SLIMLINE MODULAR SYSTEM

2 General
The SLIMLINE CARRIER 4500 and its SLIMLINE RECTIFIER are compact 48 V power
supply systems for applications in the field of telecommunication.

This system features small size and a large permitted temperature range.

The output power of the power supply system can be extended in steps of 1.500W by con-
necting up to 3 SLIMLINE RECTIFIERS 1500 for each SLIMLINE CARRIER 4500 and
the parallel connection of several SLIMLINE CARRIERS 4500.
Here, 3 SLIMLINE CARRIERS 4500 are controlled by one SLIMLINE CONTROL.

The functionality of the system is rounded off by the optional inclusion of an MCU remote
monitoring system which makes possible remote monitoring of the power supply system
via a modem or TCP/IP adapter.

3.2 SLIMLINE RECTIFIER 1500

The 48V-SLIMLINE RECTIFIERS 1500 feed the connected DC loads and charge/boost
the connected lead accumulator batteries at the same time. The slide-in units are hot-plug
units, that means all electrical connections are made and disconnected automatically when
plugging and unplugging the SLIMLINE RECTIFIER 1500.

There are no components in the SLIMLINE RECTIFIER 1500 which need to be accessible
under normal operating conditions.

5 Assembly and commissioning

After assembly and commissioning of the power supply system, all components are unre-
servedly ready for operation. No additional settings and readjustments are necessary during
operation under all permitted operating conditions.

Attention!
The safety instructions must be observed at all times during as-
sembly, installation and commissioning!

When selecting the site, the environmental conditions specified in the section "Technical
data" must be complied with. Attention must be paid that the power supply system is not
exposed to aggressive substances and the passage of cooling air is not hampered.

All components have been set in the factory to suit the operating conditions specified by
the customer, or to default values. For normal operation it is not necessary to change the
settings.

5.1 Transport
For transport, the SLIMLINE system is provided with exactly fitting packaging.

The SLIMLINE RECTIFIERS are not transported within the SLIMLINE CARRIER. The
SLIMLINE RECTIFIERS are provided with a separate packaging.

5.2 Installation
The SLIMLINE CARRIER is provided with an overvoltage protection. The marked screw
must be removed when performing an insulation resistance measurement. After having
measured the insulation resistance, the screw must be remounted.

SLIMLINE MODULAR SYSTEM

Before plugging the individual components into the SLIMLINE CARRIER and installing
the latter in the 19" racking system cabinet, attention must be paid to the following points:

Attention!
The entire power supply system must be disconnected from the
supply voltages. Neither the mains (AC) nor the batteries (DC)
may be connected and must be disconnected if they were con-
nected.

Plug the components of the power supply system successively into the corresponding loca-
tions in the SLIMLINE CARRIER.
All electrical connections are established when the components are firmly pushed into the
SLIMLINE CARRIER. The completely equipped SLIMLINE CARRIER must be inserted
firmly into the 19" racking system cabinet and fixed with screws.

Attention!
The frontplate must be bolted on after equipping the SLIMLINE
CARRIER 4500 with the SLIMLINE RECTIFIER 1500 and the
SLIMLINE CONTROL.

Attention!
The power-supply circuits (mains input cable, battery leads) must
be provided with a disconnecting device. The disconnecting de-
vices must be readily accessible in the vicinity of the racking sys-
tem.

If an external battery is connected, then the instructions concern-

ing the installation and maintenance given by the manufacturer of
the battery must be observed.

As protection against electric shock and lightning, etc., a potential equalisation line must
be connected, if the SLIMLINE CARRIER is not firmly fixed in a reliably earthed cabinet.
This connection must be made on the rear of the SLIMLINE CARRIER
at the earth stud (M6).

For grounding the plus terminal of the supply busbar the ground stud has to be connected
with the + terminal.

The mains terminals are located on the mains filter at the rear of the SLIMLINE CAR-
RIER. The mains input cable must be fuse protected in the user supply system.

Battery and loads are connected via the copper bars on the back of the SLIMLINE CAR-
RIER.

10.12.098 J.Bu/Obs 20/27 4345 en

SLIMLINE MODULAR SYSTEM

Attention!
Observe correct polarity! The battery connections must be short
circuit proof!

Provide adequate conductor cross section area to avoid excessive voltage drop on the bat-
tery input line!

The terminals for the alarm, measuring and signal lines have a maximum capacity
of 1.5 mm²/AWG16.

