INTRODUCTION

Most signs are self-explanatory, but if you

encounter a sign where the meaning is not
clear, seek advice before you commence work
in the area covered by the sign.

WHAT IS SIGN

An inscribed board, plaque or other delineated

? space on which a combination of legend and
symbolic shape is used to convey message

WHY DO WE NEED SAFETY SIGNAGE

Safety signs draw your attention to objects and situations

affecting your health and safety

WHERE ARE SAFETY SIGNAGE PLACED

 Before safety signage is placed, the

responsible person shall risk
assessment to ensure that the type
of sign used is suitable for intended
purpose

them unless you have been so authorized

How ever, controlling the hazards risk like elimination

substitution, engineering, need to be done

Safety sign do not replace the need for proper accident

prevention measures

FUNCTION OF SAFETY SIGN

1. To indicate prohibition or mandatory requirements, to

warn, or to inform
2. Accident prevention (Safety sign draws attention to objects
and situation affecting health and safety)

Sign advising of hazards. They are subdivided as :

B1. DANGER Sign:

Sign warning of particular hazard or hazardous condition that is

likely to be life-threatening
signs in this category are of a special design which
incorporates the word DANGER in white letters on a red
symbolic oval shape

If a symbolic sign is required in conjunction with a DANGER

sign, it shall be separate sign place beside or below the

placards are specific to the type of dangerous goods to which
they relate.
Classification hazard substances

Class 1. Explosive

All material or substances including certain mixture

substances that can generate explosion effect by
heat, friction, pressure

Contoh : Ammonium nitrate, Ammonium per

chlorate, ammonium picrate, detonator for
ammunition, diazodinitrophenol, dinitropenol,
dynamite, gun powder, picric acid, etc.
Class 2. Gasses

2.1 Flammable gas (acetylene, LPG, Hydrogen,

CO, thylene, ethyl fluoride, ethyl methyl ether,
butane, neopentane, propane, methane,
methyl chlorodiline )

2.2 Non Flammable gas (oxygen, nitrogen, helium,

argon, neon, nitrous oxide, sulphuride
hexafolride)

Poison gas (chlorine, methyl bromide, nitric oxide,

ammonium-anhydrous, arsine, boron trichloride
carbonyl sulfite, cyanogens, etc)

Class 3. Flammable Liquids

It’s liquid that can start burn when contact with

the sources
. Liquid flash point less than 61 o C

Smoke or fumes produced in this class can result

unconscious or death.

Example
: petrol, acetone, benzene, butanol, chlorobenzene, 2-
chloropropene ethanol, carbon disuliphide, di-iso-
propylane
Class 4.

Class 4.1 Flammable Solids

Solid material that can start burn when have

contact with external sources such as
sprinkle/fragment or fire
. This substances will start burn when have a
friction
Example : sulpur, pospor, picric acid, magnesium, alumunium
powder, calcium resinate, celluloid, dinitrophenol,
hexamine.
Class 4.2 Spontaneously Combustible Substances

Generally solid material in this class has big

ability to have spontaneously combustible
. Some of the types most likely to be burn by
itself when the atmosphere humidity or contact
with wetness.

It’ s also produce poisoning gasses when get burn/fire

Example
: carbon, charcoal-non-activated, carbon black,
alumunium alkyls, phosphorus

Class 4.3 Dangerous when wet

Flammable gas produced by contact between

solid or liquid material with water
This substance also develop poisoning gas when
contact with water, acid or humidity

Example : calcium carbide, potassium phosphide, potassium,

maneb, magnesium hydride, calcium manganese
silicon, boron trifluoride dimethyl etherate,
barium, aluminium hydride.

Class 5.

Class 5.1 Oxidizing agent

This substance can generate fire when contact

with flammable material also can produce an
explosion.

Contoh : calcium hypochlorite, sodium peroxide, ammonium

dichromate, ammonium perchlorate, chromium
nitrate, copper chlorate, ferric nitrate, potassium
bromate, tetranitromethane, zinc permanganate

Class 5.2 Organic Peroxides

Can assist in fire occur to flammable material.

If have heat or fire exposure in long time can
generate an explosion.
Have more danger effect if get reaction with
other material
.

Decomposition of this substances can produce flammable gas

and poison

Contoh : benzol peroxides, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide,

dicetyl perdicarbonate, peracetic acid.

death to human when swallowed, inhale or skin
contact

Example : cyanohydrin, calcium cyanide, carbon tetrachloride,

dinitrobenzenes, epichlorohydrin mercuric nitrate,
etc.

Class 6.1b. Harmful (Toxic) Substances

The harmful substance that can caused serious

effect to human when swallowed, inhaled or skin
contact

Example : acrylamide, 2-amino-5-diethylamino pentane,

amonium fluorosilicate, chloroanisidines, etc
