Try to make sense of it.

Answer as best you can. The caption, if available, may help.

Who took this photo?

➢ No detail about the photographer of this photograph is available online. We

may, however, presume that he is a European Spanish.

Where is it from?

➢ The photograph of the Ilustrados was taken in Spain

When is it from?

➢ The portrait was taken in 1890

What was happening at the time in history this photo was taken?

➢ The photograph was taken during the late-nineteenth-century emergence of

La Solidaridad, a Propaganda Movement. The photograph depicts three of
the Ilustrados' nineteen founders. Mariano Ponce co-founded the periodical
La Solidaridad in which advocated for religious and political changes in the
region in February 1889 with Graciano Lopez-Jaena.

Why was it taken? List evidence from the photo or your knowledge about the
photographer that led you to your conclusion.

➢ There is no clear explanation or justification provided on the internet about the

photographer and why this photograph was taken. However, I believe that the
famous Ilustrados may have photographed to commemorate their
participation in the reformist La Solidaridad, a Propaganda movement.

Materials created by the National Archives and Records Administration are in the public domain.

Use it as historical evidence.

What did you find out from this photo that you might not learn anywhere else?

➢ Even though photography was new at this period, as it started to progress

during the 19th century, I discovered that photographs were used as
documentations of social lifestyle for both Spanish and Filipino members of
Philippine society. The clothes they are wearing in this photograph
exemplifies European colonialism.

What other documents, photos, or historical evidence are you going to use to
help you understand this event or topic?

➢ Readings such as Renato Constantino’s “Veneration Without Understanding”,

which was recently introduced to us by our Rizal’s Life and Works course
professor, and other potentially credible sources I can find on the internet.
