(A) Equation of Motion
1. A car moves 20 km with a speed of 50 km/hr and another 30 km with a speed of 40 km/hr.
Find the average speed.
2. A car covers 30 km at a uniform speed of 40 km/hr. What should be its speed for the next 90 km so
that the average speed for the entire journey is 70 km/hr.
3. A boy runs for 15 minutes at a uniform speed of 10 km/hr. At what speed should he run for the next
45 minutes so that average speed comes to 12 km/hr.
4. A ball starting from rest rolls down an inclined plane with an acceleration of 8m/s2. Calculate the
distance it would travel in 6 seconds.
5. A sprinter running with a velocity of 9 m/s stops in 5s. Find his acceleration and the distance
traveled while stopping.
6. The velocity of a train increases from 36 km/hr to 54 km/hr in 10s. Calculate acceleration of train in
m/s2.
7. If brakes applied to a car moving initially at 6 m/s produced a negative acceleration of 60 cm/s2 ,
what distance will the car travel further if it takes 10 seconds to stop.
8. A bullet striking against a block of wood with a velocity of 360 m/s pierces a hole in it 12 cm deep.
Calculate the deceleration of the bullet.
9. A particle moving with a uniform acceleration attains a velocity of 40 m/s after starting from rest in
a certain time. What is its average velocity during the period.
10. A body is moving with a velocity of 25 m/s. A uniform negative acceleration acts on it so that the body
travels 57 m in the next 5s. Find the magnitude of the negative acceleration.
11. A car travelling at a speed of 15 m/s is stopped by applying brakes within 30 s. If the deceleration
be uniform, calculate the distance travelled by the car after applying brakes before it comes to a
stop.
12. A bullet is fired vertically with a velocity of 49 m/s. Calculate :
(i) maximum height it would reach.
(ii) time required to reach the maximum height.
13. To estimate the value of 'g' a stone was released from the top of a building 31.25 m in height. The
stone reached the ground in 2.5 s. Find the value of 'g'.
14. A particle having initial velocity of 20 m/s moves with a constant acceleration 2 m/s2 for 15s. Find
displacement of the particle in (i) 10 seconds (ii) 10th second.
15. A body moving with a constant acceleration travels the distance 3m and 8m respectively in 1s and
2s. Calculate : (i) initial velocity (ii) acceleration of the body

1. Draw velocity-time graph when a body is moving with variable velocity & uniform retardation.

1. Fig. given along side shows a velocity time graph for two cars P& Q starting from the same point in
the same direction Calculate (i) acceleration of car P, (ii) acceleration of car Q between 2s
5s. (iii) At what time both cars have the same velocity. (iv) Which car is ahead after 10s and by how
much?
2. A man is standing at the top of a 60m high tower. He throws a ball vertically upwards with a
velocity of 20m/s at what time will the ball pass him going downwards. How long after its release
the ball touches the ground.

3. The driver of a car travelling at 52km/h applies the brakes and decelerates uniformly. The car stops
in 5s. Another driver going at 34km/hr applies his brakes slower & stops after 10s. On the same graph,
plot the speed versus time graph for the two cars. Which of the two cars travelled further after the
brakes were applied?
4. A man fires a gun and hears its echo after 5s. The man moves 320m in towards the hill & fires his gun
again.
This time he hears the echo after 3s. Calculate the speed of sound.
5. A body starts with initial velocity 4m/s & accelerates at 1.5 m/s2 for 6s. It travels with this speed for
another 8s and then comes to rest with uniform retardation in another 10s. Draw a velocity time
graph to show the motion of the body from your graph. Find out -
(i) Distance travelled during acceleration, (ii) Average velocity of the body,
(iii) Value of retardation.

7. A body falls freely from certain height. Show graphically the relation between the distance fallen &
the square of the time. How will you determine the value of 'g' from the graph?

9. A bullet initially moving with a velocity of 20m/s strikes a target and Comes to rest after
penetrating a distance of 10cms in the target. Calculate the retardation caused by the target.

13. A ball is dropped from the jumping board of a swimming pool which is at a height of 20 m. A second
ball is thrown from the same board after 1 s with initial velocity u. Both the balls hit the water
together. What was the initial velocity with which the second ball is thrown? Do they hit the; water
with same velocity? Explain.
14. A rocket is launched to travel vertically upwards with a constant velocity 20m/s. After travelling
for 35s the rocket develops a snag & its fuel supply is cut off. The rocket then travels like a free body.
What is the total height achieved by it? After what time of its launch will it come back to earth?

17. Two Trains 'A' & 'B' are approaching towards each other from opposite directions. Speed of train 'A' is
60 km/hr and that of 'B' is 40 km/hr. When the two trains are at a distance of 200 km a bird sitting on
the engine of train A takes off for train B with a speed of 82 km/hr. As soon as it reaches 'B' its starts
again for A. It continues to so till the two trains collide? Find the distance covered by the bird?