Attention!
The potential-free contacts have a current carrying capacity
of 0.5 A / 60 V DC.
Only a special type of temperature sensor may be fitted
(2kΩ/25C° KTY81-210). This temperature sensor is available rea-
dy for use with various line lengths.

5.3 Commissioning
Attention!
Commissioning may be carried out only by properly instructed
qualified personnel!

Attention!
Before connecting the AC and DC supplies, check the following
points:
• Have all components of the power supply system been ad-
justed, mounted and connected according to the specifica-
tions?
• Is the mains voltage within the tolerance range?
(voltage, frequency) See the Section "Technical data"
• Is the connected battery a 48 V lead accumulator battery?

Commissioning itself is carried out by:

1) Connecting the mains

2) Connecting the battery

After a few seconds, the system start-up is complete and the LED "SLIMLINE CARRIER
1500 ready for operation/operating" lights up.

SLIMLINE MODULAR SYSTEM

6 Maintenance / repair
All the components of the power supply system have been developed for continuous opera-
tion and are according the maintenance clues to treat. To ensure correct functioning, it is
recommended that the flow of cooling air is checked periodically and dust is removed from
the units if necessary.

Attention!
If servicing is carried out, the components may be exchanged only
by instructed and qualified personnel!

The SLIMLINE CARRIERS 1500 may be removed and inserted during operation (hot-
plug). However, this must be done steadily to avoid unnecessary contact burning.
If there is only one SLIMLINE CARRIER 1500 in the power supply system and if no bat-
tery is connected, the SLIMLINE CARRIER 1500 may only be pulled after the load has
been switched off.

SLIMLINE MODULAR SYSTEM

8 Description of function
The power supply system feeds the connected DC loads and at the same time, if present,
the 48 V lead accumulator battery circuits. Up to 3 SLIMLINE RECTIFIERS 1500 for
each SLIMLINE CARRIER 4500 and max. 3 SLIMLINE CARRIER 4500 are connected
in parallel within a system.

The connected AC voltage is applied via a mains filter to the SLIMLINE RECTIFIER
1500 inputs. The mains filter is provided chiefly for suppressing interference voltages pro-
duced inside the power supply system, which would otherwise be transmitted out into the
connected mains system. Various control loops in the SLIMLINE RECTIFIER 1500 keep
the output voltage constant and ensure that the current drain from the mains is sinusoidal.

The SLIMLINE CONTROL controls the SLIMLINE RECTIFIER and the optionally con-
nected distribution. The SLIMLINE CONTROL organises the data traffic between the
SLIMLINE RECTIFIER and the optionally insertable MCU. The potential-free error mes-
sages "Urgent Fault" and "Non-urgent fault" are issued by the SLIMLINE CONTROL
with a time delay.

The operating state "Ready for operation" or "Fault" of the SLIMLINE RECTIFIERS 1500
is signalled by two LEDs on the front panel.

If the minimum load is not at least 5% of the rated load, a fault is indicated.

In the absence of external intervention the system is normally in the "float charging" opera-
tion mode.
The value of the float charge voltage is adjusted according to the actual temperature
(-4 mV/°C/cell) when a battery temperature sensor is connected.

Assembly instructions SLIMLINE

2 General
The power supply system consists of one or several parallel-connected
SLIMLINE CARRIERS (1 U, 19 inches).

One CARRIER can house up to 3 parallel-connected SLIMLINE

RECTIFIERS. To connect the battery and the load, there are pre-fabricated dis-
tributors provided, e.g.

 SLIMLINE DISTRIBUTION 4500 (1 U, 19 inches),

 SLIMLINE DISTRIBUTION 13500 (3 U, 19 inches) or

 discretely assembled distributors.

If SLIMLINE CARRIER and SLIMLINE DISTRIBUTION are ordered as a u-

nit, the components are delivered as assembled and wired unit. The battery and
the loads must be connected to the corresponding terminals by the customer. If
necessary, the +connection of the "supply bar" must be connected to the earth
as a functional earthing (telephone earth FPE).

Due to the high output power and the resulting power loss of the system, some
requirements and preconditions apply to the installation and ventilation.

