Part B

For questions 2 – 9, choose ONE question and write about 400 words in the space provided on pages 8 – 14. Indicate
which question you are going to attempt using the question number box on page 8.

2. Learning English through Sports Communication

As a sports representative of Hong Kong, you have just returned from an international competition overseas. You
are now invited by the principal of your old school to give a talk about your experience in the competition, the
hardship which Hong Kong sportsmen face, and how students can support the development of the local sports
industry. Write your speech.

3. Learning English through Workplace Communication

More companies are adopting informal procedures in their job interviews: candidates are interviewed under casual
settings rather than the traditional way of asking and answering questions in an office room. You have recently
experienced an informal job interview while looking for a summer job.

Share your experience on your blog and express whether you think informal interviews are better than formal
interviews.

4. Learning English through Social Issues

You are an assistant to your local District Councillor, who has recently received the following letter. You are
asked to write a reply, offering suitable advice and explaining measures which the District Council would take.
The reply letter will be read and signed by the Councillor.

Dear District Councillor,

I am the manager of a 24-hour restaurant in your district.
Recently, more and more teenage night drifters and homeless people
have been staying overnight in my restaurant. It is not that I do not
pity them, but their presence is causing trouble to my staff and
customers. What can I do? Is there anything you can do to help me?
Chris Wong

5. Learning English through Debating

The Debating Club of your school is accepting submissions of essays on the following topic: “When learning
English, learning from a local teacher who can teach English as a second language (ESL) is better than learning
from a native-speaking English teacher (NET)”. Write your essay.

6. Learning English through Popular Culture

Many people say that Hong Kong is a city with poor artistic culture. Some have suggested that the Hong Kong
government should promote such a culture by displaying the works of local and foreign artists in public areas (e.g.
streets, shopping malls, public transport stations).

Write an article for your school magazine to express whether you think the suggestion is effective.

7. Learning English through Drama

ou are a financial expert and your job is to help people solve their financial problems. You have recently been
contacted by a primary school principal, who hopes to produce one or more episodes on his campus TV channel to
teach his students how to manage their money. The principal is hoping you could give your professional advice
on the content of the episode(s).

Write your reply email. Mention what financial management skills and/or concepts that you think primary
students should master, and how to teach them in an interesting way in the episode(s).

8. Learning English through Poems and Songs

You are a famous poet and you have received an invitation letter from Hong Kong Secondary School Speech
Association, which hopes that you can be one of the judges in its upcoming poetry festival. However, you cannot
attend because of your busy schedule.

Write a reply to the Association to turn down the invitation. As some of your works are included on its syllabus
for the festival, you should also mention how you expect participants to interpret your works during their
performance.

9. Learning English through Short Stories

You are entering a short story writing competition organised by the local library. Participants are to write a
complete story based on the following setting:

Yesterday was Christmas Eve and many children hung a Christmas stocking next to their bed, hoping that they
would receive a present. When they woke up this morning and looked inside the stocking, they found the
following note.

Santa Clause’s workers refuse to work.

Present delivery is cancelled this year.
