T. O. No. 01-20E-l
10. Instruments

~. Vacuum Sys tem. - Two vacuum pumps located on engines ,

2 and 3 operate the gyro 1nstruments and the gyro p110t. The
f'a11ure of' e1 ther pump w111 cause the suction to drop slightly
but will in no w~y h1nder the normal operation of the system. '
E· Automatic P11ot.- A high pressure oil pUlllp on engine
No. 2 operates the gyro pilot servo, and its proper operation 1s
indica ted when the oil pressure gage below the pilot nn1 t shows
125 Ibs. per sq. in. A by-paBB valve (at the left of the pilot)
1s nOl~ally open but may be cloBed in the event of a serious
leakage in the system. Speed control valves (below the gyro pilot)
are used to obtain the des1red BenBitivity of control. To place
the gyro pilot in operat10n the turn, climb, and bank knobB are
rotated to align the follow-up pointers, and with the Bpeed control
.valves 1n the half open ios1tion, the engaging lever (at left of the
p11ot) is tul'ned to the ON" pod tion. The automatic tul'll control
(below the gyro uni t) iB uBed when a continuous turn iB deBired.
The proper amount of bank must be set on the bank knob to prevent
skidding. Also see T. O. No. 05-45-1 for complete operation.
c. • - The engine instruments are conventional
except the tor and the Cambridge mixture ind1ca~or.
Their use is explained under Engine Operation. Cylinder head
- temperatures are indicated by the thermocouple indicator on the
center panel. The f'011 r position switch enables the operator to
select the desired engine and determine the head temperature of' one
cylinder on that engine.
d. Tanding gear, tall Wheel, and
f'lap-posl on the center panel. The pilot
dlrector, marker, and radio compass indlcators are located
a t the left; or the gyro pllot. Three rheostats on the center
sub-panel the Intensity of the Instrument lllumination. A
compass, tel', and clock are located overhead on the small
panel • An all' brake supply pressure gage is
located lef't of' the pilot IS panel. Tbe bomber's

the air to various leading edge units. This valve 1s controlled by
an electric switch to the left or the pilot. To place the system
in operation, first throw the switch to start the rotary valve, then
turn on the wing de-icer valve. When shutting down the system, the
rotary valve should be left running for a minute or so after shutting

WARNING: A LARGE AMOUNT OF STATIC ELECTRICITY MAY BE
RETAINED IN THE DE-ICER BOOTS AFTER A FLIGHT.
IT IS 'lHEREFORE IMPERATIVE THAT THE STATIC
ELECTRIClrf BE DISCRARGED UPON GROUNDING THE
AIRPLMIE BY PASSING A GROUND WIRE LOOP OVER
THE SURFACE OF AU. BOOTS, ESPECIALLY PRIOR TO
REFUELING OPERATIONS.
~. Propeller Anti-Icers.- (1) Propeller anti-icers consist
or a 20 gallon supply tank, located under the radio compartment
floor; two electric pumps (inboard and outboard propeller supply);
a four-point switch, located at the left of the pilot; lines lead-
ing from the pumps to the slInger rings on each propeller, thence
onto the blades; and rubber covered spinners to protect the hubs
from ice (oreations . The fluid uSAd in the supply tank shall be
in accordance with T. O. *G3-:;~:.-1. Filling the tank is
accompll~hed from the rad10 compartment through a filler neck
which ex~ends above the floor.
(2) The use or a large runnel or a non-drip can i s
recommended to prevent so111ng the carpet . A measuring rod 1s
provided in sp,'ing clips on the righ t side wall of the radio
compartment . The rubber covered spinners should be saturated
berore each rlight with the special oil provided ror this purpose .
The pump rheostats ha ve been set to deliver approximately 2 quarts
or rluid per engine pe r hour . If it is found that this output
1s irsurficient to p r oduce satisractory results, the rluid flow ,
can be increased as required . Adjustment of the pump speed is
cade at the rheostat located in the extension of the motor housing.

The CODstant speed propellers used are actuated
4S w rklng by governl~rs whic~ c mtrol the all pressure required to hold the

and will accurately maintain engine speed. Stops are provided at

take-off R.P.M_. but may be ove~r1dden if additional pOWer 1s
desired. After tak~-orf thft eng1nes can be synchronlzed by reduc1nf
the speed of the two inboard engines to the desired R_P.M., and
synchronizing by ear. The two outboard engines may then be brought
down until their indicatt:::d speed Coincides with the adjusted pair.
It will be found that once adjustdd the propellers will maintain
their speed and synchronism indefinitely. It must be remembered
that with this system of propeller control. the only indication of
a change in throttle setting 1s the variation in manifold pressure.
