

1. Describe an information system project that might have three subsystems. Discuss how three
iterations might be used for the project.
a. A payroll information system might have a generate reports, employee roster, and hours
and pay rate subsystems. The computation of pay rate should be done within the first
few iterations given the more complex nature of the requirements in correctly
computing the figures that go within the pay slip such as tax-rates and variable pay. The
earlier two subsystems could go within the remaining iterations because they are not as
complex. Nevertheless, all of the subsystems must be worked on each iterations so that
it does not affect or drag the project for too long, or have a negative impact in the
development of lower priority components.
2. Why might it make sense to teach analysis and design phases and activities sequentially, like a
waterfall, even though iterations are, in practice, used in nearly all development projects?
a. Teaching analysis and design sequentially like a waterfall would be a better primer for
learners because it easier to grasp the idea of completing a certain level of requirements

or completing a component of the system first before moving on to the next. Teaching

co
analysis and design sequentially, provides a better explanation how each SDLC processes

work. On the other hand, iterative approach is more desirable due to the flexibility it
provides, but could be a harder concept to understand for new learners due to the

different complex and dynamic moving pieces.

3. List some of the models that architects create to show different aspects of a house they are
designing. Explain why several models are needed.
a. The layouts of the house, floor plan, elevation, roof layout, plumbing, electrical,
o

foundation, and the overall layout design of the house are shown in a blue print. A 3D
model scale helps the parties involved to visualize how the house would look like.
aC s

Models are used to help represent the plans and provide visuals as to how different

moving pieces would fit together to create a well-built, well-designed, and sturdy house.
No single model would be enough to represent the whole, all models must come
together to form a whole.

4. Sketch and write a description of the layout of your room at home. Are both the sketch and the
ar stu

written description considered models of your room? Which is more accurate? More detailed?
Which would be easier to follow by someone unfamiliar with your room?
a. Both the sketch and written description are models of my room. Both are equally
accurate, but it would be easier to follow a graphical model of my room because just by
is

looking at the visuals anyone could already have a mental picture of the layout and what
Th

piece goes where. A textual model is just as accurate and detailed but the user would
have to use his imagination to form a mental picture of what my room would look like
given the textual description.
