This article appeared in a local newspaper:

Does a life of crime appeal to you? The Hong Kong Police Force might be just the thing
Even though the Hong Kong Police Force no longer enjoys the levels of popularity it once did among the Hong
Kong public, there is no shortage of people wanting to join the Force. When the Police held its Recruitment
Day on 7 April, a record-breaking 2,048 applications were received. And no wonder: the starting salary of a
Police Constable/Inspector is HK$23,070/HK$40,825, and for those who are considering a lifetime career in
the Force, the potential for advancement is excellent.
The role of a police officer naturally varies depending on the title and position, but according to the Hong Kong
Police Force website, the overall objective of the Force is ‘to maintain Hong Kong as one of the safest and most
stable societies in the world’. Police Constables try to achieve this by invariably being ‘the first at the scene of
major crimes, emergencies, heated disputes and many other unexpected situations’ whereas Inspectors serve in a
more supervisory capacity.
The Police Force is looking to recruit over 1,800 officers in the 2018/19 financial year.

Anyone who has integrity and honesty and the ability to think clearly under pressure is invited to apply for one of
these positions, at any time during the year. Applications can be submitted online or by email, or in person.

Prospective recruits need to undergo initial screening, which includes eyesight and fitness tests as well as height
and weight measurements. Those who are appointed as constables, then do 27 weeks of so-called ‘foundation
training’ in areas such as law, first aid and handling weapons. Inspectors do a further nine weeks of training,
focusing on leadership and human resources management.

Your careers adviser has asked the class to give presentations on different careers and jobs in Hong
Kong. Your group has been asked to give a presentation on being a police officer. You are meeting
to discuss the topic. You may want to talk about:
 what skills and qualities are needed to be a good police officer
 the advantages and disadvantages of working as a police officer
 activities that you could organize to help students learn about the job
 anything else you think is important

PART B Individual Response

The examiner will ask you one or more questions based on Part A. You will have up to 1 minute to respond.
