PERCENTAGE COMPOSITION OF A COMPOUND
PERCENTAGE COMPOSITION OF A COMPOUND is the mass of each element in a
compound compared to the entire mass of the compound multiplied by 100 percent
General formula for the computation of percentage composition
% mass of element = mass of element in the compound x 100 %
mass of the compound

Examples:
1. Compute for the percentage of Hydrogen and Oxygen present in water (H2O).
STEPS IN COMPUTING:
1. Compute the molar mass of the compound if not given in the problem.
A. Identify the elements present in the given compound.
HYDROGEN (H)
OXYGEN (O)

B. Identify the number of particles present in each element

HYDROGEN (2 atoms)
OXYGEN (1 atom)

C. Get the atomic weight of each element (refer to your periodic table of elements)
HYDROGEN (2 atoms), 1.01g
OXYGEN (1 atom), 16.00 g
D. Multiply the number of particles with the atomic weight of each element

HYDROGEN (2 atoms), 1.01g= 2.02g

OXYGEN (1 atom), 16.00 g= 16.00g

E. Get the sum

HYDROGEN (2 atoms), 1.01g=2.02g
OXYGEN (1 atom), 16.00 g= 16.00g
18.02g= Molar mass of H2O

2. Use the above formula to compute for the percentage composition of each
element

A. % mass of HYDROGEN = 2.02g

X 100 %= 11.21 or 11 % of HYDROGEN is present in H2O
18.02g

B. % mass of OXYGEN= 16.00g

X 100 % = 88.79 or 89 % of OXYGEN is present in H2O
18.02g

2. Glucose (C6H12O6) is a six-carbon sugar which is also known as the blood sugar. It
is an energy source that fuels our body. How many percent of carbon is present in
glucose?

molar mass of glucose (C6H12O6) = (6 C atoms x 12.01g) = 72.06g

(12 H atoms x 1.01 g)= 12.12g
(6 O atoms x 16.00 g)= 96 g
180.18g
Molar Mass of GLUCOSE (C 6H12O6)

% of CARBON = 72.06g
X 100 % = 39.99 or 40 % of CARBON is present in GLUCOSE/ C6H12O6
180.18g
