EARTH SCIENCE – INDEX FOSSILS

QUARTER 2 WEEK 7 SLK 8

PRE-ASSESSMENT

ACTIVITY 1 FOSSILS
1. Index fossils are commonly found, widely distributed fossils that are
limited in time span. They help in dating other fossils found in the same
sedimentary layer. For example, if you find a fossil from an unknown era near a
fossil from a known time, you can assume that the two species were from
about the same time. Any old remains of a plant or animal that lived in the
midst of the particular geological period that can be utilized to date the
containing rocks.
2. The geologic time scale is an important tool used to portray the history of
the Earth—a standard timeline used to describe the age of rocks and fossils,
and the events that formed them. They can help us to determine the geologic
age and environment in which they were deposited.
3. The fossil forms that happen within the rocks, however, provide the chief
means of establishing a geologic time scale, with the timing of the development
and disappearance of widespread species from the fossil record being used to
portray the beginnings and endings of ages, epochs, periods, and other
intervals. Some examples of events listed on the geologic time scale include the
first appearance of plant life on Earth, the first appearance of animals on Earth,
the formation of Earth's mountains, and the extinction of the dinosaurs.

ACTIVITY 2 CLASSIFYING FOSSILS

1. Trilobite 6. Coral
2. Ammonites 7. Graptolites 3. Brachiopod
Fossil 8. Bryozoan
4. Trilobite 9. Graptolites
5. Graptolites
WHAT HAPPENED?
1. Yes, I can say that it is comparable, It is portrayed as a geologic time scale in
which each time scale in each event with their claim colors. It talks to the
event that happened on that day.
2. By realizing that our life has likenesses within the geologic time scale.

WHAT NOW?
I realize that time really flies too fast. I have many realizations while I create my
own timeline like I had too many memories to remember. Remembering my past
was really fun and embarrassing at the same time. I realized that as I grow older,
I ended up more developed and I changed. I`ve realized when creating my
timeline, the time scale were comparative a bit like recognizing the geologic time
scale. Be that as it may, these time scales were comparable to us people and
creatures. Showing that as people we develop old inside the past of times rather
like animals. Taking off the check in each other lives.

LET’S EVALUATE

Ammonites

Ammonite is a fossil shell of a large extinct group of mollusks related to

the living chambered Nautilus. They are among a suite collected by the
National Museum staff in April 1948 at Tignoan creek, Mansalay, a town in
Mindoro Island. They are included as one of the oldest rock-dated fossils in the
Philippine archipelago. It ranges according to the result obtain from both field
and laboratory work to Middle Jurassic age, 160-175 million years old.

The first evidence of Mesozoic Era in the Philippines was the discovery of
Ammonites in 1940 by Hollister of the National Development Company
Petroleum Survey from exposures south of Mansalay bay near Colasi Pt. in
southeastern Mindoro. The ammonite-bearing formation is designated as the
Mansalay Formation, name after a district of Mansalay where it was first
encountered.

Ammonite is the most important and interesting fossil not only because it
is an index fossils recognized in the Philippines but it could be use to elucidate
past geographic relationship between the Philippines and other area. Whether
the Philippines was part of the mainland Asia or not, one thing is obvious, that
part of the archipelago was certainly under the sea (Pacific Ocean) at the time
of formation.

WHAT ARE YOUR LEARNINGS?

I learned a lot like fossils and geological time scale. By studying the fossil,
we are able to tell how long life has existed on Earth, and how diverse plants
and animals are related to each other. Often ready to work out how and where
they lived, and utilize this information to discover out around old situations.

WHAT FACILITATED YOUR LEARNINGS?

Since I am very interested about index fossils. I was eager to know more
so, I search more and watch videos more about this topic.

WHAT HINDERED YOUR LEARNINGS?

Social media and stress hindered my learnings.

HOW ARE YOU GOING TO APPLY YOUR LEARNING IN YOUR DAILY LIFE?
I am going apply my learning by teaching those people who doesn’t know
about this lesson or to those people who are still confused. Also, I am going to
apply my learnings to students who also had an interest in this kind of topic.

ANY CLARIFICATIONS ON THE TOPIC?

Since, I enjoy and interested on this lesson, I had no any clarifications.
