Unit 1

n the past, the world could be a dangerous place.

2 ź
Armies might invade and bandits were always
ź
roaming about . How could people protect themselves?
3
One solution was to build a wall surrounding one’
s
5 town or city.

One of the best examples of a walled city is

Carcassonne in southern France. At one time, it was
4
just a small, sleepy town on a hilltop, but then around
100 BCE, the Romans came and began building
ź
10 IRUWL¿FDWLRQV . Over the next 2,000 years, control of the
5
region changed hands several times, with each new
ruler adding more walls and towers.

As centuries passed, Carcassonne grew into a city

ź
and became part of France. The French reinforced
15 the wall since it was close to the border with Spain,
which was sometimes an enemy. Carcassonne ended
up with a 3-kilometer-long double wall with 53 towers.
During the 1600s, the region became less important
ź ź 6
strategically and the fortress fell into ruin . In fact,
7
20 the French government wanted to tear down the castle
ź
in 1849, but the decision caused an uproar among the
public. Instead, the entire structure was restored and
8
preserved for future generations.

Today, the wall is no longer needed for defense, and

25 Carcassonne has become a popular tourist destination.
ź
s main job now is to please armies of tourists
The wall’
instead of stopping armies of soldiers!

A: What are you watching on your smartphone?
B: Oh, one of my classmates runs a Twitch channel. I recently started watching him.
A: Do you all talk in real life?
手機掃一掃 m just a lurker on his stream. I don’

A: Hey, who was that lady you were eating lunch with?
B: Do you mean Heather? That’ s my girlfriend.
A: No way! She’ s gorgeous, and she’ s dressed like she’
s rich, too.
B: Hahaha, both of those things are true.
She also has a degree in physics, teaches yoga, is a classical
pianist, and has a great sense of humor.
A: Gosh! The total package, huh?
How did a dweeb like you end up with a girl like her?
B: What can I say? I’ m just a really nice guy.
