Week 5 Weekly Summary 2

Ideas, Reading & Discussions that Stood Out

This entire week was very informative and exciting. There were a lot of things that I read

or discussed with my classmates that stood out to me. The two most imperative topics was

Patient Privacy Issues and The HIPAA Law. These two topics and discussions were very

interesting and caught all of my attention. Some of the patient privacy issues that my classmates

discussed had me at a wow and I was like oh gosh these things could have been prevented fairly

easy. Then it took me to think about the HIPAA law and discuss it with my classmates and

inform one of them on the different parts of this law. It helped myself and my classmates see

how both Patient Privacy Issues tied into the HIPAA law.

Greatest Effect on Me

In this week’s learning I think the HIPPA Law and ways to prevent the violation of the

patient privacy had the greatest effect on me. I state this because at some point reading up on all

this and discussing issues with my classmates I realized a lot of things. For example if you have

a husband who brings his dying wife into a hospital for care and he isn’t on any of her paperwork

as a emergency contact or person to have her information released to there’s little information

that he can receive on her while there. I feel as if that was wrong at first until I kept reading on

the HIPAA law and understood the importance of respecting a patient rights and confidentiality.

What Was I Surprised About?

Unfortunately, in this week’s reading, discussions, and learning there wasn’t anything I

was surprised about. I had prior knowledge on all these things discussed so it just enlightened my

knowledge and I learned a little extra. So there wasn’t anything surprising but I did take a lot of

new information from this week.

Daily Life Usage

I don’t think I can say this enough but I can use everything I’ve been learning and using

in this course daily when I open up my own healthcare facility. This week learning about patient

privacy issues taught me a lot of things and ways to avoid these problems when I open up my

own healthcare facility and while working in the healthcare industry period. All the information

about the HIPAA laws is also something that I can use in my own practice and while in this

industry. It is very imperative to know all parts of the HIPAA law because one mistake that may

violate this law can cause one big trouble.
