READ THE TEXT & OPEN THE BRACKETS
People sometimes think of Britain and Australia as monolingual, countries with only one operational
language: English. It is the language of business, of government, of education, of shopping, of society. But a
moment's reflection ________(show) that sizeable sections of the people of Australia ___________(carry
out) part or most, in a few cases all, of their day-to-day transactions in other languages: Greek, Italian, Serbo-
Croat, or Pijinjanjara, one of the many aboriginal tongues. And in Britain we have Welsh and Gaelic as well
as the mother tongues of immigrants — as we______ (call) them — especially Urdu, Hindi and Bengali.
604 million people, many more have some knowledge of English now than 30 years ago; but while
the numbers________ (rise) the quality and range of command ______(drop), and the opportunities for using
English _________(shrink) in general. In Malaysia, English progressively _____________(phase out) as the
medium of education in the secondary schools. In Fiji, the Department of Education___________(alarm) at
the decline in communicative efficiency in English, which forms the only link between speakers of Mbau, the
Fijian lingua franca, and the other half of the population, of Indian descent. And in South Africa, amongst the
whites, native speakers of Afrikaans appear steadily ____________(become) less proficient at English.
By and large, however, English is on the increase, and in a variety of contexts and purposes. In
countries where English is spoken as the principal mother tongue, there is a slight to moderate increase in the
number of English users. As an alternative all-purpose vehicle of communication, English
_________(spread) gradually in countries such as Singapore, or amongst elites in certain African countries. A
very marked rise is evident in the use of English for occupational purposes: English is the international
language of the air, and failure to use it efficiently can endanger passenger safety. English is the language in-
creasingly of banking and industry; many international firms __________(base) in non-English countries
___________(conduct) their entire operation throughout the world in English and put promotion bans on staff
without the requisite degree of proficiency in it. In commerce, a Japanese salesman sent to Peru
__________(negotiate) the contract in English. Articles on computer technology ______________(write) in
English by Frenchmen for Frenchmen to read. Swedish nuclear physicists __________(talk) professionally to
each other quite naturally in English.
There is no point in asking ourselves whether some other language might not be easier to learn: the
world ________(opt) for English, and the world _________ (know) what it wants, what will satisfy its
needs. We can ask however what features of English are likeliest to cause difficulty to learners, especially
outside continental Europe. The sound system is often found hard to master: groups of consonants clustered
together as in strength; or the 20 vowels of British English — the BBC kind on news broadcasts — far more
than in most other tongues. The vocabulary of English is enormous; the Full Oxford Dictionary

4
____________(occupy) several feet of shelf space comprising some half a million words. An educated mother
tongue speaker of English _______(understand) perhaps 15 to 25,000 of them; but even that
figure_________ (daunt) the foreign learner. True, the grammar uses only a modest range of word endings,
but the verb system is highly complex, with formations such as he mightn't have been told; and getting the
prepositions right at times baffles even the Dutch.
And outside the education systems, more and more people__________ (attend) English classes, for instance
at British Council centres in Southern Europe, the Middle East and South East Asia, or at schools of English
as a Foreign Language in Britain. English is a commodity people _____________(seek) eagerly to acquire,
often at great expense, for broadly sociocultural purposes: to obtain information, to converse in multinational
gatherings, to travel. Nowadays, at an airport or in a hotel bar, a Korean __________(address) a Kuwaiti
directly in English without asking him if he ___________(speak) the language; some degree of command is
taken for granted. And beyond the field of education, the needs of banking, industry, trade and
telecommunication often effectively establish the lingua franca for multilingual countries, for example English
in Singapore.
What lessons can we draw from history? Precious few, it seems to me. Greek
_______________(be) the language of culture of the ancient world, and towards the end of the classical
period __________(develop) a demotic or common form, in a pretty rough variant of which much of the New
Testament is written. But it __________(drop out) of general use with the end of the Roman Empire. Latin
itself fragmented into the Romance languages; Portuguese is not understood in France, nor Italian in Romania.
French ____________(flourish) in Europe for some two hundred years, but__________ (lose ground) to
nationalism in the nineteenth century, ________(pass) into the twentieth as the language of diplomacy.
English, with its wider geographical base, its 300 million native speakers, its utility as a tool of learning and
its importance in science, technology and commerce, is now incontestably the international language of the
world. Whether it will be so a hundred years from now depends on political, economic and cultural factors
more than on the characteristics of the language itself: but one thing looks certain — English will not
fragment as Latin did. The media ___________(see to) that.

Task 2

The Mysterious Moon

Were scientists right about what the moon would be like? Many were, of course, but many were
mistaken. One said there was no lava on the moon. Another said that moon material would explode as
soon as an astronaut’s boot touched it. One said there would certainly be water on the moon. Many felt
there was a chance that the astronauts could bring back to earth some strange infection. These ideas are
now known to be incorrect, and no doubt we are still wrong about many other things, too.
Is the moon like the earth? Yes and no. It is more like it than many scientists thought before Apollo.

Like the earth, the moon is in layers, with a crust on the outside and a deep mantle below. It may also
have a core, as the earth does. However, the crust is almost four times thicker than the earth’s crust. We
do not know much yet about the moon’s mantle, that section of superheated rock, which goes down
hundreds of miles below the crust. We think – but we are not sure – that the moon has a central core,
which includes molten rock, as the earth does. In other ways, of course, the moon is very different.

