Material Selection

Cement and Sand

Cement to be used must be fresh, free from lumps and stored in a dry place. The sand should not
contain soil or other materials and should have less than 3% impurities. Generally, coarse and granular
sand are best for concreting while fine sand has to be used for plastering work.

Gravel

Gravel to be used for the biodigester should be cleaned, hard and of angular shape, and have average
sizes. The thickness of the gravel should be 25% of the thickness of the concrete product where it is
used. It should be 25% or less than the thickness of the concrete product where it is used.

Water

Water that is used for making cement mortar and cleaning construction materials have and adverse
effect on the integrity of the structure.

Paint

A custom type of paint is used in bio digester construction produced from a mixture of raw cement and
water to enhance the anaerobic quality of the digester.

Mild Steel Bars and Galvanized Metal Plate

Mild steel bars and galvanized metal sheets are used for preparation of form work and reinforcement of
the digester wall.

Main Gas Pipe, Gas Valve, Pipes and Fittings

The joint reduction elbow with the pipe should be perfect and gas tight to avoid gas leakage. Gas pipe
should be properly galvanized to prevent rusting and this pipe should be at least 600mm long. The
connection of the pipes between the gas filter to the gas burner and gas lamp should be gas leakage
free. Pipes/holes and fittings are made from high quality neoprene rubber.
Accessories

Digester

An excavated cylindrical pit wherein anaerobic digestion of feedstock composing of cow dung and water
takes place.

Dome/Gas Holder

The space at the topmost portion of the digester that allow the formation of biogas and is made of light
quality iron. The gas that would be stored in the gas holder is connected to the gas pipe that is about
600mm long and is galvanized.

Inspection Tank

Also referred to as compensation tank or displacement tank. It is used to compensate the digester after
retention time has lapsed and provided as a manhole to conduct inspections and maintenance.

Rubber Hoses

A transparent, non – pressurized pipe connected to the gas holder that used to convey biogas to the gas
lamp and gas burner.

Gas Cleaner/Filter

A unit that cleans and filtered unwanted gases or materials such as water vapor, hydrogen sulfide,
hydrogen and sulfur from the biogas. It is located in between the gas holder and application points.

Gas Burner

One of the two appliances that is being supplied by the digester. A double gas burner used for cooking.

Gas Lamp

One of the two appliances being supplied by the digester. A unit made up of control valve, switch,
filament, and glass shade.