3 Installation requirements
The installation of the power supply unit or of the power supply system in a 19
/ 23 inch cabinet must be done according to the following instructions:

No apertures or foreign bodies must be present in the exhaust air duct

that could cause the air to escape uncontrolled or to obstruct the air flow
in the aspired and outgoing air. Furthermore, take care that the air intake
area is closed at the front to prevent that warmed-up intake air from the
cabinet is used for device cooling.

The following figures / drawings show the critical air paths of a cabinet
as an example. Clearances in space, like the exhaust air duct above the
cabinet, are taken into account. If the free air flow is impeded in the cabi-
net top area due to head frames or the like, the air duct must be placed el-
sewhere.

Assembly instructions SLIMLINE

Explanations on the figures 1 and 2:

A= power supply 1; 2 or 3 x 1 U, e.g. SLIMLINE CARRIER 4500

Power loss with 1 fully equipped carrier (3 rectifiers) = 500 W

Power loss with 2 fully equipped carrier (6 rectifiers) = 1000 W

Power loss with 3 fully equipped carrier (9 rectifiers) = 1500 W

B= Distribution, e.g. 1 U SLIMLINE DISTRIBUTION 4500 or

3 U SLIMLINE DISTRIBUTION 13500

(1) = Bulkhead towards the lower housing space

(2) = Deflector (45° angle) to guide the exhaust air into the exhaust air duct1

(3) = Bulkhead towards the top installation space (as exhaust air duct, close
it up to the upper cover!2)

(4) = Deflector plate (45° angle) for the air guidance

1
Example for (2),

Leg length of the deflector angle and the straight duct depend on the ca-
binet depth (T).

In case of more than 3 carriers, adapt the cabinet depth.

The profile dimensions at different cabinet depths must ensure an opti-

mum exhaust air guidance.
2
Example for (3),

Bulkhead over the carrier covers all apertures.

The cut-out of the bulkhead must be dimensioned according to the 1 U or

the 3 U distributor (DISTRIBUTION).

A perforation in the rear wall or the side walls of the cabinet is not ad-
missible.

F= Clearance (distance between cabinet and room ceiling)

T= Cabinet depth

E= Dimension for closed front.

Space below and above the carrier without apertures in the front area
(shunt air flow is prohibited); also filters, door, detachable covers etc.
are not allowed!

Measure E = 30 mm for 1 carrier

Measure E = 45 mm for 2 carriers
Measure E = 72 mm for 3 carriers

Example: Cabinet depth 400 mm

 max. 3 carriers

 measure F = 750 mm,

only grid meshes or diamond meshes are allowed on top in the exhaust
air duct, free aperture surface approx. 95%!

4 Connection and commissioning

Install the unit / system in a dry and dust-protected environment.

The flow of cooling air must not be obstructed.

On account of its heavy weight, the racking unit must be provided with
crossrails or runners on the right and left.

The unit / system as delivered is ready for operation.

Before connecting up, make sure that the specifications on the rating pla-
te and data sheet agree with the actual mains and battery voltages.

The circuit diagram should be observed at all times!

Make the mains connection only when the mains supply voltage is swit-
ched off!

According to the VDE regulations an accessible mains disconnecting de-

vice must be installed in the vicinity of the unit / system.

Install equipotential bondings with sufficient conductor cross-section

(e.g. 16 mm²) (wiring pin in the terminal area) to protect the device/the
unit against interference voltage (e.g. due to lightning strokes).

If necessary, connect the +terminal of the "supply bar" with earth (tele-
phone earth FPE).

Description - Battery

1 General
The documentation of the battery is attached to the battery. Please read this de-
scription, paying special attention.

2 Safety prescriptions with regard to use batteries

Batteries should be charged, maintained and changed only by personnel who
have been trained for this. These instructions and the prescriptions of the bat-
tery manufacturers have to be observed! Near to batteries it is prohibited to
smoke and use open fire. No inflammable materials or sparking equipment (e.g.
machine tool) may be in a distance of min. 2 m of the battery which is charged.
Working with tools with high surface temperature (e.g. soldering iron, hot-air
blower etc.) is prohibited.

During battery charging explosive gasses are generated. The

ventilation during the charging process and min. one hour after
end of the charging process has to be warranted.

The room must be ventilated. Before each charging process the function of a
present ventilating system has to be verified. Fire prophylactics have to be avai-
lable.

Parts which can be sucked via the ventilators may not be depos-
ited near the charger. Obstructed ventilation slots result in over-
heating and inflammability.

Do not use water to cool overheated chargers, but let them cool
down in switched-off state.