57
There is no known life. The makeup of its atmosphere is very different; earth creatures cannot breathe
in it. What is the moon made of? Definitely not green cheese. It has the same chemical elements as the
earth and the rest of the solar system have, but in very different amounts – more of some, less of others.
Carbon, which is a very important part of life on earth, is rare on the moon. Is the moon cold or hot?
Most scientists agree that some of the moon was hot for at least a time. Rocks from the moon show that
they were once melted. Right now there seems to be heat someplace inside the moon, possibly a great
deal of it. On the surface, however, there is no sign of heat – no volcano, for example. The surface
itself ranges from a heat of 230F to a cold of minus 290F, depending upon where the sun is.

Where did the moon come from? We don’t know. The three main theories are that the moon was born
from the earth, the earth and the moon were born together at the same time from the same cloud of gas
and dust, and the moon was born someplace else in the solar system and then was captured by the
earth’s gravity. So far, none of these theories has been proved to be either right or wrong. Professor
George W. Wetherill of the University of California in Los Angeles says that he would give the first
two theories each a ten percent chance and the third one a twenty percent chance. The other 60 percent
he would give to “things we haven’t thought of yet.” In spite of all we have learned from space
flights, the moon is still a riddle from the distant past – and will be for a long time to come.

Task 2
History of New York

New York, America’s largest city, is the national leader in business, finance, manufacturing, the
service industries, fashion and the arts. Its recorded history begins with an Italian navigator, Giovanni
da Verrazano, who around 1524 sailed into the present New York Harbour. In 1609 Captain Henry
Hudson explored the harbour and the river, later named after him. In 1624 Dutch colonists arrived and
created a permanent settlement, named New Amsterdam. The following year the Dutch West Indian
Company bought the whole island of Manhattan from Indians for a few trinkets. Dutch was the official
language of New Amsterdam, but before its population reached 500 it was reported that 18 different
languages were spoken there. In 1663 the colony was captured by the British fleet under the Duke of
York and renamed New York, but the Dutch and those who came with them stayed. So, from the very
first years of its existence, New York was truly an international city.

New York was active in the colonial opposition to Britain and several battles were fought in the area.
In 1778 the British seized the city and controlled it for the rest of the war. When in November 1783 the
Americans returned, they found New York in a very poor state. Out of its 4,000 buildings, about 1,000
had been burned and the rest were hardly inhabitable. An energetic programme of general
reconstruction was launched. Within the next four years the population doubled and in 1800 reached
60,000; by 1815 the value of imports arriving in New York harbour was double of that of Boston and
three times that of Philadelphia, the major colonial ports before the Revolutionary War. The
construction of the Erie Canal, the bridge canal between Buffalo, on Lake Erie, and Albany, on the
Hudson, was completed in 1825. It cut travel time by one-third, shipping costs by nine-tenths, opened
the Great Lakes area and made New York City the chief Atlantic port of the USA. The opening of the
Erie Canal accelerated even more the expansion of the city, already the nation’s largest.
After the Civil War of 1861–1865, industrial development quickened and brought a massive wave of
immigration from all over the world. During the 19th century the city expanded northwest from the tip
of Manhattan and by 1884 included the whole island as well as the territory of the present Bronx. In
1898 New York assumed its present boundaries, annexing Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.

"The Computer Revolution"
The first computers appeared right after World War II, and since that time they have changed not
only the lives of Americans. They have been changing the lives of people all over the world.
At present wherever the man turns, he finds a computer working. Computers in banks can transfer
money from one account to another. Computers are used to launch, guide and track spacecrafts and
satellites; they help predict weather and earthquakes. They help people make long distance and local
telephone calls. Computers are also used when one reserves space on an airplane. In medical laboratories,
computers have reduced the errors in testing, and they have saved doctors' countless hours of work.
Many stores use computers to keep track of sales and orders. Also, many stores use optical scanners to
record purchases and total prices. A tiny computer chip controls your washing machine. Computers
linked to TV, telephone and satellite networks spread information throughout the world.
Without special training it is impossible to understand exactly how a computer does its work.
Nevertheless, many people use computers in their daily lives. Computers are everywhere. They are so
much a part of our lives that we usually don't even know they are there.
Computers have become the foundation of the modern working world. Today, virtually all types of jobs
use them to some degree and all the countries are affected by the "computer revolution".
In the future computers will be a million times faster than they are today. They will become easier
to use, but anyone who has not learnt how to use the new technology will be seriously disadvantaged,
particularly in the field of employment.

Adopt or Die?
As history shows, monarchies need to continuously reform themselves, if they want to survive.
Arguments about the Monarchy are as old as the institution itself. But this summer, critics who have been
calling for reform were taken by surprise.
According to the Political Editor of the Sun newspaper, Trevor Kavanagh, it is the Queen who has
recognized the need for change. "She set up the committee four years ago," he said. "They meet every six
months, and she, at the age of 70, looks into the future and understands that the Royal Family has to
change taking into account the changing times".
Buckingham Palace has not revealed all the details about the committee's discussions, but it is clear
that the Queen is considering changing some of the Monarchy's more ancient rules.
One proposal is to end the law, which foresees that the title of Monarch passes to sons rather than
daughters. The present Queen only inherited the title because there were no male heirs.
The ban on heirs to the throne marring Roman Catholics has also come under scrutiny. Under the
present law, which is 295 years old, a Royal cannot be crowned if he or she is married to a Catholic.
But big changes are not expected soon. It is clear that these meetings are part of an evolutionary, not
revolutionary process of change and reform. The British Monarchy has, throughout history, been very
good at adapting to circumstances. It has survived wars, political and social changes, and ups and downs
in its popularity.
